.....it's not as intrusive as email and perhaps there could even be an option to block sender to filter the wackos and trolls out.......I think you have a valid suggestion......

You already can if they have allowed private emails in their profile setup. If they haven't allowed it you wouldn't be able to PM them anyway. What you are asking for therefore is a bit pointless.

Say YES or NO or Don't care in your subject title. I for one would
love the ability to send PMs to posters.

Cheers!

would love to have the ability to BLOCK certain members. I think if we had the ability to put someone into our blocked list, (so we did not see any of their posts) it could, and should, head off any problems with that person.

If you want to censor information coming to you, your idea is excellent. Ultimately you may even block entire topics and forums. And whole Internet!

But if you'd like to censor voice of the others, the 'complant' button already exists.

No, I have no desire to block someone from POSTING. That is taking away their rights to post. My thought is this. We all know that moderation is sometimes unfair, and the moderators really don't have the time or desire to settle daily bickering. So, let the members settle it by themselves. HOW? By each member having their own BLOCK LIST. If I can block someone that causes trouble in the forums, then I would not see their posts anymore. Just think for a second what would happen if everyone had the ability to BLOCK certain members on their own. For example: If a troll causes trouble and numerous people put that person in the BLOCK list, then those people would never see the troller's posts, and therefore the troll would eventually leave because no one was responding to them. We all know a troll only wants attention, and if they are not getting the attention, (because no one sees their posts) they disappear.

That is my thought.

Some forums have the ability to BLOCK other members, BUT, you still see their posts. Alls that happens is that you put that person in your block list and if you TRY to respond it says they are blocked. That, (imo) does not work. Why? Because you still saw what they said, and you are more likely to WANT to post back at them. That defeats the purpose.

I want the block list to work this way. If I block someone, I don't see their posts AT ALL, period. That way I don't get ticked off when they attack someone, or start a flame war. If I don't see any of their posts, they can't upset me. But, others who have not blocked that person would still see all of their posts.

Hope that makes sense.

NO....
Sending a PM, is done through an intenal mail service, not through your Email.

That's a lovely suggestion.

But it's sad testament to our times how quickly your suggestion about a way to be in closer touch with one another was turned into a call for ways to block each other out.

PS: In other forums with PM privileges, people sometimes amass huge numbers of stored messages. It might be better from the outset to set limits on how many or how long PMs could be kept.

I know this is getting into the area of "rating" posters - a dehumanising and base pursuit IMO - but it may be a useful extension of this idea, to show the number of "blocks" that each poster has been subject to, against his or her name or profile.

So, if we saw that someone had been blocked by many people, we could safely conclude that any further argument or upset would be pointless. If this person had not been much blocked, despite lots of posts over a long period, we might conclude that there had been a misunderstanding somewhere, or that the person was having an "off" day, or that we were...

The problem with blocking, is that some (though not all) of the saltiest and most challenging personalities on these forums, also have genuinely interesting things to say.

If I understand what you are proposing, you would have a thread with response 43, for example, not show up on your screen because he is blocked. Therefore you would have no idea what this person stated or that they had even posted.

Suppose they said something relevant to the conversation? Any post you make subsequent to 43 may be out in left field because of your block.

Also, are you going to block posts which quote number 43? If not you are going to see part or all of his post anyway.

because there just id!ots here that will block you just because you don't own the same brand as they have or just because you posted some negative features, bad quality or personal opinion against the brand they would like to die for.

also, I'd suggest some appropriate limit (50 words?) on such messages.
