Ok, I put up a thread asking for comments on Photoflex lighting equipment, but I'm opening the door to any lighting brand. I want something that is going to last and produce great light. I'm set on getting a 5' Photoflex OctoDome for it (I think!), so that will eliminate some of my options, I'd think. Hey, I've read until I'm blue about strobes, so I'm just looking for some new info that might fit my needs. Anything you add will help...

Any stories and opinions please!

thanks all...

BRONCOLOR - Used by top pro shooters.

but its really pricy !!!

but you wrote price not an issue -

get your 30k ready for a decent setup !!

I switched from Broncolor to Balcar and then to Alien Bees. Each have the good and bad points but to me quality of light lies more in modifiers and lighting setup. In the end, ABs were much cheaper than the other brands I used.

YMMV

Pardon me, but I never believe people when they say "price no object." When it comes down to it, price almost always counts.

As suggested already, some of the expensive European brands are very, very good, including Profoto, Hensel and Elinchrom. You will, however, pay a premium simply because they are European and the U.S. dollar is worth about 2/3 of a Euro.

Dyna Lite is one great U.S. brand you might consider. These have been used for years by many pros and equipment rental houses. Especially their power packs and heads are heavy duty and made to last.

Jim, price may matter to you, but I am interested in the best, so be it the best at a great competitive price OR the best at the most expensive price point, I still want the superior quality brand that offers excellence. Any fool would prefer paying less, I am however after the best that my hard earned dollars can buy. As my wise grand father always said "if you buy cheap, you buy expensive.", and, while that is not always 100% fool proof advice, in my half a lifes tour of this earth, the less expensive brands are typically cheap for good reason.

So, price is no object if you are after the information I'm after, and that is the up to date information from pros and amateurs that know about the lighting world. I am not at all informed about the current trends OR hard earned reputations in this arena, thus the post.

Kevin - Dyna Lite is not a cheap brand, by any measure. They put out a quality product.

Due to a number of factors, they may turn out a little less expensive than a European brand, but that does not mean they'll do less. They are rugged lights which will last (and why they are favored by rental houses).

Speedotron is another quality brand. The Speedotron Black Line includes their better quality (and pricier) units. They also have a comprehensive line of light modifiers.

Why don't people comment on the White-Lightning lights as well as the Alien Bees? I think the White-Lightning is the step up from the AB.

Usually "the best" is the one that you have a good local representation for, with quick service without having to send the lights anywhere.

The usual top brands are already named and it's a matter of taste which one is best quality wise.
In Europe you could also consider Elinchrom with its famous Octabox.

Strobe flashes are judged by consistancy and the temp of light they produce. If I remember correctly, there was an article or two on the web that compared Speedotron, Profoto, Broncolor, Balcar( Which I believe makes Calumet and Photoflex), and several others. I currently own a mixture or lights. I have a Speedotron Force 10 for use with my 7 foot octodome, and I have White Lightnings. If I was wealthy enough to afford Broncolor or Profoto, I would be shooting with those lights. I think there are many people that get carried away with what brand of light or camera they are using, but in the end no one knows what brand of strobe you used, because its the final image that counts for them.

Profoto is much better than anything else.

It is a lot sturdier and the light modifier are easy to attach to the heads (it's also a lot faster).

If you don't want opinions that are contrary to your beliefs, why ask? Maybe you should have just asked for what people believe to be the best, and not qualify it with flaunting your financial status?
