Why you should backorder your 5D II now!

Thanks for the link. I ordered it too. Ordinarily I would wait for Xmas coupons and discounts but I'm on a trip over Christmas so it's worth a few hundred bucks to have the Mark II with me.

100% agree with your theory. This is a new kind of camera attracting new kind of customers. I didn't have upgrading on my mind since my 5D still works great but the HD video and new cool features are very tempting. I can sell all me video equipment since it not even 1080P. The sample clips are amazing.

Yep, me too. I'm pretty sure that 24-105 with IS will be a great walkaround lens.

I've been shooting with the crop-sensor cameras since the days of the D30 and the 17-40 f4L spends the most time on my camera. I'm looking forward to the IS and the wider range.

I'll predict 5D II will be under super high demands and might be sold
out till the next year.

The quality of video so far look amazing and at 38mb/s (insane rates)
The video alone is going to make many indie movie makers buy and try
this thing. That in itself is going to create a lot of buzz that
would only further fuel the fire.

Canon has said this will be the best looking (noise and image
quality) sensor they have produced and we know once the first few set
of high iso are out there is going to be huge flurry of buyers.

The combination of video (especially 1080P ) and SLR will bring
curious new buyers.

The holiday season and the ability of having a SLR and a 1080P camera
in one small package make this a dream gift.

Canon might not be as efficient as they want producing these senors
and the components around it and may not initially be able to produce
enough units.

Lastly, canon might intentionally under produce this camera (like
nintendo and others do) to create more demand.

So I'd put my name on this thing as soon as I could.
How much did Canon pay you to post this sales pitch?

The sample video on Canon japan site was really awesome. I always wanted to shoot more video or even short movies. My 5D is doing just fine, especially since I have a calibrated split screen on it and use it with my zeiss and leica lenses. I stitched a lot of landscape shots, so I don't really need the extra pixels. However, the video is the clincher for me.

As someone who has already suffered through multiple 150 message threads on this subject, let me give you some advice, don't bother.

Yes, you are right, an SLR is a joke in many ways for producing a film, but people here just don't want to hear it. They are going to call you names, tell you that you lack vision, and say you are afraid of the future, because you are raining on their parade. They all imagine that now that they can shoot HD on their SLR, they are all going to be the next Steven Sodeberg, ignoring that he got where he was shooting on the same consumer cameras they could have been shooting on this whole time.

The goal is to overcome the deliberate nature of the process.

I bet that 17-40 will be a great lens on the 5Dmk2, I Think I will need to look for one of those too.

I was in China last fall, products in China from Japan or US are very expensive, you will pay maybe 20% more in a city like Shanghai. Their currancy is the RMB, trading at maybe 7 to 1 US dollar.
Sure will be plenty of demand in China does anyone know how much
money that is in China...it would probably be like picking up a
digital back

I'd say go and buy the original 5D before they are sold out... You
get pretty much the same tool (less Mpix, but 12 Mpix is really
enough) for a LOT less money.

If you want to make movies, buy a camcorder. I am a firm believer
that when you try to do too many things with one tool, you end up
doing all things half-a$$.

Alex
Alex, you provide sanity in a sea of frenzy. Even beyond that, I think most of the complainers have never even seen a 5D.

I've said it befoe, I'll say it again, the price of the 5D will go up, because it will be the purists camera to have.

What many of these folks really need is an iPhone.

I suspect the 17-40 is too soft for the 5D MkII. At least my copy isn't sharp enough even on the 5D and the reviews confirm it isn't the sharpest L lens.

I have the MkII on order from Amazon and now I'm looking for glass to support all those pixels. I expect it's prime time.

I have heard the same, although the 17-40 has been nice on my 20D.

I am looking forward to the true wide angle I will finally have with the 5D MkII. But even the 24-105 will be wider than I have been able to shoot so far and I expect that the 17-40 will only be used occasionally.

If I'm wrong, though, then I can hope I've got a good copy or else I'll be looking for a good prime lens in that range. I have a Sigma 20 f1.8 EX that's OK on the crop cameras but (as far as I have seen) it doesn't cut it on full frame.

Let me start by saying I work for a very successful Video/Film Production house. We will most defiantly be grabbing a couple of these. In addition our number just came up on the red camera and we have purchase a couple of them, we will also by the new xd cams as they are the new network standard. We will not however be purchasing Nikon anything..... Now we buy all this because the market demands it.For example we are hired all the time to shoot on the red camera just because it is the red camera. THEY COMPLETELY DISREGARD all the extra effort that goes into using the camera and justify the excessive cost because it is the red. Most of the projects weve done have been for standard def or web use. It is ridicules they capture at 16 times the resolution required and spend hundreds of extra hours to produce something that we have to over sample to a resolution they could have shoot with any camera and achieved the same results. But what are you going to do refuse there money there is no changing there mind. Now the 5d for us will primarily be used to pick up B-roll, timelapse ,behind the scenes and web based footage. When compare to what is available ie a p2 and mini pro35. It is a steal, plus it is a heck of a lot smaller then anything out there. Customers will love it because the will be able to add a low light camera for very cheap.

However the one thing that keeps this thing from completely cannibalizing the video market is the simple features they Left out. IE time code, swivel Lcd Customizable compression settings ect. Because of this the 5d still remains a DSLR with a video mode. I believe canon did this intentionally and specifically built a camera that fills a very small void for ALOT of people. I think canon nailed it as a business and deserves a standing O. The OP is right everyone is going to have one of these!
