FastStone Users?

Is FastStone destructive (when you apply say contrast) or does it keep an original around (like Picsassa)?

Thanks, Z

Did you check all EXIF data including the manufacturer specific ones? It may be ok for Canon, Nikon,... but it wasn't for Pany when I checked it.
I've never, ever seen any version of ACDSee that didn't save every bit of EXIF information present in an original image, upon saving it after performing some edits. Granted, it might not =display= every single bit of EXIF information for every camera, if that's what's really bothering you. Otherwise, I'm just not sure what you're talking about....

This is from Sept 2007:
-------

Also ACDsee Pro 2 seems to have a problem with Pany makernote alignment. I'm evaluating ACDsee currently. I shure will switch to it, as soon as this problem is solved (f.ex. 'Internal Serial Number' is destroyed by ACDsee).
-------
It wasn't solved - it was simply rejected to be solved.
I don't care about it anymore.

No destruction. There are two ways to avoid overwriting original files. Save As with a rename or save to a different folder which you choose. In editing, everything is quickly reversible with the undue button. I cannot believe how fast everything works and the viewing is much better than Picasa. The compare function is a gem. You can compare up to four images at the same time all of which can be scrolled or zoomed, either together or one done individually. The free tutorial is worth a download. I printed it up and put it in a book with document protectors. Handy to have while I learn!

Teri there is a free download tutorial (manual) on the FastStone site. It is worth either a read or print out. I printed it, and assembled it into a book. While most things are intuitive the tutorial will introduce you to some stuff that is not real obvious. Like a frames button, re-sizer, text, caption, marking etc... Check it out. :-)

Now that you are on a first name basis with the Faststone boys and now know the program, do you agree with my suggestions that I have sent Faststone and posted several days ago? If you do please email Faststone. The more of us making a request the more likely they will develop it. To refresh your memory here is what I posted and sent to Faststone several times with no reply from them:

The program can be improved for us photographers who compare our images and weed out all but the best. Please consider the following improvements.

1: My 3 cameras have blinking highlights to show blown highlight areas (over exposed areas). Why not have that option in this program? I know of no viewer program that has this feature. It might be a first. The "compare" feature has some options at the top (show EXIF, show histogram, etc. Just add a check box to "Show Highlights". Also in the main view let the "Show Highlights" (blinking highlights) be an on or off option.

2: The EXIF data that is displayed as you move the mouse to the right is far from complete. Why not have a page one and a page 2 of all the EXIF data, or a scroll bar so all of it can be seen.

3: When I alter an image with an external editor, and then save the image, it goes to the bottom of the thumbs. It would be nice to be able to have it integrated into the thumbs. Xnview does that.

For me, my first suggestion is a huge want. The others are not that important.

Jim, I got their email address from within Faststone by clicking Help, About. They show an email address for support. Maybe you have a different email address for their top "executives".

Betarover - I do not know for a fact but suspect the "FastStone boys" is just Andrew who has responded to one of my suggestions and concerns. My suggestion concerned a Capture program feature and it was implemented later in an update. Most recently I informed him of a problem I had with new security program I had installed disabling Capture. Not a FastStone problem I knew, but hoped he might comeback with a work around. He didn't and I later found the work around in the security software.

Your request to add "zebra pattern" I believe it's called in video viewfinders for over exposed picture areas may sound simple to you to do, but in actuality may be very difficult or impossible to make it a useful feature in the viewer. I do not see much value in it myself, but I think it's good you've suggested it.

As for EXIF data I would also like to see a few more fields ... but NOT complete. Adobe Bridge let's me see "complete" and there are way more items that can be shown which would be of no use for me or any average user. What are the other data fields you would like to see? Maybe suggesting just those be added would produce a better response.

As for how your edited and re-saved image appears in the directory listing at the end ... if you refresh and resort by filename it ought to be put back where you want it. When it appears at the end I suspect it's being sorted by date with most recent date showing last.

Whoever is behind the scenes at FastStone please treat them with thoughtful respect as they have already done a heck of a lot of free work for you!

right, I second that.

I simply would like to append the last three digits of the orig. filename of the photo to the new filename. Then I could have more than one shot per second (or minute) and could easily find the same photo with the old name (in a backup f.ex.). Also having more than one cam, which use the same number region by accident, would not be a problem as they can be destinguished by date/time taken.

Those are some good ideas Betarover and I'll be happy to endorse them ,However, I have no special relationship with anybody. As a matter of fact I'm trying to work out a problem with them about the RW2 files for LX3. I am and continue to be very impressed with the way these folks do business. I am using the same email address as you. The one in their sight. They have responded to me overnight and are very courteous and helpful. Good luck with your campaign for improvement! :-)
