There are two ways to prevent the flash from firing:

1) If you are using Auto or one of the Vari-program modes

Press the flash button (on the side near the lens mount) and rotate the command wheel until you get the little flash symbol with a line through it.

2) If you are using one of the P, S, A or M modes then just push the flash down and it should not pop up again.

The reason I asked... well last night myself and others were out shooting in the rain. Well i was shooting w/ the d80 and my sb800 and was getting flash return from the 800 and the rain drops. A guy next to me had the d300 and was shooting with no flash and in he said he was in full auto. H esaid he could go into his menu setting and turn off the pop up flash. He said the d80 would do the same thing but I can not find it in the menu settings.

I knew I could use the other setting such as A, S & M.

Sorry I ddint mean to ask such a stupid question. Just didnt know if there was a setting in the menu like the guy said.... SORRY

I thought the difference between the "Auto" and "P" mode was simply that the flash would pop up when needed in the "Auto" mode. On my D70s, the pop up flash will not come up on it's own in "P" mode.

This may be different in other models, but I doubt it.

Well, the D300 doesn't have an "Auto" mode. Just PSAM. There is a menu option for flash control. The D80 and D300 can act as masters in the Nikon CLS system. There is a menu option to control the output of the pop up flash, and it can be set to off (and still provide the preflashes to control the off-camera SB-600s and SB-800s you own). Perhaps that's what your freind was refering to.

Don't let rude people ruffle your feathers. :-)

Warmest regards,

A guy next to me had the d300 and was shooting with no flash and
in he said he was in full auto.
As others have said, that can't be true simply since the D300 has no Auto setting similar to the one on the D80.
He said he could go into his menu setting and turn
off the pop up flash. He said the d80 would do the same thing but I
can not find it in the menu settings.
IIRC, there's an option to set the custom button to do this for you. Not for good, but at least as long as you hold it in. Don't know if it works in Auto mode, but you should try it.

Your gear list would be more impressive if you knew how to use it. Read the manual.

Mt reply last night was a bit short, both in length and information. I don't have the D80 and I'm not familiar with all of the settings, but this morning I did a little more research on your question; on pages 40, 41, and 42 of the manual I found the answer to your question.

If you are shooting in the Auto, Portrait, Close-up, or Night Portrait modes you can press and hold the Flash Button and rotate the Command Dial (that is the one on the rear of the camera) and select the flash mode you want using the icons that will appear in the Control Panel (the LCD on the top of the camera); one of those icons is a lightning bolt within a circle with a diagonal line running through it, i.e. NO FLASH. In the other modes just don't raise the flash.

you could also :

1) Use a cellophane tape to prevent it from opening

2) Use your thumb to hold it down each time

3) drastic action : break it off since u would soon be getting a SB600 :D

Sorry, I don't have anything nice to say but it needs to be said. Please don't put lists of camera gear in your signature. It poisons the search function - i.e. when someone searches for information on the Sigma 28-300 they don't want to read every one of your posts to find that there isn't anything of value there.

Otherwise, have a nice day. Shoot some pics.

You can always include it in your profile text. Many do, for just this reason (to avoid having it in their signatures, that is).

No , the search engine ignores everything after the "--" just above the signature.
