It's been a while since I have seen any food pictures. Let's play a game...

Critique my photo and then show me one of your best food shots and explain your technique, no matter how simple.

Brazilian Rice & Beans w/ Rib-Eye Steak. It's what I ate for dinner. :D

This meal looked so delicious, I just HAD to photograph it!

Shot was taken with SB-800 speedlight on camera pointing straight up and set as Master in CLS mode, with -1 ev flash comp for fill-flash. Secondary SB-600 speedlight setup with modifier to diffuse flash, with +1 ev flash comp. SB-600 was setup on a stand, to the immediate right of the plate about 12 inches away and 7 inches above, pointed downwards directly at the plate at 40 degree angle.

So, what do you think? :)

I don't know a lot about food photography (or photography, for that matter), but I read a lot of cookbooks with colourful pictures! :) I really like your setup, and I love the lighting. The only thing that disturbs me a bit is the food itself. But that is highly personal. I didn't get that yummy feeling when I looked at it. I am sure it was yummy, and I am don't want to offend the person who cooked it!

Maybe there was just too much on the plate? Just an idea...

Love your placemats, btw. :)

Looks yummy to me! Maybe just a tad too rare.

Mine is dinner at The Orleans buffet in Las Vegas. Although the crawdads were too much work to get such a little bit of meat... but they sure were fun to play with!

This is a good food photo. The lighting is critical to make foods stand out and I think your flash setup worked well. But I have two suggestions.

The first one is the plate seems to be too small as compared to the entire portion of the foods and if I'm gonna just eat them ,then I don't care but for a food photo, each food needs some breathing space between foods. Because the plate is small,Brazilian Rice & Beans and Rib-Eye Steak compete with each other, screaming with each other. :) Separate them with a leaf or some slices of orange or something would give a balanced definition of each food on the plate.

Well, that's my thought on the food photo but I really want to know how you liked the foods. Did you enjoy them? I bet you did. :)

LOL... I think there was too much. The plate itself was only about 8 inches in diameter... there was only 1/2 of a rib-eye there... so I guess the plate was too small for the portion. OR was I eating a lumberjack's portion.. :)

Thanks Karin!

Rare is the only way to eat it! LOL...

Nice connie! I've never had those to eat before... but I had 2 as pets! :)

I think you hit the nail right on the head. The plate was small... only 8 inches in diameter.

Yeah... I was hungry and devoured the whole thing! :D

hmmm-

I like it! Different perspective, the straight above, hovering over, about to dig-in!
Colors are excellent!
Thanks for shooting and sharing!

. . . shoot like there's no film in the thing!

Just for fun, here's my offering....a selection of afternoon tea cakes!

They look good enough to eat and would go well with a cup of tea, but I wouldn't recommend it!!

They were hand knitted by my good lady for our grandchildren to play with....

To me the food looks delicious. In Texas, black beans and rice are common side dishes as are hearty cuts of meat. The problem I have with the photo is that the place setting does not complement the dish. The meal is a hearty, rustic type and the place setting is delicate looking - pastel color, floral.

the photo is very good, but the food looks delicious, I'm off to lunch. I'll have beans for lunch at home, we use here a light-brown variety. The black one is used for feijoada, the dish with pork stuff which is synonimous to Brazilian food for many.

Good appetite to all!

MMMM..looks delicious! Wish I was invited over for dinner!

The picture has alot of shadows, but I don't have any experience in this type of shooting. Maybe some more light from different areas???? Anyway, it does not take anything away from the "appeal" of the dish.

I like the results of your set up but agree that the place setting doesn't go with the meal and the plate is definately too small, to hold what I would eat or is that an appitizer? Thanks for sharing, time for lunch!!!

Shoot everything, Delete the bad ones!

I'll have to look and see if I have any to post when I get home. In the meantime, I like the shot, but, you've got reversed order for knife and fork ;)

I admire your photography, and this is another fine photograph. I love food, too, and wish I would have been able to sample this dish because it looks delicious.

You have commented on some pics I have posted, so you know my technique is still being developed. But for the sake of a good food thread here is a picture of some boiled crawfish still soaking up spices. Taken outdoors in a bit of a point-and-shoot fashion with a Sigma 18-200 @ 26mm, f/4.2, 1/60.
