Am I nuts?

About the same size as the E-3 and with all that kit you've got it would be a much more frugal (and arguably wiser) move.

Regards,
Oly

Well, you have heard the opinions of a lot of Oly users, and most of us really like our Oly's, but I think I have to agree with the others, unless there is a very compelling reason to go back to the Oly, with the kit you have I would say, like the others, just upgrade your body to the D300. It is a marvelous piece of work and will give you most of what you want or miss about the Oly, not to mention a little better high ISO response.

You have a great kit, don't give it up on a whim, just replace or supplement the D80 with a really good body in the D300. Now if you had money to spare, I would say go Oly E3. :-)

And I am an Oly user who is contemplating the E3 but also recognize and except the value and quality of the Nikon system. Remember it is the photographer, not the camera that makes the difference.

I certainly would NOT go for two systems.

If you like the D80 and you do not have sufficient funds to go to E-3 with Pro or Top Pro glass I would certainly stay with Nikon. Maybe an upgrade to a "D90" (if there are any glitches you do not like about the D80)?...there are rumours about a successor of the D80.

Primary question: What do I need the E-3 (or any other cam) for, the D80 cannot do?
Good luck!

I am currently a Nikon D80 owner. I have the 18-70, 70-300VR, Bigma,
10-20 Sigma, Sigma 105 Macro and 50 1.8 and SB 600 Flash. I'm mostly
happy with my kit, the D80 is a good camera and I have a lens for
pretty much all eventualities and all are pretty good quality as well.
But I'm thinking of jumping back to Oly and the E3.
No, you aren't nuts at all. I just came back....to an E-1

Thanks for all your imput. It would seem I am nuts!
Maybe I'l have a bit of a save and wait till the E3 prices drop a little.

Out of interest, as I know a lot of you have a better idea of the Oly lens line up than myself, If I were to change systems, what lenses would you suggest to cover the 10-500mm range I currently enjoy with Nikon? I'm happy to lose a couple of mm either end for the sake of finance!
Thanks for your help people.

Lets say I have £3000 to spend. I would imagine I'd get the E3 and 12-60 kit. What would you suggest on top of that from Oly and or Sigma?

Remember...those with the most toys when they expire...win!!!!!!!
Or, in the words of Marillion, '... he who dies with the most toys is still dead.'

I have an E3 and love it but part of the buying decision was my investment in glass. I can't afford two sets of decent glass and the resale price is too low to switch systems.

The real question is will you take significantly better pictures with it?

It's the image that counts, not how it was created.

As someone who constantly strives to get his shots looking good
enough FOR magazine work, there is more than a little irony in the
above (if I read the original intent correctly).

Don't get me wrong, I love my E1s, but to me, magazine prints say
'high end pro gear' or probably 'medium format' quality, while 'real
photographs' says .... well .. old style grainy 35mm enlargements.
Nice if that's the effect your after. Not nice in a modern magazine.
That confused me too. The way I read it later is like the difference between the original photo and what you'd cut out of a magazine. Most magazines aren't what I'd call photo quality, even the one I've subscribed to that has "Photo" in the name. It's a limitation of the print technology used, and I don't think that's fixable without making the magazine prohibitively more expensive.

I think in the case of the above, the culprit is most likely in the printer and not problems in the photo.

12-60 kit. What would you suggest on top of that from Oly and or

I guess the next question is what type of shooting do you think you'll be doing. I guess replacing with something with a similar range to your current setup would be nice hey?

I would suggest maybe a 50-200 (SWD if you can wait/afford), and a 50mm f/2

Yes, i'd like to try and replace my Nikon kit with similar Oly gear. I appreciate Oly gear is more expensive.

Well you could pick up another bigma too... :)

Maybe you should focus on the focal ranges that you most used. Which were your favorite lens'?

then budget wise you could get the following:

14-54mm, $400, or 12-60mm($750-900)
50-200mm $800 or Zuiko 70-300mm $400
Teleconverter, don't know what this costs

$1500 E3
$1200 Lenses
$400 teleconverter
$350 FL-50 flash

I think there are even some rebates available for all of those items too.

Approx 3000 US dollars or so for that system

You could sell your existing equipment and probably get some good value there to compensate. Maybe the whole amount. Just Ebay it, you'd be surprised what you can get for it.

I'm not necessarily recommending but if you want it to happen this is a way you could do it. It sounds like you really want to do it. Owning the E3 myself I can understand why you would, it's a sweet setup.

Firstof all, let's remember, that Nikon APS has 1.5x crop factor, and Oly - 2x. So in 35 mm equivalent You have 15-750 mm/ The easyest task is to cover the tele range. Just change Your bigma 50-500 on Sigma 135-400, and You have 270-800 mm of EFL (even more tele, than gives Bigma on Your Nikon). Or Change Bigma for Nikon with Bigma for 4/3 - and You'll have 1000 mm of EFL. Next we go down and buy ZD 50-200 - fantastic lens, that with E-3 will play the same role, Your 70-200VR played (but also with more abilities in tele range). Next - I recommend 12-60.You'll get versatility of 18-70 with a quality of 17-55/2.8. Next- wide angle. That's more difficult. There is now only one lens to cover this range, ZD7-14, but it's really expensive. Maybe, it's possible to compensate it by ZD8 fisheye. Macro lenses. There are 4 macro lenses in 4/3 system: ZD35/3.5 macro (1:1), ZD50/2 macro (1:2), Sigma 105 macro (1:1, the same as You have with another bajonet) and Sigma 150 (1:1). If You are a real macro shooter, then the best choice probably is Sigma 150, in all other cases - ZD50/2 (it's also a wonderful portrait lens). And You can get what you cannot get with APS - real fast normal lens with EFL near to 50mm in 35 equivalent. Here you can choose from Sigma 30/1.4, Sigma 24/1.8 and Leica Summilux 25/1.4. Sigmas are good and affordable, and Leica - excellent and expensive.
Thanks for your help people.

The 18-70 deffo gets the most use. The 10-20 is pretty new and I loved it instantly. Great wide angle. 70-300VR is also very good. I'd say 18-70 and 70-300 are my most used lenses.

Then it seems that the 12-60, 50-200 would be a good fit, if you needed to save cash the 14-54 is a good performer too, just not as wide or long, and not as fancy AF drive.

as for the 10-20 replacement, hmm maybe you could start saving for the 7-14, I'm not sure what we should do there. :)

Thanks, there is some good advice here.
I have some thinking to do!

I was lucky that i sold my eos kit 7years ago else i would have bought a EOS 5D or a 40D for sure and i would not have had any remorse.

The E-3 is wonderfull in all aspects and i really love it, do not have remorse about spending the 4k euro on new kit...

But Nikon and Canon are very very good too, spend the money on the 80d successor or a 300d if you are thinking about it you could easily buy a 3d for this amount...

Still not convinced hire both for a weekend and take a test drive....
