Vote Here if you want Private Messaging on DPreview Forums

I would not send PM's, and I probably wouldn't check on them every often either.

When I voted 'yes' I was assuming PM feature would replace the current "public e-mail communication option" and that the feature would be strictly on "opt-in" basis. It would also be very desirable to limit tightly the size of PM messages.

I believe fewer and fewer people find it practical to either publish their private mail address, or to maintain a possibly large number of separate, dedicated mailboxes.

no-do not allow PM's-thats what AIM, ICQ, e-mail...etc is for-what I would like to see is the option to ignore someones posts-that would put an end to alot of the ridiculous flaming and arguments that go on here.

I see no need for blocking anyone, just ignore posts from the person you for whatever reason wish to block . how hard is that?

2x everything = ?
If this thread is going to evolve into mathematics, the only contribution I can make is to remind you that the ostrich deals only with "hole" numbers.

No, I don't private message on other forums why should I here?
I'm amazed at how many are uncomfortable with private messaging.

I use it on other forums to:

provide critique in a less public way than on the open forum; to go into greater detail about what I liked in someone's post or photo;

to provide information I think would be of interest more to the recipient than everyone else;

to give out my email address to a particular person without disclosing it to the world.

I have not found that private messaging is abused. You can generally block anyone who's unpleasant and never hear from that person again. I've never had to block anyone, now that I think of it. I have blocked certain sources of inappropriate comments on my photos, but it was never necessary with any private message.

Private messaging is simply another communications tool. (It's not going to raise your monthly subscription fee.) ;^)

One of the reasons I voted NO earlier is because of the increasing abuse by spam-bots of the PM system. Also, any other member here can spam any other member — bearing in mind that the screening process for membership to these forums is almost non-existent.

I know that you can "block" spammers or other unwanted PMers, but that means having to manually set that block in place each and every time. That may be easy enough with members of the DPR forum, (as they'll just eventually be banned by the site administrators anyway) but if you're flooded with spam-bots, it can get very frustrating.

I dunno how it works with DPR — whether they can block PM spam-bots or not?

The other negative issue with PMs I've seen develop (on other sites) is the increasing but subtle side-effect of reinforcing "cliques", which seems to follow through on to the "public" forum part of the site in question.

Just my thoughts. :)

Say YES or NO or Don't care in your subject title. I for one would
love the ability to send PMs to posters.

Cheers!

would love to have the ability to BLOCK certain members. I think if
we had the ability to put someone into our blocked list, (so we did
not see any of their posts) it could, and should, head off any
problems with that person.
LOL, Conrad, come on now. Really? You do realize what this says
about yourself right? And, I'm not trying to be mean here. I know
you are a very productive member of the forum.
Bryan,

Thanks for the compliments, (I think).

Try to look at it another way for a second, please.

When you were growing up, did you ever face a bully who ran around the neighborhood looking to cause trouble? Yes, you could ignore him, but he still came back with his group of friends trying to intimidate or bully again. Eventually you would either have to face them, or keep running from them and ignoring them. If the bully was older and bigger, you really had no choice. If you had your own group of friends, you could take him on, or .................................

You could BLOCK him and never seen him again.

Now, I know it is not the exact same, because internet bullies pose no threats to anyone. They simply want to argue or stir up trouble. But, having the ability to BLOCK them completely without ever seeing their posts again solve the problem, imo of course. You would not have to exhibit a form of control, or ever be tempted to respond at all, because you would not see that person anymore.

Anyway, it was just my thought, based upon other forums having that ability to BLOCK members. If it doesn't happen here, I will have to live with it as is. It was just my opinion anyway.

Conrad
But come on. If you don't want to read, or feel "forced" to respond
to another member's post, then SKIP OVER THEM!!

Do you really need a "blocking" feature to keep you from reading or
responding to disruptive members' posts? Doesn't reflect very well
on your ability at self-control. ;)

One other thing.

The COMPLAINT button would be used to report nasty posts from basically good members that just get temporarily caught up in a situation. You would NOT want to BLOCK those members that share valuable information. I have seen some very good, and respectable members who get caught up in the occasional nasty threads, and if you block them, then you penalize yourself from getting their knowledge also. The BLOCK feature should only be used on people you really don't want to ever see their posts. And we all know some of those people who share no valuable information and simply want to cause trouble.

if anyone sent me a PM. That's what email is for. If you don't know their email address, then that is probably a good indication that they want to limit thier contact with you to just the forums.

I ignore the PM features on other sites, and would do so here. I would never see a PM sent to me.

STOP Global Stasis! Change is good!

Now that you've judged the quality of my typing, take a look at my photos. . .

And my non Photo blog:

...where you see nasty posters/posts but you can ignore them...the
same is true in real world...people you would like to ignore are not
invisible by just clicking a button, you see/meet them everyday but
you have to learn how to ignore them.
I block them from entering my home, though. ;)

I don't need an ignore feature here. however. I switched to threaded view a while back and, while it is slower to read, it makes it much easier to ignore the posters who I feel are useless. I just don't click on their posts. It is my own little way of having an ignore feature.
