Yesterday my pic was taken for the Campinas main newspaper, an article on our student selection process (I work at the admissions office). I saw this guy coming into my office with this heavily used, full of scratches and old looking camera, it was a Nikon, large body, with a SB-800 on top. He took a few pics and I asked him if it was a film camera, he said, no, it's an old digital slr, model, then I saw the D1 logo, just that. He said he still uses it for the newspaper job, it works perfectly (he shot many bursts of 3-5 pics), for pics that they use it's more than enough.

It looked great, rugged, worn out, one that has taken many, many thousand pics.

Regards.

shouldn't suprise you . . . . many of us prefer the 1 series over the new, higher mp cameras. I have 2 D1X cameras because I prefer the look of the images I get.

In the past the 1X etc took many photos that ended up in books, covers of magazine etc etc . . . just because there are new models out, doesn't mean they can't still do it! smile

The D1 is the only digital one I've ever used. It has never failed me.
I'm thinking of upgrading to the D1x sometime next year.

Here she is:

Pretty camera (the one I saw yesterday looked even more worn out, corners were completely devoid of black finish), beautiful pic!

I had one of the first D1 cameras which were released in the UK in November 1999. Now, almost exactly 8 years later, I'm waiting for the D3.

When my D1 was stolen some time later, I used the insurance money to buy the excellent D1x. But I really missed having a copy of the first 'real' DSLR to keep.

Recently I bought on eBay an absolutely untouched and unused D1 body, for £250. It even has the protective clear tape on the LCDs. I took one or two shots, which confirmed how far we have come in those 8 years, then put it safely away as a 20th century antique. Twenty year from now it will be like owning an unused Ford Model T. A great milestone in photographic history.

Great pics. BTW: is build quality improving or not? I only have had my present D80, so no way to compare. Since these days ususally BQ tends to decay, I wonder if newer models will last that long.

--D1 and D80 are in 2 different BQ zones but from D70 d50 d80 d40 they all build at level they shod be and shod last a good amount of time. after more than 3 years with D70 and about 25K pics on it its still is in top notch condition better than my N90s that only had 7K on it. I still think of getting D1X whit in next 6 months as I'm not a fan of gazilions AF points that have less and less light sensativity when use mainly as one central point. For what people sale this retros why not pick one or two.

just being curious, why have you blacked out the "nikon" logo on the viewfinder? theftprotection?

i see lots of people an pros do that, though it was never quite clear to my why.

thanks

I feel like I'm advertising for Nikon if I point the camera at someone with a huge "Nikon" facing them.

No real reason, I guess, just more of a personal preference. Note that I've even blacked out the front of the lens.

It's looking a bit sorry for itself, the LCD backlight has failed and you have to leave the batteries out of it otherwise it'll flatten them in 2 days but it takes pin sharp pics and AFs bang on

Very nice pic. I'll try to get the pic which appeared in the paper, it's not in the internet version, and post it here.
