hi,

the same thing is happening to me. the zoom trigger can only allow me to do a few things. when you say you received it, did you mean, you just got it or you mailed the camera to them and received it? coz, my girlfriend spoke to someone and they said to send them the camera and they'll check it out. you might want to call canon customer support and see what they can do for you.

Yep, exact same thing happened to me. You tap the zoom, and it zooms all the way in, but then you can't zoom out. None of the other buttons work unless you press the buttons WHILE holding down the zoom lever/button.

Took it back to Best Buy, got another one, and it seems to be working a few weeks later. Mine was the second G2 returned that day with the same problem.

Apparently, this problem may be caused at the factory when they load the camera with the firmware. I guess something goes wrong. I wonder if anyone has ever fixed this defect by uploading a new copy of the firmware. Just curious. If it worked, it would be a good solution for people who get their G2 through mailorder.

After reading lots of postings here, seems like folks in the North America seems to have high percentage of faulty G2? Or is it happening to all new users around the world? I got my new black G2 3 weeks ago in Singapore. Seems fine. Or am I being lucky?

You're just not going to see a lot of posts from people saying that their G2 works fine. For example, similar to Chrissy, mine works fine but it wouldn't normally occur to me to post that fact.

.... Jim
I bought mine for full retail last November, in a camera store, in
Seattle. Have not had problem 1 with it.

no, we bought ours directly from the shop also and we've encountered the same problem everyone has...frozen...with of course the exception for a few features when you pull on the zoom trigger. oh maaaan! i just want it fixed. you know what i mean?

that's a known problem with newer G2's , you have to send it for repair, but as far as I know it's a simple firmware problem that's solved within minutes. try to do it yourself updating the firmware manually.

if that doesn't work, don't worry, canon already knows about that, and the know how repair it, just send it for repair or if you can exchange your camera for another...

I was away for two days, so sorry for not communicating my situation further. I called Canon but tech. support here in Cz was not there at 2:30 pm ... it was friday - weekend start ;-)

After I posted my message, I of course checked the battery indicator - battery seemed to be "full". I tried to charge battery but that was not the problem ... After few minutes, display went black and appeared only when I got to menu (holding zoom button).

You know, I really don't care what actually causes the problem. If I go to buy stupid bulb, salesman tries it to see if it works. My friend arranged the G2 for me thru one of the largest PC stores in Czech Rep. If the person selling him G2 would turn it on, I would probably not post here at all, because he would not sell it ...

I am not sure I will try to reload firmware into camera. I am not sure I want to do it because of warranty issues. My G2 simply does not work and goes back to the organisation who sold it to me. Tomorrow morning I will give it last chance once I get to my work.

I am not trying to be negative or so, I know that reality is sometimes as it is :-), but if my message turns someone's decision into not going with G2, then it's Canon's fault and they SHOULD do something about their G2 reputation ...

Cheers,

Seems I'm having the same common problem with my G2. All of the buttons are frozen and the zoom will only zoom all the way in without any precise control. I am VERY upset about this. Very expensive camera for me and within one month of purchase it already doesn't work. I bought the camera from a retailer in San Francisco and now am in New York so I can't directly take it back for exchange. Canon if you're reading this ..... you'd better get on this problem. This is really not cool. I would recommend anyone considering the G2 to not buy it because of this defect. Pain in my .....

I have to agree with pekr 100%. When you purchase any new item, it should work correctly. You should not have to do immediate firmware updates to get a brand new item to work correctly.

It appears lately that Canon has been having a number of quality control problems with several of their cameras from the A40's autofocus, out of focus low light issues to cracks in earlier G2's now this.

I agree, it should work when you get it - it must be terribly fustrating to pay that much money for something that does not work. I am among the lucky so far - because I'v had mine several weeks and it works fine - i'll will say that if you get a working G2 - it is a wonderful camera!

I've seen enough:( I've been researching a second camera for me wonderful Oly 2100 for several weeks. G2 was high on my list (thanks to Reviews), but user comments about problems are more common here than for any other camera I've looked into. No way.

Do both the Black and Silver G2's have this problem?

Unfortunely, the way you were curious about doesn't work at all.
Users can't do a reload by updating the firmware. The G2 will not allow it.
