Please check out my first attempt at night shots... http://www.pbase.com/igotjump/parthenon

I took these tonight using a tripod and remote. WOW - I hardly consider myself even an amateur so anything good is because of the camera. I was extremely pleased with the 707's performance at night. Comments very welcome and appreciated.

Oh..btw.. this is the Parthenon replica in Nashville. It's HUGE !!!

Hi Hockey Dave Nice job on the night shots. If it weren't for the driveway/parking lot it would look like the real Parthenon! The lighting is nice - I'm assuming there are some kind of spotlights on the building?

i haven't tried many night pictures with my 707 yet (too busy taking pictures of the kids!) However, your enthusiasm has got me thinking!!

Thanks !! Yeah there is a lot of light so it is kinda "cheating" but it makes for a cool effect, I think. Yeah.. good call on the driveway - I should have cropped. I was so excited that I rushed and didnt pay attention to as much detail. If I'm not mistaken that building we have is an exact replica. There is a HUGE Athena sculpture inside from floor to ceiling - its massive.

Nice shots. I try to spend dome time at the Parthenon whenever I'm in Nashville. It looks like they finished the restoration since I last saw it. I've never seen it at night - it looks less 'real' by day. thanks for the memory.

And I have to ask - was that the Sony flash you used?? haha

Hi Hockeydave,

Nice pictures. I particularly liked the third one. Cropping would make it look better I think.

Can anyone suggest how to get the 'backward lean' out of the shots. I remember reading about that. Not sure if its caused by a wide angle angle focal point but thought there was a way to minimize that effect.

Again I read about it somewhere but am unable to recall.....

Good images, I would personally try to PS the lights (on the floor) on the 3rd shot, it is the best IMO

What's up, Dave?

'Nice to see a fellow Middle Tennesseean around here. I was thinking of taking some shots of the Parthenon, myself. Yours are very nice, by the way. I'd also like to get a couple of night shots of Adelphia with downtown serving as a backdrop. I'm in the 'boro, so it's not a bad drive. If the rain ever stops falling, I'll give it a shot... sigh

Hey Shim ! Yeah it is cool to "see" someone in the area bangin around in this forum. Actually I think I remember seeing a post from you about your camera and that you bought it at the Sears in the 'boro. If you do head to the Park go around and take a shot of the other entrance of the Parth - the one i didnt get. It is much more level and would make a little better shot than my frontal one. It's well lit so it's good to work with. This was my first at night altogether but I plan to take many more. I plan to do the downtown shot as well. Nashvegas has a pretty cool night view now so it could be interesting. I too am waiting for some better weather !
Thanks for checkin out my pics !

Yeah..I used the HVL100000000000 - the thing is shaped like a cannon. I pull it behind my car in its own Sony trailer - proprietary of course ! Thanks for the comments and checkin out my pictures.

Thanks Venkat ! Yeah... I kinda like the third one too yet it just seems lacking a bit. Can't put my finger on it. Maybe it is the cropping. Thanks so much for the suggestion - I'll see what I can come up with with. I appreciate your eye !

Thanks Yves. Hmm..erasing the lights ?? I didn't think of that. Maybe that coupled with cropping may generate a better image. COOL !! I'll try it.

Oh..in case I never told you .. thanks for all of your flash testing and postings. I have learned tons from you !

HockeyDave,

Nice clear shots. I like the 2nd & 3rd pictures. Would have even been better if cropped.

Much nicer than my 22 year memory of the place. Havent seen it at night, though. Have to see this place again, before seeing the real thing.
Thanks for sharing.

Another place in Nashville to get some interesting shots is the carousel downtown near the water. When I first saw it I wasn’t sure what it was….some very scary characters instead of horses. I also got a chuckle out of the sign that says “Do not ride carousel while intoxicated” (guess they were tired of cleaning up..hehe). I will have to see if I can find the pics I took and post them here.

I haven't been inside in a few years but here is a link to a shot. The second one shows how big that thing is - those are people in the background at ground level !!

-Nashville's Athena stands 41'10" tall, making her the largest piece of indoor sculpture in the Western World.
-The statue of Nike in Athena's right hand stands 6'4" tall.

-There are eleven snakes represented on Athena's breastplate, bracelets and belt.

-The Athena Parthenos in the ancient Parthenon was considered the greatest achievement of Pheidias, the most acclaimed sculptor of ancient Greece.

-Sculptor Alan LeQuire created Nashville's Athena. The statue was unveiled to the public May 20, 1990.

Could you post a picture?
