Just returned a 50D, low ISO shots were nice but:

-- firmware 1.01, very high chroma noise at 800+
-- err99 lockups needing the battery to be reinserted

Would have exchanged it but none were available.
May buy again or wait to see if the 5D II is worth the added cost.

Post if you returned yours and why...

and if it error99's again! firmware 1.0.2

thank Canon for L and BMW for M

Returned 50D for repair within 1 week of getting it.

Narrow Red/Purple verticle lines in sky/cloud highlights (only taken landscape views so far).

Red/Purple lines were in same place on each image.

Awaiting camera return and any comment from Canon UK !

Mine went back after 2 weeks! Locked up once with Busy on top display, had about 12 Err99 in that time, also when using the 1.4X tc it acted erratic and would not lock into focus! and the battery grip screw became stripped from removing and re-installing it.
I should have my new one today, I can only hope it will be better!

Aside from the errors and issues, the 50D does take some amaizing images when it is working :)

I NEVER and I mean NEVER buy the first of anything coming out. After reading all the problems here and across the net I'm glad I held tough as much as I would love to get my hands on the 50D or 5DmrkII. All I can say is Canon has some nerve! There is no way they aren't aware of these problems. It's just that their bottom line is more important. I am planning on the 5DmrkII but not until I know its not riddled with annoying problems. I would never accept a body that I have to pull the battery to reset lockups. That is insane. Anyone claiming its no big deal is just trying to justify it since they are stuck now. BTW: my 20D had the er99 probably three times in 4 years (1000's of pics). The 40D NEVER.
Let this be a lesson!

--Return it, no way! I have NO problems with it, the IQ is great & the camera operates perfectly as most of them do. A few people have had problems sure but out of how many cameras sold? Do you know?

A friend just returned his Nikon 300D for a Canon 50D. I still have a Kodak Instamatic.

Mine goes back on Monday, just got my RMA from Berger Bros (these folks are top notch!!) Several Err 99's with multiple types of CF cards and lenses. I think it is a shutter/mirror issue. Sounds like you fired the shutter on "bulb" when it fails. But just pulling the battery and putting it back in clears it.....

Still, I am returning for a different body.

A lesson on what? How to make silly decisions based on anecdotal reports on the net?

I've purchased XTi, 40D, 50D, 17-55 2.8 IS, 70-200 F4 IS L and 580EX2 all as soon as they were available and have not suffered for it.

Now, if you made that argument based on initial release pricing vs. prices eventually coming down, that I could understand.

The only lesson here is to not believe everything you read on the Internet. A few people may be having some issues, but assuming that they are widespread, or that you'll experience the same thing is a HUGE leap.

There were a ton of similar postings when the 40D first came out... yet nothing panned out as a major issue with the camera and there are a ton of happy users out there, myself included.

There's nothing wrong with waiting, if you are inclined to do so. And who knows... there might really be an issue brewing. But trolling around in thread after thread crying "the sky is falling," when you don't even own the camera, serves no purpose and simply puts your own credibility into question.

What percentage of the 50Ds purchased do you image were returned? I would guess 3 to 5% if that many.

Those that are perfectly happy are out enjoying their terrific cameras. It ever has been thus!

Returned my first one for lubricant splatter on the AA filter (firmware 1.01).

Received the second camera while I still had the first and tested the two extensively across the entire ISO range in low light. I can find no difference between firmware 1.01 and 1.02 other than a slightly different tone curve and lower (for 1.02) default NR settings when opening the RAW files in DPP. When I say lower I mean the numerical value of the NR sliders where the 1.01 might default to a value of 13 the 1.02 would default to 8 (less NR). With all sliders set to 0 on both files I can see no difference in noise anywhere in the frame.

The second camera has been perfect with the exception of one ERR99 out of about 700 frames so far.

I agree.

I received one of the first 40D's shipped by Calumet Photo and it's been perfect for the past year after thousands of frames. No issues whatsoever.

My first 50D had a dirty (lubricant) splattered AA filter and I would not have returned it if Canon would acknowledge and condone a proper wet cleaning method. I was not interested in taking the risk to clean it myself with the new flourine coating and did not want to send a new camera to Canon service for sensor cleaning.

I am enjoying the replacement 50D even more than the 40D. This is one incredible camera and a very nice upgrade.

Mine would lockup on with an Err 01 - Lens Communication Error and would not AF with any of my Canon lens. Boxed up and returned to amazon for a refund, that took 6 phones due to them messing up on refunding the return insured shipping charges.

I'll wait to buy another until they release a firmware update and hopefully a fix for all the Err's that have been reported.

I bought a 50D the other day, I currently had a 5D and 40D so I sold the 40D and got a 50D. At first I was nervous because I was hearing about all these err99 lock ups and what not.

However - I am so glad I upgraded. The 50d adds two more stops worth of iso, and you can easily take iso 3200 and de noise it to have outstanding images. The extra 5 megapixels will help alot with cropping and just picture quality.

The lens micro adjustment feature should have been added 3 models ago.. its a great feature! 50D is great, I hope the 5II will impress me as much.

Go buy another one, or wait a month and get another one.

The OP'er isn't asking if your enjoying your 50D. He's asking us if we returned it and why.

I was going to return it because the images were so soft with the 28-135 lens, they were worse than the P&S it was replacing. Then (through some coaching by the wonderfully helpful people here on the forum) I learned how to correctly adjust the settings and microadjust the lens and WOW what a wonderful camera!!!

Now I won't give it up for anything. I am going to a bonsai show this weekend so hopefully I will have some nice pictures to share.
