Here three botanical macro photographs from a recent trip to Kauai, Hawaii. There is a fun place in Kauai called Smith's Tropical Paradise. STP is a family owned garden that holds a luau and has a lot of different plants with information on each. There are a lot of pretty tame doves, peacocks, and more there if you are interested in photographing birds.

I had a good time studying the light on the leaves of this Taro plant. The afternoon sun was a little harsh, but provided some great backlighting. The first two shots are from underneath the plant, while the third is a more normal view.

I used a Nikon D80 with a 60mm f/2.8 Macro lens (the old AF non-D version); hand-held and manually focused; Aperture priority mode with -0.3EV to preserve highlights; processed from RAW in PS CS2 with minimal post-processing.

Full EXIF and larger photographs can be seen on the Flickr pages for each. Comments and constructive critiques are appreciated.

I love the 'lime' green colours. I can see this being a nice set of 3 pics in a frame just as you have posted them (vertically).

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for your comments. I would think about framing them horizontally with the third as the center, but I would have to play around with different arrangements a bit first.

DID YOU GET ANY OF THE POI OR PIG??
IT IS A PRETTY LAYOUT THERE...
We went to the luau -- it's pretty small-time and a little cheesy, but still fun. The food was excellent, and I did try poi (it was good on the Hawaiian purple sweet potatoes/yams, whichever they were, and with the pig), and the kalua pig was excellent -- the best pig I've ever eaten.

The layout is indeed very nice, and quite a wonderful place for someone who likes botanical macros. :)

Thanks for looking,
