Well after using my image bank just a few times in the safety and security of my office area i apparently broke it.I sat it on a file rack next to my desk which stood no higher than my desk (2 1/2 feet ) so i wouldnt have to step over the cord but immediatly caught the cord with my foot and it fell the short distance into a bunch of soft garbage.Looks like it landed on the CF card and memory stick because the little tray i slide the CF card into looks detached from the circuit board on one side and the cf card seems to slide in deeper on one side than the other. The poer wont turn onIm sure even fine china would have withstood the little tumble it took.Unfortunatly since i have no power i cant tell if my files are ok in the hardrive. My 90 day warranty expired 4 months ago and i guess this wouldnt be covered.
Any tips or advice would be apreciated...seems like i should get power at least.

I just ordered another Image Bank with power Bank but im not going to be willing to erase my hardrive to formate it.
Disapointed

PS ,the top panel of my ms to CF card adapter popped apart a few days ago when i was slidding in a memory stick.I know you must think i must be some rough unco-ordinated 300lb turkey ...not so ...this stuff is fragile, very fragile.

Im sitting here with 5 ms sticks i want to see wondering if my hardrive is erased and how much its going to cost to repair or replace this junk

Dan,

Sorry to hear that. What kind of hard drive is in the tank? If it is IBM TravelStar 15GN 30GN or 40GN, it should have good shock resistence, in which case, it is unlikely the hard drive is broken. If the hard drive is okay, you should not worry about the files. After you get your new tank, you just need to insert the hard drive, no need to reformat or partition.

Also I thnk Image Tanks should have one year warranty. Why did you say 90 days? Well in this case, it is your fault, it won't be covered anyways.

If you cannot wait until your new IB shows up you should be able to stop by a computer shop and pick up a Laptop HD adapter. This is just an adapter so you can hook up a laptop drive in your PC. You should then be able to access the drive and retreive the data. If it survived or not is another question. Generally speaking though these drives are very durable...

As for what to do with the broken IB... I would suggest trying to find a friend that has some electronics skills. There is a good change the CF connector could be soldered back onto the PCB and get it up and running again. Been awhile since I had my IB open, so I don't recall if this connector is Surfance mount, or Pins... If it is surface mount it might be a bit tougher (but not impossible) to fix..

I will pay the shipping if you want to send it to me ;-)

Erwin,

Good point.. I did forget about this option.. This is the main reason why I advocate IB owner to always create a partition. In the event of disasters you may have more options open if the drive was partitioned...

Posted to quickly... and if it works: how to partition? One extended partition covering the whole drive, and devide it in a couple of logical partitions? Or also a primary partition?

Hi Danton,

If you bought Image Tank from me I would replace it, with no question asked, but you might try Image Tank people themselves, they are extremely nice and serious business operator and I am sure they will assist you. Is your Image Tank or Bank. Let em know what exactly product you have and if I can assist you.

I don't believe logical partition will work at all with the IB.. Only Primary partitions will be recognized. If you are going to create more then 1 Primary partition and it will be used with Xp/2k it will have to be created under WinXp/2k..

I intially partitioned my drive under Win98 with 2 primaries. Under winXP only the first partition would be usable. The second could not be read or deleted. I ended up putting the HD in my computer (with an adapter) and deleting all partitions. Put it back into the IB and connected to a XP machine. Then created 2 primaries. I have not tried creating more then 2.. Infact I ended up deleting the second partition and going back to a single as I find it easier..

Quite cheap.. Should be $10 - $15 US I would guess... Maybe cheaper.

Your right!

Just made it back.I finally posted something that got peoples attention around here!

Well some good news amongst the bad.I was able to view my memory sticks and even title, organize and delete some yesterday by learning how to view and download them directly from my 707.(Finally got some masterpiece shots i tried to take on 3 occasions...3rd payed off)

Then today i find my new Image tank in the mail.I tried out the power cable to my Image Bank and no it didnt work. But fortunatly after a lotta hassles i got the hardrives recognized by the Image tank just as you claimed.Nothing was missing.I added my new stick files to both hardrives for backup.(I now have an Image Bank and image tank. The Tank came with a CD for a manual and drive installation...which may have been preferable to just getting the manual with the Image bank because when i originally got my image bank i wound up having to take the IB and my PC to a computer guy and he got me to switch my windows 98 to ME and pay for getting the drivers recognized...i couldnt do it.So im relieved its doing something for itself for a change. But fortunatly it was the Image bank written manual information that enabled me to get my hardrives rolling in both my image bank and image tank without outside help because the info in the Image tank CD was insufficient. No removable disc drive icon was showing up under "my computers"at all but i found it following steps given in the written image bank manual but not in IT CD.

Anyway,i notice "insidecomputer.com" didnt send any copy of my warranty with my new image tank and i cant find it on the box or in the cd literature so ill have to track that down.I also notice there seems to be some defect in the size of the SM slot which im guessing is too small. Its definatly smaller than the Image banks. Its 3/32 height.Less than 1/8 but more than 1/16th.

Its width is correct and i dont forsee using SM in it myself at this point but i dont imageine a sm card could slide in.

My Image bank may have been advertised with a 1 year warranty and i may have had double my warranty protection too with my credit card but the warranty may have just been advertised on the site but not sent with the product.I found the reciept but the only warranty ive found so far is Simas 90 day manu warr in the users manual.

I only used the Image bank on about 10 or 15 occasions...it mainly sat here till i started messing with my 707 which had been in the shop and like i say i couldve just went straight thru my 707 to my computer instead (till i recently jammed up my computers memory.)

Im really gonna be sick about getting stung for $206.70 over this Image Bank if i dont come up with some economical way to get it fixed.I sorta doubt the average "Joe" electronics dude,ll know just whats wrong-cheap.
Like i say ...fine china wouldve easilly survived its lil tumble.

Unfortunatly there really isnt much option for big compact storage at this point.
Thanx

Are you offering me some assistance?Or just advice? Im not quite sure from interpreting your post. Its my Image Bank that wont start. Its about 7 months old.

I guess ill have to track down all the purchase info i can find to see if i have any other warranty...also go back to the website and give them a call regardless to see what they charge for a repair.Ill be surprised if its reasonable...i mean it might aproach the cost of another.Simas got their fone # right on the back.Figured some other reader might have an idea.

I kinda doubt some local "Joe,ll know just whats wrong...and fix it cheap but if my warrantys void i guess ill have to givit a try.

I found two places for a 2.5" to 3.5" (lap top - PC) hard drive adapter.

One was computergeeks or whatever (this site was mentioned quite often in this forum) for about $4. It is simple the connector which plugs into each hard drive and two side rails to mount it in a 5.25" slot.

I opted for http://www.directron.com which sells a similar device, but it's only the connector adapter (no side rails) for ~ $14. No specifics on construction, but from the image it looked better, plus I am going to install it in a removable hard drive tray so I can easily insert the laptop (IT) hard drive into my PC for copying.

I have no experience with computergeeks, I have very good experience with Directron - excellent selection of quality computer parts - especially removable hard drive racks/drives and aluminum cases, etc....

Since i had jammed up my desk top computer with photos i was considering buying an external hardrive...someone recommended a Lacie for about $200...but i bought another image tank instead. Now you mention "Hardrive Converters" and it sounds too good to be true.

It looks like i have 2 IDE connections on the back bottom of my desktop computer...is that where id connect an "internal IDE"?

If i connected one of my notebook hardrives to my desktop computer using the "Laptop Hardrive Converter" would i suddenly simply have 20gb extra storage space memory or would there be extra reprograming of some sort necessary to utilize it?

PS ,the top panel of my ms to CF card adapter popped apart a few
days ago when i was slidding in a memory stick.I know you must
think i must be some rough unco-ordinated 300lb turkey ...not so
...this stuff is fragile,very fragile.
Im sitting here with 5 ms sticks i want to see wondering if my

Hello again Dan,

Generally most PC's have room for 4 internatl IDE devices. Some of the newer machine will take 8 or more.. Lets stick with the 4 until it proves differnt.

The Average PC have 2 internal (on the motherboard) IDE connectors. Each connector supports up to 2 devices (master and slave). Any existing Harddrives, CDROM's, DVD's but not floppies will take up 1 of your 4 possible positions.

Most PCs will are setup with one Harddrive, and one CDROM or DVD. Usually the harddrive is on the first (Primary) IDE connector setup as the Master drive. If you wanted to install the laptop drive in your PC you would most likely set the Laptop HD as a slave, and connect it to the same cable that attaches to your existing Harddrive inside your PC. Very few PC's have External IDE connectors. Infact I have only seen this in a very few cases where people have added it themselves...

Hope this helps..

As for what to do with the broken IB... I would suggest trying to
find a friend that has some electronics skills. There is a good
change the CF connector could be soldered back onto the PCB and get
it up and running again. Been awhile since I had my IB open, so I
don't recall if this connector is Surfance mount, or Pins... If it
is surface mount it might be a bit tougher (but not impossible) to
fix..

I will pay the shipping if you want to send it to me ;-)

Well after using my image bank just a few times in the safety and
security of my office area i apparently broke it.I sat it on a file
rack next to my desk which stood no higher than my desk (2 1/2 feet
) so i wouldnt have to step over the cord but immediatly caught the
cord with my foot and it fell the short distance into a bunch of
soft garbage.Looks like it landed on the CF card and memory stick
because the little tray i slide the CF card into looks detached
from the circuit board on one side and the cf card seems to slide
in deeper on one side than the other. The poer wont turn onIm sure
even fine china would have withstood the little tumble it
took.Unfortunatly since i have no power i cant tell if my files are
ok in the hardrive. My 90 day warranty expired 4 months ago and i
guess this wouldnt be covered.
Any tips or advice would be apreciated...seems like i should get
power at least.
I just ordered another Image Bank with power Bank but im not going
to be willing to erase my hardrive to formate it.
