1.4xExtender + 70-200 F4 IS

Those don't look any better than the ones I was getting with the 2.8.
Sorry, I expected better photos.
Professional nature and wildlife photographer Art Wolfe has switched from the 70-200 f2.8 to the 70-200 f4 IS recently. He uses it regularly with the EF 1.4x II and also a 25mm extension tube for close-ups.

To see some of his work using this lens go to:

If it's good enough for one of the world's best known wildlife and nature photographers, it's good enough for me.

Yes, the Canon 1.4x would do much better or you've just got a focus issue with your test.

Here you are, Sigma 100-300 f/4 vs Canon 70-200 f/4 IS + Sigma 1.4x TC:

Perhaps a Canon TC would give a better result?

Wide open at f5.6, 246mm

100% crop

f8 at 229mm

100% crop

This is an excellent combination and is very close on center frame sharpness at equivalent aperture to my 300f4L non-IS. The 300 prime does have a noticeable advantage at the edge though.

You don't take a photograph. You ask, quietly, to borrow it. Author Unknown

Japanese scientists have created a camera with a shutter speed so fast, they can now photograph a woman with her mouth shut.

What other lenses can it be used on - none of the EF-S lenses, right?

Would be nice to be able to get a little more reach when needed on a normal/mid range zoom such as the 17-55 EF-S lens.

I don't think it is recommended for for those types of lenses.

It just won't fit on an EF-S lens. The design is such that the front elements of the extneder actually extend into the lens mount of the lens. Because an EF-S has the rubber ring and elements that protrude from the mount there is no way to put on the extender.

The Canon extenders are strictly for telephotos and only specific ones at that.

yeah they fit relatively few lenses, mostly the 200mm and up primes, the 70-200 zooms and 135L, perhaps a couple others, not sure.

the non-canon fit a much wider array of lenses, however, I somewhat doubt that even those would fit an EF-S.

are they crops ? or original size ?

if it is natural size, it is natural that they look sharp - when hair are several pixels widht even with blur they will still look sharp.

It looks like the two are pretty equal (Kenko 1.4x pro and Canon 1.4x
II). But, some tests online are showing that they are a little
different. Any of you have similar findings? Is it better to just
bite the bullet, pay an extra $100 for Canon?
I read a number of reports and tests online before buying a Kenko Pro 300 DG 1.4x. The consensus seemed to be that the Kenko is at least equal and probably sharper in the centre; the Canon is probably sharper in the corners (full-frame corners, that is). So for me with a crop camera and no plans to change, the Kenko could actually be sharper and will certainly be no worse. Add to that the lower cost (especially if bought from HK) and the fact that it fits lenses such as the 100/2.8 Macro which the Canon doesn't, and the choice was clear.

Has anyone compared the 70-200+1.4xTC with Canon 400mm f5.6 lens? I shot a brick wall with both & cropped the 70-200 to the same size as the 400 & found it to be much sharper than the 400.

I compared it to a Sigma 150-500 OS and found the Canon +TC sharper. In fact I even did a comparison cropping the Canon+ TC to about the same size as the Sigma shot at 500mm and found them close with the slight edge going to the Canon setup.
