ERR Message on D90.....

I would still recommend it, but I have not had any issues with mine. I use Sandisk Extreme III SDHC cards, and an assortment of Nikon, Sigma and Tokina lenses. When I get the first error, I will certainly post it. I think there is definately a problem of some sort, but I doubt it is related only to lens contacts and SD cards, and I think once more bodies go back for service, they will discover the problem.

Do you seriously think that there are more people than not with problems with the D90? how many of them do you think they sold? do you think that the only D90 owners are the ones that are posting on this thread? come on, get real.

Let me rephrase that.... I don't think I was clear. :(

I was told there are more people who own the D90 that have NOT had problems. (I also learned this has happened to other models) But, there seems to be a very high number...too many actually; that are having problems with D90 that NIkon will have to address. So far I have had no problems but I will try and not be surrprised if I should.

Sorry for the offense.

I think I must be the one who apologizes, after re-reading your post several times I think I have misunderstood what you were trying to say. It was very confusing. Hopefully there are less cameras with this problem! lol...sorry again. no hard feelings?

None taken, Not a problem, no worries! :)
After I re-read my own post I got confused too! :)

I just hope the problem gets resolved...I love the D90 and my trusty D40! :)

Ive had my D90 for a couple of months now and have experienced a problem where ERR would appear and the aperture value would hit F90 or F99 (cant quite remember), removing the battery fixed it.

I am using Sandisk Extreme III 2GB and 4GB cards, but I also use these cards in my little Canon IXUS 85 without issues.

I was using the kit lense 18-105mm VR when the error did occur but have since been using a Tonika 12-24mm and have not experienced it so far.

I am a little worried as I will be taking this camera to Japan for 6 weeks and I dont want to be missing out on some great shots but Im finding it hard to replicate the problem.

Did you try resetting the camera by holding down the two buttons on top of the camera with the green dots by them? The Nikon rep I talked to suggested this as a means of fixing the problem. I'd imagine Nikon did this the first time you sent your camera in, but maybe not. Sounds like you may have a bigger issue, but it may be worth a shot.

Good luck and thanks for sharing your experience. I think the more we learn about this the better off we are, and maybe Nikon will finally have a press release/firmware update.

Sandisk 2GB and 4GB Extreme III cards. Lexar 133X 2GB card.
The one presently in my camera is the 4GB card and my 'no memory card
error' happened with that one this time.

I didn't reset my camera at the time the errors were appearing, but for other reasons I did reset my D90 on separate occasions. And I have had incidents of the same errors since it was returned from repair.

Thanks Cope, I never thought about sending the card to Sandisk, but I
will give that a shot. I previously used a 1GB Sandisk in my D50 and
never had a problem so I'm guessing it's just a bad card. I'll let
y'all know how that turns out.

Thank you,

JB
Did you get your card back from Sandisk?

The first time I got an "err" message, I remembered it happened when I was taking the camera out from my bag and accidentally press the shutter. Lens cover was still on and I could here the shutter release sound. The camera went into a lockdown mode with err and cha message shown on the panel.

Tonight, I did the same thing (i.e. accidentally pressed and released the shutter while the cap is on). Guess what? I was actually able to take a picture ... and the EXIF file shows that I have a lens spec of 195mm - 7200 mm and the focal length that the picture was taken with is 7200 mm!!!

Here is the picture if you care ...

Anyone experienced that before??

This thread is stopping me form buying D90 and it's seems like Nikon just ignoring us. I did a search on google about this problem and there is pages after pages with ERR CHA and D90. Is anyone from dpreview staff maybe can contact Nikon and address this issue!!! ( just tell them to Google it). or maybe get a hold of Nikon representative at PMA 2009?? I'm going on vacation for 3 weeks and I it's seems like I can't rely on this camera, maybe it's just me.

Well, I experienced a shutter problem!

After having r07 message for a long time (on an exhausted battery) I got the F-- message. Bummer. I have seen F-- before so I just reseated the lens. Then bummer again. It showed me "Err" message and no fiddling helped (turn on, off, battery on, off, card on, off, lens on, off) - nothing. Then I noticed the viewfinder is black. I then took the lens off and looked at the mirror and it was stuck in the middle of down normal position and the upper normal position - it was positioned in the middle. I pressed the mirror gently down - it was not moving, then gently pressed upward - it reached its upper position with ease. Release the mirror - it went to its middle abnormal position. In my wondering what was going on I pressed the shutter-release button et voila - the mirror went down where it sould be. After that everything was absolutely ok.

So let me recap - r07, F--, Err ... it's almost a grand slam :)

I bought 2 8gb Sandisk Extreme III cards, when I purchased my D90. After reading these threads on this error, I became paranoid and bought a few 1 & 2 gig Lexar and Dane Elect cards. So far, not a problem with any of my cards. I do love the Extreme III cards, so very fast.

The question I have is when this error shows up and you power off, or otherwise reset the camera, do you lose all the images on the card, some of them, of none? If you have lost images, have you been able to revocer them with a recovery tool?

Years ago, I accidently deleted about 300 images from a Sony card. I bought memory card recovery software online and recovered every image.

The two times the CHA error has happened to me, I got all of my pics off the card OK.

Even if the card does seem to be OK after extracting it from the camera, I think it would not be wise to put the card back into the camera and try to put more pics on it. Downloading it and reformatting it first seems like the better part of wisdom.

Sorry to say I've never returned the card to Sandisk. I see it sitting there every now and then, but haven't taken the time to do it. I'm going to try and do it this weekend. I'll let you know when I receive a new one.
Did you get your card back from Sandisk?

I definitely wouldn't let this thread stop you from buying the D90. When I started the post I wanted to find out what others have done when encountering this situation and if it was/is serious. Since switching cards I've not had a single issue with the camera.

I LOVE my D90, it is an awesome camera. I've switched lenses many times, going from the 18-200VR to the 18-105VR to the 70-300 and a Tamron 28-75. Never any errors since switching from the Sandisk card which I believe was faulty. It's been at least two months since switching cards and there hasn't been so much as a hiccup from the camera in nearly 1,000 shutter clicks. Please don't believe this is an inferior camera, I truly believe it is the memory cards.

Yes it is frustrating that Nikon hasn't come out with an official press release, but if you buy from a reputable dealer they will likely work with you should you ever encounter any issues.

Good luck.

Maybe if I were trying to revive an old geezer body, but really can't see going through all that with a brand new $900 body.

Great camera.

Given the volume of complaints and no sign of resolution from the mfg, I personally would hold on to my money until there's some sign it is being fixed.

Sort of sorry I gave the D70 to my brother.
