Since the K100d has a plug dedicated to it, I assume there are wired remote releases available, but..... has anyone ever used something other then a Pentax accessory for this purpose? I'm interested in making my own, but if some generic cable release will do the trick, why bother? I'd like something longer than the usual 15 feet, though.

15 feet is very far for a cable release. Did you mean 1.5 feet? Anyway, you can buy these manufactured cheaper than you can make them. I bought a 2 foot unit for $7 delivered on ebay.

It uses the same remote wiring as the Canon, so that makes things a bit easier.

I bought the Pentax remote, and ended up getting a 2.5mm jack extension cable off of ebay for when I want to do things like self portraits.

This camera uses the same cable as the Canon Digital Rebel series, and generic releases are available for a few bucks. You can make it as long as you like by using a mini plug extension cable, available at audio/video stores or Radio Shack. The extension cable has a female stereo mini plug at one end and a male stereo mini plug at the other end. The Pentax remote release cable for the SF-1 cameras can be modified to fit the DSLR cameras by splicing a miniplug onto it.

If you're going to make your own, there's nothing special about the wiring. The shank of the plug is common (to both switches), the ring is the "half way down" position of the shutter, where the focus is initiated. The tip is the actual shutter.

Thus, it would be very easy to cobb one up, but the double action pushbutton (if that's necessary) is what's difficult. That is, you could use two switches, but it's hard to say what would happen if they were pushed out of sequence.

I frankly don't know why they didn't make it wireless using a cheap RF fob. Heck, the circuitry wouldn't cost much more than the connector.

All that happens if you push the switches out of sync is it fill fire with out focusing, which is kinda useful for somethings
