G1HD to replace G1?

Just had a look at that PhotoAcute, it looks VERY interesting.
Now, imagine all of that going in the camera... phenomenal
possibilities for future 4/3rds cams with Panasonic sensors and
co-processors.
Does really do all that it claims?!! Especially in terms of noise
reduction, resolution, and fringing?
Yes, provided you have a profile for your camera + lens combination.
And finally does it FULLY support G1 raw files as I didn't see any
mention of G1 compatibility on the site?
It does already, but will do better when someone does the profiling
for the G1 + lenses - I've already done a few profiles for them...
time for someone else to have a go - incidentally, you can get a free
license in exchange for doing a profile (search their site)
So these profiles you have done, are they uploaded on their site for all users to use, in the same way that folks upload profiles on the Neat Image site?

And is that where profiles generally come from for PhotoAcute, from user submissions?

Regards,

I am an aeromodeller and a hobby photographer. I take stills of model aircraft both for my own interest and for publication [my last dslr paid for itself in publication receipts]. For stills I need a dslr because this is the only way I can get flying shots which are acceptable. But I also like to take short video clips of launches, flights and landings, and piece them together into little 4 or 5 minute videos to be viewed on friends computers. For this I use a Canon p&s with a 6x zoom. The data transfers quickly from card to computer in a format I can use without conversion. I have tried a real Mini DV camera, but transferring data from tape in real time, and then having to convert it into a form I can work with, was a pain. I took the thing back for a refund. So the upshot is that I carry 2 cameras, a Canon 30D with a 70-300mm zoom, and a Canon A710is for the movie clips.

I tell you this because I am a bit fed up with the assumption that it is only soccer mums, who know nothing of photography, who would use video on a still camera. I would certainly use video on a still camera if it produced quality stills, and I cannot wait to get my hands on a G1 with video when it appears. Then I would only carry one camera to the flying field, and it would be a lot less bulky that the DSLR alone, not counting the A710 as well.

And for those who advise buying a Nikon D90, just try tracking a fast flying model aircraft looking at the rear screen with the camera at arms length. I think you would realise quickly that an eye level finder is needed! And as for the rolling shutter, what a bummer.

Just putting another view forward. Video on a still camera can have its uses other than for soccer mums.

The following paragraph taken from this release info on the ZS3

"The imaging power of LUMIX has further evolved with the Venus Engine HD, which boasts two CPUs to provide approx. 2.4x processing capability and support for AVCHD Lite and HDMI output. It integrates all the advanced functions and camera operations with high performance and low-power consumption. In image processing, luminance noise and chromatic noise are reduced separately before and after signal processing. This is further refined by separating noise two-dimensionally into high-frequency and low-frequency noise. The circuits then effectively reduce only the low-frequency noise to minimize the unwanted noise and help produce beautiful, sharp still and motion images. "

Does anyone know whether the Venus Engine operates on data before it is stored as a RAW image?

Brian and Diane, I'm one of those folks with quite an array of legecy MF lens. I have six FD mount lens (Canon and Vivitar Series 1) and the list of competent repair technicians who can keep my Canon A-1 and F-1 in working condition is getting smaller as these are 35 year old cameras. So the Panasonic G1 and the FD adapter has piqued my interest mightily.

I'm not willing to part with my old lenses as most are (by today's standards) fast f/2.8 lens. My favorite is the Vivitar Series 1 35-85 f/2.8 lens. Yes, its a heavy lens with a 72mm filter mount, but you can't beat that constant f/2.8 aperture over the zoom range. There's no comparable new DSLR lens, although the high-end Olympus four-thirds lens come close albeit at a very, very high price. See http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/lens/dea/products/lens/index.asp

With the G1 camera's 2x factor, I lose the entire wideangle range, but I'll be able to use my legacy lens. At least I have the telephoto spectrum covered. So I'll "grudgingly" welcome the addition of the Panasonic 14-45mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens and maybe add the 7-14mm to satisfy the wideangle spectrum. I just wish they are f/2.8-3.5.

Hal
I suspect there are quite a few folks here who don't own Olympus
4/3rds lenses. Unlikely I will buy an adaptor for those though more
likely I will buy an adaptor for other lenses. Still--I think
Panasonic will be making a mistake not to offer the body without any
lens in the future. For now--if you buy a G1, its not reasonable to
not need/want the 14-45.
I suspect there are many, many photographers who don't want to risk
building up a collection of DSLR lenses, but perhaps have a film
camera with MF lenses... they will see the G1 as the first very
compact digital option which offers highly accurate manual focusing
with their legacy lenses.

I know that the G1 has got some rangefinder owners seriously
interested... these people will have zero interest in the kit lens -
and the 4/3rds adapter is an attractive alternative for these.

I can't see it being long before the chinese develop m4/3rds adapters
to anything you can imagine.

Kind Regards

I am a long distance hiker and think that perhaps the G1 with the 7-14mm
lens would be perfect to tak on my hikes. I need wide angle and anti
shake and light weight. I know that the 7-14mm isn't available yet but also
haven't seen the G1 being sold without a lens - just the body. Anyone
have any ideas on how Panasonic will sell the G1 once they have a few lenses??
Seems like right now everywhere I see it it has the 14 -42mm. There is a
40-150mm right?? I don't see much about it when I go checking on prices.
Any input welcomed. I am a NIKON person but feel that the G1 is better
suited than offerings by Nikon in this size range at the moment.

Acccording to Panasonic, the video version of the G series requires special lenses. It's unlikely to be less than the G1 at launch,

My guess (emphsize GUESS) is that it will be a while before the camera is available body-only -- not until the market is pretty well saturated for the kit lens and people begin buying second bodies. Even then, the kit lens will likely be a bargain as body-only pricing on lower price SLRs tends to be relatively high.

There is a 45-200, but so far it doesn't seem widely available in the US. Last time I looked the only source I found was Amazon.

Panasonic released a lens roadmap along with the G1 introduction that showed a 7-14 mm wideangle zoom slated for release in 2009. The lens does NOT have anti-shake (OIS) however. As far as I know there has been no more information released about this, although I think there was a mockup of the lens shown at one point -- it was significantly smaller than the Olympus 4/3 lens of the same focal length range.

There is no 14-150 lens either current or on the roadmap for the Micro Four Thirds format. Leica makes a 14-150 lens for regular Four Thirds that can be used on the G1 with an adapter; however, this is a quite expensive and hard-to-find lens. However, Panasonic has a 14-140 HD lens on their roadmap as well, presumably to accompany their upcoming HD version of the G1.

You say Olympus has a 7-14mm 4/3 lens. does that work on the G1?? If it does what are its limitations?? No auto focus?? Is it expensive?? Hard to find?? Thanks for your help.

I don't really know much about it, to be honest. Apparently it goes for about $1500 US and seems to be readily available. I don't know how it works with the G1 other than, like any 4/3 lens, it would work via the adapter.

Sorry for yet another G1HD query, but is it anticipated that the
G1HD will come in at a similar pricepoint to that which the G1 did,
or do people think that the G1HD will be significantly more with the
AF HD stereo video capability, particularly IF bundled with the
14-140...?

NO, the Raw data is left as is - look at LX3 ISO400 RAWs at 24mm in a 3rd party converter like RAW Therapee and you'll see them very noisy and almost Fisheyed - no Venus engine input there, the G1 from the ISO800 shots I took look unmolested also
