I've had my Pro1 for 3+ yrs now and over those years, I think I tried shooting in RAW for a day before going back to JPG b/c of the extra work required in processing/viewing raw files and the larger RAW file sizes.

I was just wondering how many people who have the ability to shoot in RAW format do and how many don't.

For those who do, do you find your pics that much better than if you were just to shoot in JPG?

ability to do so. Just so much more leeway in being able to handle files - especially if the lighting was not as good as expected.

As always - good shooting....

Ben

After 3 weeks doing battle with RAW I switched to jpeg today... Uprating my RAM tomorrow, then buying software...it's all a bit tedious and makes me fancy an sd950 instead of my G9.... I'll go through with it though, and after learning the software will shoot RAW for portrait work (A2 enlargements mostly) and any once in a lifetime shots. Who knows, I may get into it... I think it's a bit limited on these little cams though...

Cameras don't shoot people...

Pro1, with G2 and G3 before that, and 450D on the way. Almost always shoot RAW because I don't know until after the fact when I need it. When I do need it, it's because of problems with white balance, exposure, oversharpening on some subjects, etc.

Simon;

I always shoot raw + jpeg if the camera allows it. I Photoshop every file before printing and/or saving. Keepers from jpeg only camera files are always duplicated and saved as tiffs as the jpegs are lossies (untill I burn them to CDs or DVDs of course).

The raws work better in Photo Shop. The jpegs from one of my cameras are just plain lousy compared to what I can get from the raw file. I only use the jpgs for editing and quick viewing on "preview"- (MAC).

I won't buy any more cameras that don't shoot raw. My newest is the Canon G9 and the p&s it is replacing is now the lowly glove compartment camera.

99.999999% RAW in all cameras that have the facility.

I prefer to decide what happens to and image based on individual requires rather than a one size firs all approach.

My default RAW converter is BreezeBrowser which I use to select and convert as many at a time as can use the same conversion settings, converting to 16-bit TIFF files. Then crop and any other adjustment in Photoshop. Finally downsizing and converting to jpg back in BreezeBrowser (or Photoshop if I want more control over the final sharpening). If I'm creating a web presentation, I'll do that in BreezeBrowser ("HTML") instead of only resizing and creating jpg ("Proof"). If I'm trying for the most detail I can get from an image, I'll use another RAW converter like RawTherapee.
Those of you who shoot RAW only, what workflow do you follow to get
jpegs when you have many pictures?

Same here.

Not many it would seem, but those who do are pretty committed.
For those who do, do you find your pics that much better than if you
were just to shoot in JPG?
That'd be a 'Yes' then. I guess it's like home cooking, better if you're good at it, but I'm enjoying the ease of jpeg dining.

I didn't hit preview, so I didn't realize I'd messed up the quoting system. Every day's a school day!

One of the main reasons I got a G9 was that it has raw, and it is supported in Lightroom. It allows my workflow to be the same regardless of the camera, going all the way back to raw images shot with my Oly E-10.

then it's jpeg only since that's how it's setup in the camera. ;)

And I am now the proud owner of the A650, with Allbest's CHDK hack, and can shoot in RAW with it as well.

Once I picked up the 4 Gig CF card, that's the only way I shoot now. Have done comparison of identical shots between RAW and JPEG and found my preference is for the options RAW provides.
