on paper Looks Like The ($2699)Canon 5d Mk2 is better that the ($8000)Canon 1Ds Mk3. the 5d Mk2 has a "new" 21mp (same mega pixel has Mk3 1Ds) sensor with ISO up to 25,600( the Mk3 1Ds max at ISO 3200). the 5d does Video at 1080, the 1ds mk3 does'nt even focus in live mode. the 1ds mk3 has a cheap LCD, the 5d mk2 has a Vga LCD. both have weather seals. the only thing i can think that the $8000 dollar does better is :

and better auto focus and

faster FPS 3.9 vs 5 1.1 faster(wow now i can see why it cost $8000)

with the price of the 1ds mk3, I can buy (3) 5d mk2

So do you fell cheated (bigtime) by canon??

no the new 5D has not weather seals
and the viewfinder = 98%
I think the batteries are not the same

but of course the 1Ds is X 2.5 expensive

big time, no more of buying things as soon as they come out of the gate for me.

i bought mine @ 7.8k which now goes for 6.7k and now this for less than half.

They should. I think the 21MP sensor in 5D2 is actually significantly better than the one in 1Ds3 judging by what we know about the 50D sensor. I like to see how's Canon going to address this. May be reduce the price of 1Ds3 and ps the current owners even more.

I knew someone would post this - the 5D2 is still a Full frame 10D with a mildly tweaked 20D AF system like its predecessor - it'll still have a cheap AA filter, take BP511 batteries, have buttons on top which are easily pressed accidently in crowds and do two duties (so you switch Flash Exp comp instead of ISO in the heat of battle in the case of the Mk2) and probably leak like a sieve in a downpour ...... It'll be a Superb camera like its predecessor but a superb CONSUMER camera with consumer build, AF, ergonomics and handling.....

Anyone who bought the 1DS-3 obviously wanted a full on Pro tool which can take the knocks, weather and hammer day in and day out in any environment for years without hitch with the best metering, AF out there ... anyone who just bought the 1DS3 just to one-up everone on the MP race deserves all they get

I Forgot the 5D Mk2 has HDMI for 1080p hi Def pics on the Tv , the 1ds Mk3 has the old 480p RCA conector

Of course, the 1Ds is now obsolete. This shouldn't be a surprise to anybody. It won't be for long, as the next gen will probably be 40MP where I suspect the MP race will plateau and the sensor will apply different ISO ratings appropriately to the light and dark areas of the image. Probaby with both 24p and 30p HD video, and once again it will sell for 7,000 dollars. Anyone that spends that much on that (1Ds) glorified future weather sealed Rebel (750D) is an idiot at this point. The 1Ds is over unless you just have to have that many frames per second right now. The MKIV is just looming around the corner, and when it comes, it will be here to stay for a while. ...maybe like the F1 was to film for so many years.

I can Write What ever I want

Think posts like the OP show just how little people know about cameras and in this case the 1DsMK3.
Im actually a bit relieved the 5dmk2 is actually so lacking compared to the 1Ds.

I'll take the build the AF the FPS the extra functionality the extra usefulness anyday and wont be selling mine anytime soon.
Oh and i have had it for a year..
Idiot..

I agree, the 5DII, like the original is likely to be a killer sensor in a so-so body. Like the 50D it's got all the new gimmicks but the same AF, poor drive speed etc. It challenges the 1DsIII a little more than the original did the 1DsII because resolution is the same but it's still not the all rounder which I expected. If you dont need the resolution or the video then whether its a a significant improvement over the original depends upon how its ISO performance stands up. This to me is the really big question.

Yes...

As a professional 1 series user I need the best picture quality I can get from a Canon.

I think now its better to go to Hasselblad 31 MP MF System where I can get upgrades without loosing so much money (bought my 1DSIII in December 2007).

Maybe Canon will do something like Hasselblad if a new, better 1DS MK IV comes out in near future (Photokina ???? or PMA...)

If not, I must say: not a fair play Canon...

Everyone knows that progress doesn't stop. The 1DsIII still has many advantages over the 5DII, but even if those advantages are less than you would expect because of the price difference, you'll have to accept that Canon moved on and can now produce a better camera than they could a year ago. It would be really worrying if they could NOT do that...

If you feel screwed by progress, you should never buy anything because there will always be something better in due time.

over the original depends upon how its ISO performance stands up.
This to me is the really big question.
My theory is --------- 1:- the Original 5D has the same ISO performance IN RAW as the D3 / D700 (forget JPG comparisons) and 2:- the D300 is very noisy at all ISOs in RAW (Hence the need for Nikon to make 12Mp FF cams), it's covered up with tons of clever NR . 3:- Unless there have been massive breakthroughs in sensor design (there haven't been any for years and years) , I can't see the 5D2 breaking any records for high ISO performance, IT'll kill it for Noise reductiuon Quality in JPG but I doubt the 5D2 will beat the original at ISO3200 RAW Native print size by much if any.... The 1DS3 isn't anything special at High ISOs and the 1DS2 is only a third of a stop noisier than the original 5D which also makes sense given pixel size differences..
Just my thoughts anyway
