Hi all,

Is there a way to tell how many shots I've taken with my XT? I ask because my shutter button is starting to stick. It's getting harder and harder to get the camera to take a picture. I'm not sure if the camera is wearing out or if something else is going on.

thanks

If you didn't reset the counter, you can derive the number of shots basing on the folder name written to the CF card. It starts at 100, increased every 100 shots. You'll probably need a cardreader or set the camera up for PC connection through the second tools menu, usb connection on the camera to see the folder name.

My counter is stuck somewhere about 443, this means 443*100 - 10000 = 34300 shots.

Cheers!

I forget the exact EXIF address that stores this value, but it's
definitely in the EXIF data of your pictures. The software will call
it something like ActuationCount.

PC:
http://www.takenet.or.jp/~ryuuji/minisoft/exifread/english/
Mac:
http://homepage.mac.com/aozer/EV/

PS-- The method of counting by folder is GROSSLY inaccurate,
especially considering you can get an exact count.
The XT does not store the number of shutter actuations in the EXIF. Only Canon techs can read this info from the camera using special equipment...

I called up Canon and they said there's no way on the XT to know how many shots you've taken.

I've got around 7500 keeprs, and I toss out about 2/3rds of the shots I take, so I can guess around 10,000 shots.

My shutter button is starting to stick, causing me to miss shots, which is why I was asking.

I didn't realize I gotten so much use out of it!

Not true. Do a little investigation. Take two pictures and track which EXIF value changed. Advanced EXIF software like the ones I linked to will show the appropriate parameter. You can review old pictures and see this is true over a number of months.

Hi there,

I must admit I simply trust my XT and let it increase the number of shots each time I take a photo...

And yes, ok, I now rename my files as soon as I download them because for some totally obscure reason they decided to use "IMG_" as a prefix, whereas in my opinion "IMG" was enough... so I rename IMG_ to IMG1 since I reached 10000.

So now my last photo is IMG14554, so I know that I clicked ... 14554 times.

The "File number" field in the exif says 245-4554 , so I guess it is correct, but I did not try to reset the internal counter to see if this exif value would reset as well...

...I feel bad not to have thought about it myself. How did you reset the file name prefix to keep better count? Have several "identical" files piling up already.

Oh I wish I was able to rename the files in camera, but I only do this offline...
As it is a very simple manipulation, I used to open a "cmd" window and type:

ren IMG_* IMG1*

But now I am addict to "Bulk rename utility" which allows to do so many rename things, with a "preview" which is great, so you really know what is going to happen.

I just used it to rename tons of DSCFxxxx.AVI files from my f30 to datetaken_xxxx.mpg

The interface is a bit ... overcrowded, but simply use the fields you need.

There are well over 1000 EXIF parameters in a 350d RAW file (from the output of jrawio). Do you expect me to go through each of those to find which changes between two pics? Believe me, if it was there, someone would have documented it by now...

As I said before, the manager of Canon down here said that ONLY Canon techs can find this info for xxxD and xxD cameras. I'll post the link if anyone doesn't believe this.

If you set up the XT to use it's file naming without a reset, it should give you the number of shots based on file name. I download my files onto an external HD, then drag that folder into iPhoto. yes, I get 2x the images, but it's a simple way to get some redundancy (ie, backup). If you never rename those original files, you can just see how many of the files have same names, but different shot dates. Knowing that the largest file number name is 9999, you can calculate your actual shots from there. 1 file named 9999.jpg meaning around 10k, 2 meaning around 20k and so on. i'm over 47,000 in 2.5 years, and the camera has on occasion locked up on me, but so far so good. Actually waiting for the shutter to die and then I can upgrade!

Interestingly enough, iPhoto will keep duplicate names in its folders, so it must look at other info besides file name when cataloging images.
