New 50D samples.

Those would be where?

This ISO 1600 sample looks better than previous samples. Noise is well controlled and detail is preserved despite the fact that shutter speed is only a tad faster than the minimum desired for handholdability and DoF is shallow at this close distance (not all the jewelry is in focus, although some, such as the yellow-flowered pin, seem to be sharp).

What I can see from the EXIF, it appears in camera sharpness has been set to "low". From another post, the in camera NR was set to low as well, but some of the softness seen in these photos may be due to the in camera setting. Andy can probably answer that though to confirm or refute as my EXIF info could easily be misleading.

The butterfly bush ( assuming that's what it is ) is quite soft in terms of sharpness but hitting it with a fairly large amount of smart sharpen pulls out some detail. The ISO1600 shot has a lot of punch to the color ( EXIF says normal settings for saturation and contrast ) and it can be cleaned up fairly easily.

Course the resolution on these shots is so high that even ISO 200 shots show the fine pixel grain when viewed at 100%. Could jsut be an issue with our 72 dpi monitors viewing extremely small pixels.. I'll let the experts discuss that.

On my 40D I shoot jpgs with sharpness set to 3 out of 7. I just checked an EXIF of one of my jpgs and it reports"low" as well. My 40D jpgs seem sharper on screen but it's too early to draw anything meanigful just yet.

Please forgive the typos! A great speller I am, a great typist I am not!

than on the 40D...especially for it's huge size !! and will make very good 8x12 prints. The 3200...good, but not great. Will make good/acceptable 8x12's and very good 5x7's at least, if not more. We will see what raw and PP can do ...probably improve on my numbers here for now. OK, that's just my opinion. I'm sure you have your own...:)

Obviously it was on in these samples.

Have you noticed the hot pixel in pictures 282 and 299

This seems to be a problem in the new Canon EOS series cameras.

I returned my EOS1D MarkIII back to shop because there was one clearly visible hot pixel in all pictures. What do you think about Canon's quality?

The 1600 is very good, the f1.4 its hard to tell, don't think that lens hacks it very well wide open (why I bought the 85 1.8 and stand further back), shame the nice bright f8 across the river wasnt taken on the 50

Thanks, there are some 450D samples in there as well and I'm bowled over by just how much better the EOS 1Ds MkIII samples are with the same lens. It's like night and day. Maybe I will hold out for FF after all.

50D looks ok, but awkward subject matter makes it difficult to draw comparisons.
