and that is that it mentions turning off VR
when detaching it from a camera body- isn't it safe to detach if, as
i always do, the camera itself is turned off?
David, you must have misunderstood the manual.

I quote the manual:

"Do not turn the camera power OFF or remove the lens from the camera while the vibration reduction mode is in operation."

They mean that you should not turn off the camera while VR is actually busy doing its VR operation.

Okay, i see now! Yeah, that won't be a problem for me as i am never in the middle of shooting(running the VR) when turning the body off to change lenses-
Thanks for the clarification.

Dear Gaber,
You are the right one I should ask, you have 18-200vr now the
70-300vr. Please post your review opinion between these two lens.
Thanks.

--I am the wrong one to ask. I'm very satisfied with the 18-200 lens. I've taken terrific pictures with it, never had "creep" as others complain about nor any other issues. I use the 18-200 as my walkaround lens and if I will be doing wildlife, I go with the 70-300. The 70-300, IMO, is the sharper of the two.

The only other lens I could compare the 18-200 lens to is the 18-55 (non-VR) which was good for me as well, however I sold it as it was unnecessary since I had the 18-200.

Hope that helps.

I have both as well, and agree with the above.
My 18-200 does creep, but I don't really care, as I seldom take shots
pointing up or down, and my left hand would be on the lens barrel anyway.

Congrats! I could only afford the 80-200 f/2.8. How much did you
have to shell out for the 70-300?
Your 80-200 f/2.8 is a pro ~$900 lens, about 2x the price of the 70-300 VR.
I have the 70-300 VR, and though it's exceptional for the price and range
it covers, the 80-200 2.8 is, by all accounts, better.

A great story and better shots Brooks.

I have been hoding out for the 70-200mm but this one is really really tempting - a solid lens.

Hi David,

it great to hear you're happy with this lens - I think many of the people who have replied to you will agree that for the price the performance it gives is simply excellent.

I'd suggest that you try to use it stopped down about 2 stops to get the best IQ.....AND it works brilliantly with extension tubes and teleconvertors - I can get to about 1:2 macro and to about 630mm (300*1.5 crop factor*1.4x TC) all with VR !!!

Hope you enjoy it ...... it's a fine,fine lens !!!!!!!!!!

One thing I have noticed is that the black paint on the very front of my lens, between the glass and the outer rim, is starting to 'come away' from the actual lens - has anyone else had this ? (I look after my kit very well indeed so it's not been abused in any way).........

Anway...............here are some shots with mine.............

Aaaaargh

Just missed this thread by a week and I already got my sigma 70-300mm APO DG with motor for my D90. At first impression i did not like the noise it makes compared my sillent nik 18-55VR and 55-200VRs. I am yet to go out and do my bit of experimentation with it, but after reading through this thread I felt awful ;(

Can any one who has this lens give me some tips to get best out of it, before I threw it away for the Nik 70-300mm VR

If you go over to the Nikon SLR forum and do a search, you will dind quite a bit of info I think.

As I recall with those lenses, the long end is a bit soft. The VR takes away any softness due to the user shaking or moving a bit.

BUT FWIW, this lens is far better as I recall than the Nikon 70-300mm w/o VR. Sigma has several but posters with the APO version were consistently taking really good sharp shots. It was on my list for quite a while becasue it is such a value.

-this is the largest thread(in responses) i have ever started, i am wondering a bit what's up with that, i can only surmise that this particular lens is incredibly well regarded and that whole bunches of people own it.

Temperatures will be warming a bit(out of the teens and twenties!) today and tomorrow, so i may be able to try it out on some of my backyard bird friends.
Thanks all for posting & feedback!
