Well, i just got my D30 today and decided to upgrade the firmware. I made sure my camera's SN was in the range and followed the instructions. Everything went fine and got to the "Firmware upgraded successfully" message and when I pressed Ok, the screen went black. Nothing would respond and I had to take out the battery. Now, nothing is working. I turn it on and get nothing.

What do i do?

Don't tell me I have to send this in to Canon after having it for 4 hours!!!!

Jeff

Try taking out both batteries.

I only have one battery... unless you mean a smaller battery that stores the memory... if so where is that one?

Yes, there's a small battery on the bottom. Opens with a coin.

Yes, the memory backup battery. It's a small coin cell, and it's kept under that round twisty-thing on the bottom of the body next to the threaded tripod-mounting hole. Unscrew it and leave both batteries out for a while (while a minute or two should do, I'd wait 10 or so just to be sure it's dead). Put it back in, put the main battery back in, and hope for the best. Otherwise, chances are the upgrade hozed the flash that stores the firmware, and back to Canon it goes.

While I don't know if this will do it or not, it's better than sending it back to Canon so soon - you haven't even gotten to have any fun with it yet!

Hi,

Why did you run the upgrade?
I still have version 1,0 and it works without any errors till now.

Good luck,

Well, I got to play with my D30 for 4 whole hours... of course 1 hour of that was waiting for the battery to charge... Wooohooo!!! Now its on the way back. Oh well, my other lens and goodies aren't going to be here until Friday anyway.

Well, I got one test shot with it at least:

Never doing a firmware upgrade again!!!!!!

Before you ship it off to Canon, try one more thing. You may have a bad or poorly charged battery. Put the ac adapter in and try to operate the camera from ac instead of the battery. worth a try.

Even the dog doesn't seem too HAPPY

GOOD LUCK WITH D30

Brian

Well he either knew what was going to happen or he was sick of me trying to get him to stay in one place while taking a few dozen photos of him. I think it was both... he knew and just wanted to get a break from getting his picture taken :-)

Yeah, I tried that too with no luck :-(

Thanks for the suggestion though.

isn't that kind of irrelivant. Shouldn't I be able to upgrade my firmware without worrying if it will render my camera useless?

What if there was an update I deemed very important. Am i supposed to skip it because it might mean sending my camera back to the factory for 3 weeks while they fix their problem?

This was a stupid thing to do since I didn't really need anything that the upgrade was providing. But after reading a couple posts here suggesting to go to the latest firmware I decided to go for it anyway.

The point is, this shouldn't have happened.

Don't beat yourself up over it. You did the correct thing in upgrading the firmware.

My opinion is that the upgrade uncovered some hardware problem, that you probably would have had to deal with eventually anyway, so you are better off getting it over with now. Don't be afraid to upgrade the firmware, it's the right thing to do.

Maybe this is an obvious thing to do, but then again, maybe not.

Have you tried going through the upgrade procedure again? If so, did it try to laod the firmware and then end up with the same problem?

The camera would not turn on at all, it was completely dead.

Even with the firmware put back on the MD/CF card? If it sees the firmware on the MD/CF it goes into a different boot routine so that it can load the firmware. If you've not tried this yet it may be worth a go.

Jay-Comment and Question-

Comment-you may have not had an adequately charged battery The instructions are very adament about using the AC adapter for firmware updates.

Question-From what version to what version? If you had the earliest version in camera, and tried to go to latest version, there may have been an interim version necessary. Seems like when I got mine it had v 1.1 and when I updated to 1.2 the instructions said not to go from 1.0 to 1.2 without first updating 1.0 to 1.1.

Hmm, well, does the upgrade delete the firmware off the CF card? If so then no i didn't try that. I can't try it now since its on a FedEx truck right now :-(

But, if the procedure doesn't delete the firmware file, then i did have the CF card in while trying to turn it on. There was no activity of any type whatsoever.

Thanks,
Jeff
