My nerdy neighbor will be standing there
with his mighty 14.6 mp Pentax K20D,
and, I, will be holding my shriveled, limp
little 12 mp Nikon D3.
Hey, the D3 was a good camera in
its day.
But, now, sadly, my D3 and I obsolete.
The mighty don't last long these days.
Please don't tell anyone that I'm
only shooting 12 mp. Its embarrassing now.

And I am sure your nerdy naighbor will let you know how backwards your D3 is.

Just pull out your Kodak Instamatic 100 and have him do the math over mp equivalence. If he figures it out, it will either put things in perspective, or you will have a market for your ancient pos.

Wrap it in brown paper and ship it to me in an unmarked box. No-one has to ever know about this. Your secret will be safe with me.

lol... I was wondering when a post like this would show up....

Seriously though, coupled with a 21, 43 and 70mm limited prime set, it will make for a killer compact setup, when the D3 is not required and for leasure use.

The compactness and quality of the pentax limited primes is something not to be belittled. I still like the output from the Pentax.

I am sure the 14.6mp camera will do just fine. Until the sun goes down.

...just find yourself a subject that requires fast, precise AF tracking, or benefits from the 9fps sequential shooting - or even one that needs usable ISO quality above 6400 - and you'll feel dandy about your D3 again in no time! :-)

Whipping out your 14-24/2.8G should also quell any vestiges of envy.

Seriously, though, the K20D combined with a trio of Pentax's neat pancake lenses sounds like a sweet setup for casual use and travel. Sounds like something to put on the list.

Well, just remember that no matter how many megapixels - or other bells and whistles they throw in - it is still only a Pentax. And you Sir, have a NIKON. 'nuff said.

= Dan =

I don't think that pentax belongs to the same category as the D3 or the 1dmk3
it's only 3 fps. but...

"Pentax claims that by minimizing the circuitry around each photo site, they have been able to keep the light-sensitive area of each pixel to the same size as other companies manage on 12MP sensors" from Phil's article.

'other companies' means Nikon's D3 no doubt.

ouch! If this holds true then you can compare the D3 sensor directly to the K20 in terms of MP because the photosensible area of a pixel is essentialy the same for both camera.

don't speak too fast before you see photos from it.

That and..
Weight (inc. batt + SD card) 800 g (28.2 oz)
Weight (inc. batteries) 1300 g (45.9 oz)
Weight (inc. batteries) 1335 g (47.1 oz)

D3 and mK3 (last)

Dimensions 141.5 x 101 x 70 mm (5.6 x 4.0 x 2.76 in)
Dimensions 160 x 157 x 88 mm (6.3 x 6.2 x 3.5 in)
Dimensions 156 x 157 x 80 mm (6.1 x 6.2 x 3.2 in)

Also the D3 is one ugly looking camera (too big) in comparaison to the K20 who looks real cute and sexy. The 1dm3 is big too but has a nicer look than the D3.

The OP was joking! He knows the D3 is a better camera. This harps back to the D40 shooter making the guy from northern Europe feel inadequate with his D3. People always post about how some guy with a point and shoot wants to compare his camera to a guy with a D2Xs or something and feeling like he has a better camera. That's what the OP was refering to.

Impossible. But comparable to the D300, yes.

DO your math. THe size of the D3 sensors would be less than 5mp on a sensor the size of the K20. That sensor is smaller than the DX sensor of the D300 by a lot.

It might take great photos. But not for the reasons you are writing about.

Your one criteria test leaves much to be desired:
D40X Weight (inc. batt) 522 g (1.2 lb)
D3 and mK3 (last)

Dimensions 141.5 x 101 x 70 mm (5.6 x 4.0 x 2.76 in)

Sez you. Don't send a kid to do a mans job, buddy. That is a cute little camera but I will eat my hat before any pro with a 1DMKIII or D3 swaps to it for their work rig.

I would not be so sure:

K20: same photosensible area of a the pixel than D3 with smaller area of the whole pixel. Pentax's claim.
Once that is said it means better image detail and equal low light performance.

the semiconductor process can still make a difference but it is not as crucial. And tricks like changing the bias current in the CMOS phototransistor to push the camera sensitiblity to > 25000 ISO like in the D3 are allright but nothing beats good lithography. I always thought Nikon's pb is not to have its own fab for its dSLR sensors.

But, is this new Pentax, a high-speed Full-frame DSLR Body, like the Nikon D3?

Okay, I am not known for getting facts straight. It is a 40D, not a D40. So where does the Fin part some form?
