I am looking for something like the old Digital Wallet that I could buy to take on a trip where I don't want to take a laptop to down load my digital photos every night.

Any suggestions? let me know....thanks!

Just bought an Epson P3000. I f you want to view the photo's it has a great 4 inch screen. Don't have anything to compare down load or upload speed but seems to very well for the same purpose you mentioned so I don't have to carry a laptop.

I bought a Hyperdrive Space. If you want something to view images with, RAW file handling, etc., etc. and Epson is very good. But it's expensive. I just wanted backup storage.

I know the Epsons are popular, but so expensive. As the poster here shows, there are some cheaper options.

Its interesting that Epson's 80GB device is $600.

You could buy almost 8 Transcend 16GB cards for that, with a total storage of 128GB.

You don't say where you are going and for how long. Perhaps you could just bring enough CF cards (4gb is only $30). You can burn dvd at iCafes as well. I have a wolverine 160 gb that is very good. It has been dropped several times w/o damage to the hd.

While some of the HD based systems are neat drop it once or have a
current surge and you may be out all your images are toast...
That's an exaggeration. Laptop hard drives are designed for big impacts, and they are very reliable.
we
travel both in the major countries in Europe and places like the
Dempster Hyw and use a disk steno that writes directly to DVDs and
that eliminates a lot of risk of loss.
Optical media is large, slow and less reliable.

That device costs over $250, not including media. For around $90 you could have a Digimate II+ or III, and an 80GB hard drive. For $180 you could have 2 of them. I use a different device, but I take two and copy each card onto both before reusing the card. That's even more reliable.

OhioBob,

Does the Epson P-3000 display the 40D RAW files? They are not listed as being supported in Epson's literature for the P-3000. I would also want it to display RAW G9 files if you have any experience with those. Epson technical support has not been able to answer this question.

Thanks

Bob

My PBASE page is new and growing so please be patient.

Epson has a clearance center selection on its Epson.com home page. Refurbished P2000, P3000, P4000 and P5000 are available for very large discounts and you don't have to deal with unknown web outfits. I use a Creative Zen and can save up to 40GB with lots of other features such as music , video player, fm radio, alarm clock, and a organizer address book

I got a Nexto M1 from eastgear in SIngapore (very good service)

Downloads a 1Gb card in about 60 sec's, and one of the features I like is the CF slot is very deep, so unlikely to bend pins, which can ruin trip itineraries whilst you get your portable device fixed. A mate used Vosonic's until he changed to Nexto's, as he was shooting professionally with up to 4 camera's in use at any event, each with backup drives. Had 3 Vosonic's suffer from bent pins due to very shallow slot, and easy to bend/break pins if not careful.
