if you could do me a favor and take an ISO 3200 shot, of mixed light (but that it exposes well), of a JPEG of the camera, using say the dynamic B&W mode, zero noise reduction (or as low as possible) and post the shot in full size somewhere of a crop of it?

I do know there will be noise. I am trying to evaluate how well it does in B&W as B&W is more forgiving.. and I do a lot of shooting in B&W.

I am considering buying this camera instead of a micro four thirds now, and wait for an "LX3" in micro four thirds. I will wait to see if Olympus announces something interesting but I have a hunch it won't happen in u4/3rds for now.

Really if Panasonic just had released the LX-3 with a 4/3rds sensor, I wouldn't be thinking about it. As it is, I just want to make sure.

Thanks in advance very much!

Well, OK, I didn't exactly follow directions, but here's a crop of "Standard" mode, with its default noise setting:

Here's a link to the original:

Hope this helps!

my bet is not much more larger, but I could be wrong. We'll see when micro four thirds comes out in that factor- it will.
Can you imagine how very much larger and heavier the LX3 would have
to be if it had as large a sensor as you wish for!

it has enough data, that with some cleverness, it could still be used in some B&W situations. Thanks again.

Thank you very much. I downloaded the photo and checked with windows preview and it looks much cleaner than the internet photo. When I zoom in & out, I see more noise but still I am amazed as it looks very good in B&W in my 15.4 inches screen. I am sure some of the detail might be missing but very usable to have a 8x10 ISO 3200 photo from a small size sensor esp considering its f/2 lens. Is this directly from camera or a raw processed photo?

Same here. I downloaded the pic and it looks ridiculously good even on my 22" monitor. These BW settings make that thick noise APPEALING, in my opinion. Even the dynamic range is great! Did you apply any PP whatsoever?

If anyone else wants to upload any other picture using this "technique" (with a dimmer light, perhaps?), I think it could be a fun thread... :D

Cheers!

I think I can make my own mind about whether this can work to an extent, in some shots, or not. Thanks for the thought though.

I thought the original looked pretty good too. I know the OP didn't ask for this, but I was curious how the photo would look with a bit of noise reduction (Noiseware). To me it looks really good. Though I would like to see how it ultimately prints out. I am very tempted to get an LX3 myself.

tricky low light performance (particularly in mixed light/tungsten), really slow/bad usability, and although the lens is sharp (a saving grace), it's slow (F4).

All technically 'full-frame' cameras no less...

and for the zoom folks...

As for the DP-1(which I own) I used it as an example of the body dimensions of a compact with an (almost) APS-c sized sensor. Personally I could care less for a zoom as a fixed 40-ish lens would serve my needs 90% of the time.

It actually looks pretty good for ISO 3200 from a compact. I have a few ASA 400 film scans in B/W that look just as grainy.

I agree. Nice portraits, Jack. I really like that grainy effect in b/w shots. Today we have software that actually creates that look. My how things have changed.
