heading on vacation next weekend and will be flying to the southwest

I wanted to know if anyone has had a problem with there memory cards after going through the security gate at the airport and is it safe to just leave them in my camera bag and just send them through the security scanners.
thanks

Well... had that ever been a problem, I think you would know about it by now. In other words, I have personally never had any problem.

Should be no problem. I just returned from a trip out West and flew with my D40 in my Lowepro bag inside my carry-on and had no issues.

Hey Lowell,

I fly 2-3 times a month round trip with SD cards in my camera bag (along with the camera and the rest of my stuff). I've been doing this for over year, and no damage yet. So I'd say it's pretty safe to slide that camera bag with all your stuff right through the machine. Just keep an eye on it as it goes through the belt if there are a lot of people around. I always put in last - after my shoes, coat, and laptop bag, so that I can get to the other end before it comes out.

Have a great trip! What part of the southwest are you headed to?

I'm not saying it's a stupid question, in fact the same thing crossed my mind this year with my D80 and 3 2gb cards, but with virtually all airline passangers traveling with some form of flash memory these days, do you really think if there was a problem you wouldn't have heard about it?

Hi Jimi
the only reason I brought it up on the forum was because a guy at BHphoto
said I should have it hand checked at the airport.

Hello Albert
I see you are a seasoned traveler
I will take your advise about putting the camera bag last
but I have a pace maker and I cannot go through the security machine
because it would set it off LOL so I will have to be padded down on the side

after I show them my pace maker card But my wife will be at the other end getting my stuff. We are first flying to Las Vegas and the next day driving to Zion national park and then two days in Bryce Canyon. hope to get some good shots in those places and then back to Las vegas for 4 days
thanks again for the tip

glad to hear that you have not have any problems with your
memory cards
thanks for replying

Lowell,

I have never heard of any problems. But I could offer this advice, take them in your carry-on luggage. The X-ray machines used with carry-on luggage are typically much lower power than the machines that scan checked luggage/freight.

The electronics in your SD card and the electronics in your camera's processor are basically the same in terms of resistance to radiation. And the radiation dose given by hand-baggage inspection machines does not harm them.

If you want to be very sure about your images, take a DVD burner with you. This will produce digital files that are optical pits and about as secure as you can get.

Hi Lowell

My experience is much the same as the other replies, I've carried CF and SD cards regularly around Europe and the USA, both checked and carry-on, without any problems. However, during the recent security issues in the UK when no hand luggage was permitted, the advice given was to remove all memory cards and carry them on your person. The reason given was that some scanning of checked baggage and freight uses high-power electro magnetic and 'other' equipment in addition to X-ray. I haven't heard of any problems, I don't know if EM will damage the data, but now carry on just in case. I carry memory cards with me mainly because if your baggage is lost your pics are also lost.
