Here we go - D3 with 70-200mm VR lens - mixed lightning - daylight and artificial light.

iso 2000; 1/500s

AF has been dead on (21 dynamic used), AWB for most of pics ok...but
a bit to "yellowish"...but no problem as NEF has been used, processed through
Capture NX - settings have been vivid, so just resized for web, no additional
sharpening, no additonal anti-noise software.

kind regards,

These are nice and in focus. It looks like you still need to adjust the WB though. I understand the problem with gyms and the WB having shot a lot of basketball with this combo.

I've shot indoor volleyball with a Canon 1DsMII at ISO 3200 and got (expectedly) grainy results. Have now got a D3 and have used it for some gym basketball at 6400 with much cleaner images. Keep up the good work

As written - mixed lightning...so - there really has been a huge gap depending where I did take the picture...midfield or at the net...but I would say its a good compromise how it came out...

And don't forget the power of the D3 AF-tracking!

I tried to shoot volleyball with my D3 and 200-400 f/4 VR yesterday, really just to see if I could do it. I found that the lens was really too heavy and bulky to catch those few "special moments" that make a good shot, and I had to be up at ISO 6400 to even have a chance.

You say that 21-point dynamic worked well for you. Did you use the release+focus priority setting?
Thanks.

Greetings!
Very nice shots. I'm surprised that there was still motion blur
showing at 1/500s...
Would have been less with the 4MP D2H(s)...12MP does have
more motion blur at same shutterspeed...besides that - the girls
here are "fighting" in a tournament to advance to the second highest
league in the country...so, when they smash the ball it IS fast.

Hi Zuman!

Iso 6400 IS an option with the D3 - already used that too for indoor Volleyball,

but the 200-400mm lens IS to bulky...better the 70-200mm VR or the 120-300mm f2.8 Sigma.
You say that 21-point dynamic worked well for you. Did you use the
release+focus priority setting?
I am not 100% sure what you mean by that...21point dynamic AF in continous mode used and AF point selection has not been locked.

Let me know if I understood what you meant...

Good Morning!
I'm not sure about "dead on focus" in these images. Did you focus on
the net or the faces or what ever is closest subject?
Main "target" has been the girls in black...cause I do know them...
