What is the best printer for home use? I'm sick and tired of my HP P1000.
Thanks Darius

You can't do much better than the Epson 1280. It produces really sharp beautiful pictures with reasonable longevity. It also gives you the option to make panoramas and tabloid size prints. If you don't need the large sizes, either the smaller Epson or the equivalent Canon do a really good job.

Agreed. The Epson has pretty much been the standard for a while now. If i were you, though, i'd read up on the new Canon, which now may be equal or superiour.

If, though, you want the option of using quadtone ink packages, you should make sure whichever printer you choose is supported first.

I have an Epson 785EPX and I love it. Got it at circuit city for $200 because I was in a pinch and needed it immediately, no regrets though. It uses the same print heads as the 1280, the only difference is the paper size. If you're only printing up to 8x10 you can' go wrong with this printer. Plus the color cartridges are only $20. Can't beat that!

One note though, only use Epson papers, I found that Kodak papers do very strange things to the colors.

I am using the new HP 1700 printer. Up to 13x19, 4 separate ink cartriges (remote from printing head), duplexing module and Post script available.
So far very satisfied with output - markedly superior to my old HP 952.

HP has always been a better value on ink usage, though I haven't gotten a feel for this paricular model.

In all, a great photo/business printer

TyDo, there are lots of other papers that work really well with the Epsons. For a nice gloss (but not particularly 'archival'), try Office Depot Premium Gloss. Try Ilford Galerie Pearl and a number of Red River papers (I like their premium matte and Denali matte). Kodak doesn't do very well, but lots of others do, so don't feel you are only limited to Epson papers.

B/W lover, but color is seducing me

I have to put in my vote for the Canon S900/9000 series. They're quiet, fast (1 minute to print an 8x10), and produce BEAUTIFUL prints. The carts can be found online for $10-$11. Emscomputing.com had the S9000 in stock last week for $428. I believe the S900 was around $370.

They work well with Canon and JetPhoto papers. Kodak papers produce some truly awful results.

I've been very pleased with the output from my 1280, but for selling prints I'd really like the security of archival quality.

Also, I've had very good luck with Kodak Ultima Satin using the colorlife 2880 ICC profile. If anybody is interested, I can post the whole settings schmear for the 1280 (should also with the 1270, 1290, and 870)

Again, if you can wait, hold out for archival and save the HP for business, web page printing, etc. Epson's are terrific photo printers, but I still lean to HP for everyday business use.

Wait for the new Epson 2100/2200, supposed to be available in July
or perhaps late June.

Hi Darius;

I just bought the Canon S900 and I'm truely blown away at the quality of the prints, 4x6, 5x7, 8x10...all are great. I had been using an older HP 970cse which had nowhere near the clarity & quality of this beaut. I use Qimage Pro to print my photos, which helps a lot, too.....

Darius,

I have an Epson 1280 which I love...but if I were to do it again I would take a look at the latest from Epson, the Epson 2200. I think it will raise the bar for the best home printer for some time.

Here's the new release announcement at:

Take a deep look at the upcomming epson 2200 (In europe 2100)

I use the 2000P. Gives you long live colours on variousd papers. The 2000 Model had a but dull colours and needed a good tweeking to work. But what came out pleased me well!

The new version claims to have pigmented colours as s tron as dey colors! And thet will make this printer near perfect.

Hi Darius, seriously check out the Epson Stylus Photo 820 it is 6 color, 2880 dpi and it's $99.00 I am very critical of my work and very pleased with the results of my 8x10s. However I am looking forward to the new Epson 2200 for larger format.

I bought a Canon S750 $200 WOW I love it, fast, incredible pictures, individual ink tanks, replaceable print heads. It blows away my canon 5100, so badly its like 10 to 1.

TyDo... I have a question. have you compared the quality of the 785 with the 1280? I have the 780, which is suppose to have the same heads as the 1280 as well. I was wondering if the quality of the 1280 is actually the same. The prints from the 1280 seem to look better to me. I was considering the 1280 because of the print size, but is the quality better?
Thanks for the input.

I have compared the 785EPX to a friends 1280, at 8x10 300 dpi and 1440 printer res I can't see a difference with a loupe. So paper size is really the only factor IMHO.
