dnd- Thanks! In general, if you just want to freeze such action, anything at or above 1/500 should do. The 1/2500 in this case may well have helped with the bouncing of the camera in the boat, along with the IS. What I do is use aperture prioity, and thus the camera selects the fastest shutter speed for that aperture for the "correct exposure", ( or whatever EV comp is set) This way you can get the depth of field you want with the aperture, check and see that the shutter speed is fast enough, and perhaps raise the ISO if not. On a nice sunny day like I was working with, it was no problem getting the fast shutter speeds....Peter
