What ISO do you use?

I was just wondering what ISO setting most people are leaving their D80s set at. Of course it can change, but I am more curious for everyday type of shots. I just realized that a few months back I switched it to 100. I guess I will have to go back through my pictures and see if I notice any difference.

That is to say 100 most of the time. If the light is too faint, Iso auto blips in the viewfinder and Iso increases automatically in a continuous way, not by steps (ex : iso 340), to get a good exposition. You can see the iso number by pressing the function button.

I use 100 for tripod pics and 400 for handheld, I hate blurr due to camera shake. I've found 400 to be really nice on D80, check this JPEG right off camera, manual focus and aperture priority, Nikkor 35mm f/2:

EXIF:
Camera: Nikon D80
Exposure: 0.013 sec (1/80)
Aperture: f/4
Focal Length: 35 mm
ISO Speed: 400

Equipment in profile, but here's a piece of it:

I will use 100 when lighting allows and I remeber to dial it back :) For the most part I keep it at 200 - 400 and think the Q is great. I believe I have used the whole range right up to H1, but at that level you have some pretty severe noise.

ISO 100 is ALWAYS default for me, and then if I need to use a ss that is too slow for hand held and I'm as open aperture as I want to go I will raise ISO as needed.

Why introduce ANY noise into a photo if I can use 100?

My default is 100 if the lighting allows. I adjust higher as necessary for lighting conditions.
You almost always want to use the lowest possible to reduce noise.

Its little funny to read about that 100 rule ... you have used too much your compacts past :--)

Anyway, depending on lenses and what shutter speed I need I use 200 [D50] for very good light and 400 for tele lenses, if needed then 800, still trying to avoid 1600 [but when I use it, I try to do some lighter pics to avoid stronger noise in shadows].

For tripod shots in night ISO 200.

Noise will come if you underexpose your pic.

until I realise, then usually go back as close to the slowest available.

Mine is always set to ISO 800 and program, while the IQ may not be as good as it is at lower ISO I know that I will likely get the shot. If i have time I will adjust to lower ISO different shutter speed etc before shooting. Or if the shot is still there after taking a quick ISO 800 shot I will readjust for the second or third shot. Often you only get an instant to make the shot and this system increases my odds of getting a well exposed blur free shot, IQ may suffer some but I get the shot.

I probably use 400 and 800 a large percentage of the time. I find that most lenses really come into their best at 5.6 and 8 and I will sacrifice really low iso to get to the best range of the lens any time. Even my 85mm 1.8 steadily gets better up to 5.6 so that is where I will try to use it if at all possible. I tend to believe that cleaner high iso images are really letting us get the best images possible out of our optics by letting us close down to the sweet spots.

Actually noise comes from boosting exposure - not underexposing. This is an important distinction.
