I have read lots about 450d focus issues but many of us are getting OK results from other than kit lenses without going to L- series expense.

I will add a couple of shots taken today.

photo 1 (a snapshot of my shooting mate after we had just fired off 1600 clicks at a school ball) 28-105mm f3.5-4.4 paid equivalent of $80US for it secondhand..and (2) 50mm f1.8 paid about $80new as well. I think the 50mm is good for short landscapes. Taken at my marina. (3) photoshopped (rather OTT) pano of Auckland harbour 50mm 1.8

..........is the 18-55 EFS Mk1 / MK2 and this is from the lens's worst end - 55mm OK, it's on a 400D (and one which can actually AF properly !!) but I think it's relevant - especially as it's also a very heavy crop (about 50%) .. yoiu can buy a BRAND NEW one of these (the MK2) in the UK for £30 and get a used one for half that so it has to rank the cheapest (apart from Free 35-80s which actually have a better Rep !!)

This was on my first outing with my new EOS450D kit, with the 18-55mm 'cheap' lense.

It looks better in 'RAW', I've resized it from that.

Better than my old (and so heavy EOS10D)

Adam, what was the exposure on this shot?

Nice, BTW.

XSi with kit 18-55mm IS at 49mm, handheld, 1/20 @ f5.6, ISO 1600 (RAW, DPP Brightness +.17 so effective ISO about 1900, no NR in DPP or otherwise).

to be honest, i'm having a front focus with my 450D + 50mm 1.8.

after send it for calibrated, it focus perfectly in my focus test chart, but not sure for a real life picture, will try it at my next portrait shooting soon.

160th sec at F10 (EXIF Data included) - the lens isn't up to much wideopen at 55mm and DOF was too shallow for this .
Nice, BTW.
Thanks

Those are very nice!

I don't own the 450D, but I do own some cheap lenses. I've bought my 350D with the kitlens but I don't have any shots with that lens in my gallery. I've replaced it with a sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 almost 3 years ago so I don't use it. It's a backup lens if my sigma should fail or has to be send in for calibration.

The 50mm f/1.8 II is a good portrait lens and can be (mis)used for many other types of shots.

I use my first 50mm 1.8 prime with it from my analog days, a Nikkor
lens. Front to front it makes a nice 1:1 lens for macro's

Some shots without the Nikkor attached:

--I dont know if you would call the 17-50 f2.8 Tamron cheap but in comparison to the Canon equivalent it is. Here is mine

All of these are taken with a 400D(Xti) and the kit 18-55mm (non is) or a Sigma lens kit from B&H I purchased for around $210 for both a 28-70mm f2.8-4 DG and a 70-300mm f4-5.6 DG macro(non APO) cheap lens kit....

As long as you get a good copy of your lens, it really isn't going to be so much a factor of your lens that makes a huge difference, but in how well you're able to use it, and your camera that is going to make all the difference. ;)

Several of these shots below would have been next to impossible for me just a few short years ago if I hadn't learned how to use my equipment properly. In other words, no amount of capital "L's" on any of my lenses would have helped me get many of these shots even close to being right straight out of the camera if I hadn't taken the time to learn the basic skills of photography.

These are in order from most expensive (cheap lens) to least expensive -

35mm f/2 (on 30D):

18-55mm non-IS kitty lens (on XT):

18-55mm non-IS kitty lens (on 30D):

50mm f/1.8 (thrifty fifty on XT):
