Am I the only one P*ssed *ff with Pentax and the K20D firware upgrade?

Like the hacked K10 firmware which re-loads over the latest version, can a version of K20 1.01 be hacked to write Pentax Corporation in the EXIF ? - where's that Russian guy who did the K10 :) ..

I agree the it would be a quick fix for Bibble but they have
basically said they don't care about Pentax and won't do anything
until their next version Bibble 5. With any luck capture one will be
faster.

Considering the reaction you got from bibble I'd really direct my wrath at them. Not releasing a small fix like this is plain ridiculous. You actually might be able to alter your copy of bibble yourself. If they simply used the maker string for identifying the RAW file, you just need to find where bibble stores this information, if you're lucky it's in some txt file. More likely it will be in a binary file, but you could use a hexeditor and replace "Pentax Corporation" with Pentax, don't know how difficult it is to find this though. Pretty stupid programming to use the full maker string though they could just use a regular expression.

Better hack the program. Otherwise once the program is updated you will not be able to read the old files maybe. You should be able to find the "PENTAX Corporation" string somewhere, probably a database file in the program directory. Might have to use a hex editor though.

Why would you not be comfortable doing this? Don't you ever change the exif of your images? (No tagging, captions ...?)

Instead of hacking firmware and so on, use exiftool to change maker in EXIF information.

jeffkroll already wrote how to do that:
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1036&message=28452803

Link to EXIFTOOL: http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/exiftool-7.34.zip

If you're familiar with commandline you figure it out how to do that in windows.

If you don't know what commandline is, use this tool together with exiftool:
http://freeweb.siol.net/hrastni3/foto/exif/exiftoolgui.htm

For Mac users there are utilities for batch operations with exiftool for Macs too. Check Related Utilities in this link:

I'd do it in a heartbeat if the license allowed me to do it and redistribute. Technically it's trivial, legally it's a world of hurt.

Because I have never done it before. And no I have never edited any exif stuff. Compared to most on this forum I am an old guy and would need step by step instructions. I guess if someone would walk me through it I would give it a try.

Hacking the Firmware OR the RAW converter is a one off Job - Hacking the PEFs has to be done with EVERY image and you'll soon get "hacked off" with that ..

exiftool works in a batch mode. Select all your K20D v1.01 PEFs and change "Maker" at once. You don't need to handle all files one by one.

Are you using Windows?

Its my camera and I can whine if I want to.

I am not the only person who is p*ssed about this problem so I will complain until
it is resolved.

I am amazed at the number of people who are happy to put up with this sh*t and say nothing

Open the firmware, open the converter and the problem would be fixed in a matter of hours. You are preaching to the choir.

Douglas,

No one here is 'putting up with it and saying nothing'. In fact you've been presented with plenty of information about what caused your problem and what you can do about it until either Pentax or your software manufacturer changes something.

I agree that if a problem cannot be solved or worked around, it'd be annoying. This is definitely not the case here.

What it also means: This forum is working wonderfully, helping users solve their problems, just like it should be. And no reason to resort to fecal langauge.

Regards
Victor

Bull Sh*t, Pentax PEF files worked fine in the original firmware
with Bibble and capture one. There is no way I know to roll back to
the old software so now I am screwed. As I mentioned before Pentax
has such a small market share so that fixing this problem is not a
priority with third party software makers.
If Bibble says they don't care about Pentax,, why have they included PEF files i teh first place???

I bought Bibble pro after a trial.
Sensible thing to do yes?

Problem was, than only after I had bought the proram that I had to process pics with some highlights... I really thought my camera was faulty so deleted that file until by chance I saw the same with images converted with the PPL .
No prob with PPPL bad highlights with Bibble...

IN the meantime I had foolishly deleted a wonderfull file becaue of misinterpretation of the Bibble result.....
I prefer Lightroom....

Have not upgraded, have used 2 sec timer and no probs (except for the fact that the timer shots were all without lightningstrikes which i was shooting, or trying to, at the time)

So I gave up on Bibble especially after a Bibble upgrade when the workflow started doing very weird things.... Bibble waste of money
