Hi all.

My 12 year old daughter sprung an anterest in photography. Last year, she did this big report for school and used my old EOS 650 (broken) for a demonstration. Since then, she has continued to show a keen interest in it and is getting an SLR for her birthday. Since I have a D30, I want to get her an EOS so we can share lenses.

What would u guys recomend as an entry level EOS? (film of course, I wish I could afford to give her my D30 and get a D60 for myself :)

If budget is an issue what about a Rebel. These are nice SLRs that can use the same lenses and are relatively inexpensive. if she still shows an interest in a couple of years... well then reconsider the other alternatives. My kids are 11 and 8 and I really would have issue with them using my lenses. I think a PandS digital may be the way to go for them. It will assist in their computer skills and get them started. By the time they are adults, digital will predominate anyway. mark

I'd rather have a used EOS3 or 1n/v than a new Rebel or whatever. Check the Used departments at large retailers like B&H or Adorama. They always have "very good" or "excellent" condition used bodies. If you're not local (NYC), call them and ask for a 9, 9.5, or 10-graded body, and make sure the return policy is satisfactory.

Really, though, have you factored in the whole film/scan cost thing? It might be more cost-effective to just go for a used D30. Unless part of the whole school-thing involves developing film and whatnot....

You can get a kit with the camera and a lens for about 350.00. It
really is a great little camera.
I'll second that recommendation - it is an extremely competant camera at a good price. Plenty of options for use, from the full beginner modes right through to full manual. I still keep mine as a backup for my D30, although I have yet to need it - and hope I never will for that purpose ;-)

I suggested a Rebel in my earlier post. I agree that a used EOS 3 may be the way to go, a good conditioned camera will still cost more than the Rebel. Unless she is very advanced, the extra bells and whistles of that camera is probably not required for a 12 year old. However, the film cost issue is real and I think that you will need to have some limits on film usage. Mark

My first autofocus SLR was an EOS A2. It served me well. I just recently upgraded to a 1V for my film shooting. The sound of a motor drive advancing film between shots was like hearing an old friend's voice again. It had been a while since I used the A2, or film for that matter. ;-)

I'm sure you can find a deal on a nice used A2 and maybe some accessories. I had posted mine for sale on fredmiranda.com in the forums and had priced it for $350 shipped (continental US) including a like new 540EZ flash and a VG-10 portrait grip. I only had one guy that showed interest so I took the ad down. I guess I'll just keep it as a back-up. It's a great camera and it doesn't eat so I can afford to keep it. Kinda hated to see it go anyway. :-)

Good luck finding her a good starter camera. I wish her well.:-)

Buy used. Teens are so unpredictable that neither one of you know what she will want in a week. If she likes it and wants to continue the hobby/career, then make a big purchase for a used D30 or upgrade yourself.

It's what I got my dotter when she was 16, and two years later she still digs it. Hasn't bugged me for an upgrade yet Get the portrait/battery grip, too. At $35, it's not much more $$ than the proprietary battery, takes AA's, and it balances the small featherweight camera well. It's still a featherweight, even with the grip, but it handles and carries real nice. Canon doesn't make it easy to upgrade, but I really recommend the 50 over any cheapo kit zoom, especially if you don't already have one. It's a sharp little lens/camera.

I have a spare 620 body and lens if you would like to negotiate. I dont know what the rest of these folks think about the 620 but I think it is a super camera.

really would have issue with them using my lenses.
My kid never once has asked to borrow mine. No interest whatsoever. She just shoots the heck out of her 50mm. I gave her a 20-35 USM, and she hardly touches it. She's just a 'normal' girl, I guess. First thing she did is turn off the AF, and I don't think it's been back on since. Young eye...

Yeah, but then they won't be able to tell their Grandchildren 'I can actually remember shooting with film' 'Oh yeah?', they'll say, 'What was film?'

Stangely enough, nobody yet mentioned either Elan II or Elan 7. If money is not an issue EOS3 would be my first choice. However both Elan II and 7 are great cameras she could grow with - they have almost all features she might need, except for spot-metering (but D30&D60 don't have it either), and the built isn't too bad. Also keep in mind that (most likely) she will eventually have your D30. If she will have EOS3 from the very beginning, transition from EOS3 to D30 could be quite frustrating when it comes to AF speed.

Hi,

I have an EOS elan I have been planning to sell with two lenses. 35-85 4.5-5.6 USM and a 75-300 USM. Almost perfect condition. I have not used it since I went digital a few years ago. Email me if you are interested.

The Canon Rebel 2000 is a great little camera. I use it instead of my 1N for family and non professional outings. It focuses faster than a D30.

I fully agree with Mikhail.

EOS3 (or 1n used?) as a first option. One of the newer Elan 7(e) models second. And, yah, there will be frustration if she then moves to the D30.

Get a used Elan II or Elan IIe, or new Elan 7/7e. An absolutely great camera to learn on, and light enough for a 12 year old to not complain about carrying, yet it is extremely hard to out-grow.
