My LX3 arrvied at 9am this am and what a nice piece of hardware! This is Leica material for sure! Excellent feel and weight. Just big enough for my whopper hands. FAST focusing but them I would expect it to be. A real improvement in focus lock speed with the faster lens

Hey Greg. Let's see some Real World photos.....when possible.

Greg,

Nicely done. If you wouldn't mind some more impressions etc, mini review.

I follow your posts , and I hope Leica follows up with a successor to the LX3

Thanks

I say it like it is

Congrats, Greg! I can't wait to see some samples. Please, post ASAP! :))

The body looks very nice and I wonder how different the Leica version would be; and, how much more expensive!!!
Enjoy it,
Louis

i have posted some samples and some comparisons with the LX1 (D-LUX2) and the Fuji F20.

http://www.pbase.com/oluv/lx3test&page=1

so far the camera is really nice, but mine seems either to have a lens-problem, or the leica lens is not leica at all.

Thanks for posting those shots. Please, tell us what kind of problem you had with the lens! To me, your shots LX3 show more details than LX1. Elaborate on your empression!
Thanks again,
Louis

the lens has a serious softness-issue especially at tele.
please have a look at these examples:

http://www.pbase.com/oluv/image/101672124/original

also some other of these shots show softness mostly to the left side. if you examine the examples, you will notice it easily. i am not sure if this is within tolerance, because my LX1 also has some softness, but only wide-open and only at particular focal lengths. but this LX3 lens is much worse. i am really not sure what's going on, but i will bring it back to the dealer on monday and hope that a new one will do better.

wow!... This is, indeed, very troubling!... I hope this problem is only with your lens and you can change the camera!...
Greg, tell us about your lens! :))

does not remove the grip on the front of the camera as they have done in the past. If Leica does not pick the LX3 up, they would be missing. I know they will, the camera feels so good to hold and has more controls than my D3!

Good job Panasonic, now let me get some time with it to see how it does in he most important area, images!

Sorry, but this is such a tired question. No doubt the engineers from Leica and Panasonic are involved in crafting this fine and fast lens. The glass on the D-Lux 3 is perhaps the best on a point and shoot, and the glass on the D-Lux 4 is all that and faster.

Thank you so much for the samples! The IQ looks good, although I see a good amount of noise in the large sizes!... Did you do any PP?... Since you also have a dlux3, how can you compare the IQ?... I do not notice any lens distortion as it was mentioned earlier!

Enjoy it and thanks again,

Louis

i looked at this image here:
http://www.pbase.com/greggebhardt/image/101800377

your LX3 seems to have a similar problem as mine. the image was stopped down to 5.6 but nevertheless the left side is quite soft. if you look at the right side, it is perfectly sharp.

you can also notice it in this image, but not that much:
http://www.pbase.com/greggebhardt/image/101800378

can you do some further tests at various focal-lengths?

i wouldn't expect any softness from a leica-lens at 5.6 (that's more than 2.5 stops from maximal aperture, which i assume would be about 2.5 at 7.4 mm)

I am quite happy with the LX3 and the results quite please me.

It will suplement my D3 and M8 nicely even with it flaws. It is still the best I have found so far in my quest for the best P&S.

all I did was re-size for posting.

There is a little noise in the background but MUCH LESS that what my other P&S cameras produce. Even a small amount of noise control would help without smearing the details.

It is still early but I find the LX3 to be quite good for my purposes.

I could expect no better for the size sensor and in fact am quite pleased with the results. Given more time and I will master this little jewel and it will suit it purpose to a tee.

Thanks, Greg; your comments are very helpful! I can't wait to see what Leica is going to do with this camera. I am curious to see the Leica design and leica software! If they put a too high price, the Panasonic version looks good enough to me! :-))

Looking forward to see more shots,

Louis

If Leica does do it's own version, I hope they do not remove the small grip that is on the LX3. I am sure that Leica will put a premium price tag on it, how high depends on what is included. Besides the red dot you will get a longer warranty and likely the latest version of Elements.

I will take more images but we are in the tropical storm Fay mode now untill later this week or even the weekend! Not alot of danger but LOTS of rain, as much as 12"!
