NYC: Old Diners & Eateries

Hi Dez, interesting subject and good images.

May I offer a suggestion: I think you could use a more uniform
"style". Like if you were planning for an exhibition or a book on the
subject. I like some of these more than others but that's beside the
point to me. It's like some were taken by one person and another by
another person.

I know this is a tough thing, but it's like developing a more
identifiable style. Maybe you don't care about that, but since I see
you like to portray NY's many aspects, and probably at some point go
for an exhibition or else, what about thinking about that?

One guy here that has some style is Glenn Nagel (gnagel). Most of his
images are clearly identifiable (the colorful undersaturated small
buildings and small details).

I'm far from it, stil learning to use the D80 and digital PPing.

Well, just my 2 cents worth of thoughts here.
I hear what you're saying. Only one person taking them here ;)

I don't want to lock myself to one style. I like to do a variety of things. That's my persona. If anything, people most associate me to "NYC Streets", which is what I like to do.

Morris & Tech1961 are the "Bird Men" and Leung and RFC are the "Pano Guys", which I like to do as well.

Thanks for the comments.

Cool work Dez.

In the first shot, you handled the high contract situation
exceptionally well. Number three got beautiful rhythm and therefore
is my favourite. Well done!

Dez, I’m thinking of going for D300 and believe you are the best to
seek advice on this.

Does it have more Dynamic range than D80? If so how many F Stops?

How did you find its high ISO performance?

Do you think its “Focus Tracking by Colour, Scene Recognition” is
useful for bird (BIF) photography?

What all you bought with this camera.. remote or cable release?

Many thanks,
Dileep
Thanks Dildeep. You could pose the same question to gnagel and diegonyc. They also have the D300.

I am happier with IQ out of the D300, especially since I have my D300's highly customizable settings, set correctly. With that and using Capture NX 1.3 during conversion, I find that NX will take your in-camera settings and produce the best possible image during conversion. I than use PhotoShop to PP. So in general, my workflow has improved.

My photos seem to "pop" more because my NX conversions and CS3 post-processing is better than before.

ISO performance is great, especially at the high end. I've used ISO 3200 and have gotten excellent results.

Focus Tracking by Colour, Scene Recognition” really works. You can AF on BIF, running dogs, moving cars.....etc. I don't use this feature often, but when i did, it clearly worked.

I purchased the Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8 lens and a Nikon MC-36 Remote to get even sharper photos using Mirror Up and a tripod.

Well, that’s not entirely accurate now is it... ;-}

Another one of our coincidences Shaun, come on. Being NYers, we're bound to hit the usual suspects ;)

I found this diner by accident. Same day I got all the other Williamsburg shots a few weeks ago while traveling on Wythe. It was done on a Saturday morning run.

It's a noble effort, to be sure! I live in Astoria and it's about a 20-minute walk to the Jackson Hole, so I try to go there at least once a month. Some of these places in your gallery look tasty, too.

Dear Dez,

Many thanks for your advice.

Now I need to know about the Dynamic Range of this body before I decide.

May be I need to put a thread here later.

Best regards,
Dileep

Please do me a favor and don't get locked into a style like I see a few people saying. You do have a style, it's a shoot NYC streets to the best of your ability to show just how great and diversified the city is. Can you imagine just shooting say doors, my God I'd shoot myself. I my humble opinion you are doing just fine and better the most, have a great shooting day, Ken

Great shots! Reminds me of Micky's Diner that appeared on the front cover of Alexander O' Neals first album... it's not is it???

Never assume the next man has intelligence equal to yours. He may have more.

I only go for breakfast -- the burgers are bigger than my head!

The waffles, pancakes, and omelettes are pretty amazing...

I now go to the diner on Kings Highway near Ocean Parkway called "The
Mirage". Can't seem to get enough breakfast food. :)
Two and three look like the old dinner that was on Coney Island Ave
and Avenue U in Brooklyn. Thanks for the memories.

My wife comes from Ave. S and East 19th St. We used to go there with
my in-laws. I haven't been there in at least 10 years. NJ dinners
are good but not as good.
NJ diners?? I wouldn't go to one... except, I hear they have great 50s theme diners... where they have the girls in shorts and roller skates and brings the food to your car window. :D

Dez:

You may have posted this earlier --but can you share your D300 settings that have provided your fine results going into Capture?

You definitely need to get that "Streets of NYC" book going.

I love looking old diners and have taken a bunch of photos of them

you have a nice mix of old diners and some old Lunchenettes. One of those diners is pretty small. I also like the one of SCHMOOKS PIZZA the lady sitting at the window and the bike on the right side. That old Lunchenette ( Park Lunchenette ) looks like the one they used in the FRENCH CONNECTION with Tony LoBianco and his wife working there as a front. If you want to see a real small diner drive down into Mineola on Jericho turnpike one day and look on your left and you will see the smallest diner on the Island. Sorry dez I forgot to mention the diner all the motorcycles out front and you converted it it into black and white and think it has more impact in black and white than the one in color.

Forgot to mention... when I saw the title, I was hoping you got the Moondance diner before they moved it to Utah.

That one was on Spiderman the movie.... but now the landmark is gone. :(

Thanks Peter.

The D300 has the ability to install downloadable Picture Controls (D2X Mode 1, 2 and 3) off Nikon's site. Or you could create your own Picture Controls with custom curves, using NX.

For outdoors, I like to use the D2X Mode 3 Picture Control and shoot in raw. I than batch convert with Capture NX 1.3, my NEF files to JPEG at highest quality.

All my post-processing (Levels, Perspective and Lens correction adjustments) is done using PhotoShop CS3. Hope this helps.

Don't worry, I won't ;)

If you look at my profile, you'll see that I have 3 jobs. I don't sit still and like to do different things.

Thanks a bundle Ken.

Thanks Lowell. The one is color was actually shot by Shaun on a different day.

:(
You know what, I never did. I actually shot it once while driving by but the photo came out like cr_p, so I deleted it :(

The old Moondance Diner on 10th Avenue was a classic. If any of you have it, feel free to post it!
