Lexar Memory sticks available at techstore!

Received order confirmation email, just after the order was placed. Then two hours later received a status update email saying that it was setup to be shipped FedEx 2 day economy for delivery within 1 to 2 days, and was being shipped from the South Bend wharehouse. Said another email with tracking information would follow after pickup. Status is also available via the website.

So far, a very good experience with Techstore....

I was just thinking that the lexar memory sticks may based on the Sony memory gate sticks which cost retail @ 159.00. The new Lexar stick retail also @ 159.00.

Does anyone know more about this Lexar stick?

Bradly, are you in the advertising business, or just a good salesman ? If not, you might want to change career, you're good at it (selling products). Just kidding =)

It seems the prices of MS at techstore are significantly higher than the usual (though still below MSRP). You said that service is good, some people would rather pay higher than usual just to have good service. Cheers!

You're comparing them to the Sony memory sticks(their price is $95 on those). Techstores sony memory sticks are about the same as other places(also out of stock like the others).

The lexar memory sticks are based on their faster controller, giving you faster writes/reads when compared to the sony sticks. Hence, they're a little higher in price. About what I was expecting them to be(or should I say hoping). $20 more for a faster memory stick isn't that bad IMO. Just have to wait and see how much faster they turn out to be.....

I normally like to get a low price and good service, not pay extra for the service.

Not in the sales business. Possibly should think about it..... :) Need the extra money to buy all these toys!!

See ya....

Its me again. Do you by any chance read something if the Lexar MS is compatible with products requiring Magicgate MS ? At the moment, I'm satisfied with the Sony MS I have with me right now, but might buy more in the future. Now, I want to invest on something that will be compatible to devices I might purchase in the future, like the Sony MP3 player, etc. If you received your Lexar, let us know how it works.
Aaarrrgghhh. I need a second job to afford these toys, hahaha.

Lexar Media, Inc. announced today that Sony Corporation (NYSE: SNE) has made a $2 million equity investment in Lexar Media in connection with a strategic partnership to apply Lexar Media's high-speed flash memory controller technology to the Memory Stick. The two companies signed definitive agreements formalizing their previously announced Memorandum of Understanding that Lexar Media will license its controller technology to Sony with the goal of improving the read/write speed of the Memory Stick to transfer 64 megabytes of data in less than ten seconds. As part of the agreement, Lexar has received a license to manufacture and market Memory Stick media under Lexar's brand.

By this, I read that it has a built in controller of some sort..... can't say for sure though. There doesn't seem to be very much information available on this right now. I'll find out more definative answers this weekend, when I can compare the Sony 64mb with the Lexar 64mb.

Check out the following excerpt from http://www.sharkyextreme.com article:

"The small "stick of bubble-gum"-sized memory sticks offer capacities from 4MB up to 64MB in everything from Sony digital cameras to MP3 players, and Sony plans to introduce 256MB memory sticks by the end of 2001 and 1GB memory sticks by 2003.

However, in order to satisfy customer needs, Sony has admitted that the current memory stick technology isn't up to par in terms of data transfer rates, so they've paired with flash memory producer Lexar in an effort to boost overall speed.

Lexar personnel told Sharky Extreme that consumers can expect a speed gain of between four to eight times the current memory stick average data transfer rate of 1.5MBs a second, with the goal being to allow users to download 80MB of information to a memory stick in approximately 10 seconds.

The new Lexar-enhanced Sony memory sticks will appear on the market in the second half of 2000."

How about the 1GB MS in 2003!!! Looking forward to it.
$$$$$ they cost alot but they have them!
I sort of figured they would be, with them being faster and all.

So you went for the expensive shipping and handling!

It's $14.00 just for 3-day UPS and $8.00 for UPS ground. That's a bit high but nobody that has these in stock could do better (and this was the lowest overall price) so I went for it, too.

Any idea if there is any difference in write-time between the 64mb and the 32mb??

Anxious to see how these perform in an FD-95 with the MSAC-FD2M adapter (i.e. whether the adapter limits the transfer rate - it is a lexar "flash-path" designed adapter I understand.

I've had the impression that the problem is a bit different than users imagine. If you go by the published figures for Memory Stick, Compact Flash, and SmartMedia, the current Memory Stick is about the same speed and somewhat faster than other media. It seems to be the devices that are not behaving up to par, not necessarily a Memory Stick problem itself.

It would seem that the decision to team up with Lexar is to give both a marketing impetus in grabbing mindshare as well as to aid in more rapid production and introduction of the Memory Stick. Smart move either way.

I wanted to have it for a trip to Mackinac Island this weekend.

Can't verify yet, but they're suppose to be the same rate for any size.... four to eight times faster than the originals!! Hoping that parts true, atleast for the camera, if not for the readers also.

None of the info. I have seen on these versions mentions the MagicGate compatibility so I seriously doubt they have it!

I seem to recall that the write speed to Stick on 95s is slower than writing to floppy.....weird. Since that seems to be the limiting factor, it begs the question as to whether a larger Stick buys you a performance improvement.

Check the various reviews, this site and Megapixel.net. It was covered at one or tuther.

Well, I went for the 3-day ship - ordered at midnite Central Time on Wed. nite and UPS tracking shows them logged in at my local UPS terminal at 5:00 a.m. today (Fri.). So far, the TechStore experience is looking good!

Depending on UPS, I will probably have in hand today - and the floppy adapter for the FD-95 has not yet arrived from a different source (ordered locally two weeks ago). :(

I went to the Lexar Media web site, but could find no reference to a memory stick. Maybe I was just looking in the wrong place.

Is this product the same as the SmartMedia flash memory card?

Their "compatibility matrix" doesn't list the DSC-F505, so I kinda wonder about that.

Hi Mark,

Through all the research I did over the past month the only thing I could find about description at lexar's site was the press release of 4-18 00. It's amazing that they went from that press release to delivery in such a short time. My order was in Kansas yesterday headed for colorado(today,I hope). I'm not worried about compatability considering Sony's contractual involvement with Lexar.
