Michael, a sure fire way to get noticed here is to go to a park and take some pictures of tame squirrels :-) Someone could bust there butt walking through the mountains of a South American rain forest to get a once in a lifetime photo of a rare (and wild) animal but that squirrel in the park is what they want to see here,go figure... ......

Very well put Ricky! I never was very good with words and sometimes my mouth gets overloaded when the heat starts turning my neck red. I have absolutely nothing against anyone in this forum. I may enjoy some more than others but I'm sure we all do.

Thank you for the words of encouragement. I've accepted everything and even though I'd like to hang around a few more years I'm prepared. I'm at total peace with myself and to me thats all that matters. (As long as I have my trusty C2100UZ & Computer to help maintain my sanity)

I totally agree with everything that everyone has said on both sides of this discussion and those who stayed in the middle. That is why this is a forum and why it works. If he followed his own logic, Michael would have never posted his subject ... but he obviously sensed and knew that this is ... in fact ... and in every sense of the word ... a FORUM. It melds and morphs and adapts to meet the needs of the individuals ... of the majority and of the minority. The members are not a finite group of camera models but are an almost infinite amalgamation of differing individuals with different tastes, abilities, interests and personalities. If we were all the same, there would only be the need for one of us and that would get pretty boring.

I want to personally welcome Michael and invite him to stay. I like his style. He says what he has to say. He has found a way to introduce himself and become known. If you don't speak up ... if you don't raise your hand ... you don't get called on. I look forward to seeing Michael's photos and to helping him in any way that I can. Like all of us, he will have his own style and will contribute to all of our growth. I'll look for your pictures now that I know who you are. Again ... WELCOME.

Do you have any good recipes for potato salad?

As a recent user, I would like to add my comments to this thread.

There are currently 20 postings in this thread (will probably be higher by the time I finish vbg)... 11 of these posts have the exact same wording in the subject line. It takes a long time to open each post if you are using a DIAL-UP connection. It does become a little frustrating when you are REQUIRED to open the message to see if it is something that you are interested in reading.

For example: A photo is posted for comments. If you are going to reply that is a 'great shot', then use the subject line to express your feedback. A simple NT will tell others that there is no additional text in the message. If you are going to make additional comments, provide a brief description in the subject line.

Please avoid subjects that are vague, i.e., "Guess what I did!" Tell us what you did so that we only open the message if we are interested.

The subject line is the way that we can choose whether or not to become involved in the 'personal' postings. This might be a possible solution to some of these expressed opinions.

Please: CHANGE THE SUBJECT LINES FOR YOUR REPLIES. It's the courteous thing to do. (Use NT if the subject line says it all)

BTW, I really like this forum and have had excellent responses from its members. Thanks for the help.

I guess this was directed towards me. I didn't think I could convey what I did in 5 or 6 words in the subject line so I didn't try.

on-the-fly and trying to think about things that 'slow down' my browsing on the forum. One of these days, I will spring for either a cable of dsl connection. I think that these forums are so popular that they can be a little slower to downloads at times.

Also, this forum moves so quickly that it is difficult to keep up with messages that interest you. That's also what makes it so good.

Hi Michael,

To a great extent this just seems to be "the way of forums", but partiucularly with photography I think it's a necessary part.

I manage several forums and have to say that the ones which veer off-topic into the realms of "Real Life" are the successful ones. The ones that are still going strong 6 years after I started them. Those that stick strictly to the point never seem to have that sense of community which makes people want to join in. When we first join a fourm it is often because we are "beginners" - having asked our initial questions, unless there is a bit of off-topic stuff which we can relate to it's often difficult to contribute further while we digest what we've learnt and become able to help newer new-comers :-) If a forum is designed purely to answer tech. questions or whatever that is fine... except, eventually all the knowledgeable people will tire of answering the sames questions over and over and leave... :-/

Photography is an art, and therefore emotive. When we see a painting or read a poem we tend to want to know about the artist/poet - hence the thousands of biographies on the market! For me, it's the same with photography, I see a great photo and think, "what kind of person took that?" and reading their off-topic posts gives me a feeling of that - more than simply reading their profile could.

I feel that this forum has a good balance between technical advice, personal opinion, encouragement and off-topic posts and though I post relatively rarely - and probably more off-topic than on, I'm still at the digesting stage :-) - I find it a good place to be and I've learnt a lot!

I read your post twice and thought it made a great deal of sense. I'm glad you feel the way you do and have this opinion of the forum. You have hit the nail on the head regarding the necessity of OT stuff to keep the forums interesting for those who have been here for a while. I have never participated in a forum that I enjoy so much as this one, and I do belong to a few.

Thanks for sharing these sentiments and opinions. I'm glad you have found a place for yourself here.

That's the best reason I ever heard of for owning and playing with these toys. I'm glad you have found peace with yourself and I hope it will last a lot longer then you anticipate. Also that the peace you found will follow you wherever you go.

The humor and interjections mixed in with tips and tricks is really a good blend. What a cranky pants you are. Go take a nap. You need one. Then, go to Barnes and Noble and buy a few books on photography, since you really are not partisan to the 'social interaction' part of a forum. Oh, and for the record, your post WAS rude and ugly. There is always someone who wants to spit in the punch, I swear. This time, it's YOU. This forum is educational, funny and interesting. Your post wreaks of sour grapes. Your disposition is not our fault. You said you've been visiting this forum for weeks. Why?

Willa,he's just voicing his opinion and I think he has some interesting points and I stand behind his right to make it. His thoughts were just another "interjection" Besides the person you said he was rude to said "I totally agree" Calm down and let a person express what's on his mind. What do you think this is a college campus ? where if your not PC people try to shut you up :-)

well I stand behind Michael original comments even though he's gone soft. A lot of you have liken this forum to a community. When's the last time you were at some sort of a community meeting and someone stood up and said "I've been sober for a week" You want this forum to be like a Jenny Jones show ? Does all of are failing and vice's have to be disgusted in public,isn't there such a thing as "good taste" that we try to strive for ?
