I really like the battery grips on my cameras, for a number of reasons -- balance against the base of your hand, battery life (obviously), hand holding vertical shots gives you a more solid grip, and it just looks cool :-). What I wasn't aware of, and I am very pleased about, is that the HLD-4 comes with an adapter that allows you to load AA batteries in place of the BLM's! This is a great feature in case you're out shooting and run short of charged BLM's, but have a supply of charged AA's. Good thinking again Oly!

God Bless,
Greg

yup such a good idea other manufacturers have been using it for awhile now

Though I will not getting one of these anytime soon, could you comment on how the HLD-4 compares in size to the HLD-2. I love the grip on my E-1, and it feels "just right." It seems to me that changing to the BLM-1 must add a little bulk to the grip size compared to the slender BLL-1.

Have fun with the new cam!

Though we may have precious little, it's still precious...

...does it still offer any performance boost to the AF system?

Seem any heavier or lighter than the SHLD-2?
I would imagine the main difference is the weight of 1 BLL-1 battery vs. the weight of 2 BLM-1 batteries (or however many AA batteries the adaptor takes).

Get some of the new "hybrid" technology AA's (e.g. Eneloop) and toss them in your bag -- they'll be charged and ready in a pinch.

I've been looking for an HLD-4. Where did you buy it?

I don't know where he got his, but Robert Backman over at Precision Camera in Austin (precision-camera.com) called me today to let me know he had plenty. Unfortunately I have to wait until next month to get one as I'm going to buy a license for lightroom

That was one of my favorite things on the old E-10, took big batteries, but also had a cage for AA's

It is not on the website yet or I can't seem to find it.

That it doesn't take a stupid dedicated Li-Ion battery which is vastly overpriced imn OEM and will render the thing useless in years to come - Li-Ions are relatively short life timebombs (whereas NiMh and Nicads can go on for decades) so making a grip which takes a very popular standard camera battery is a serious benefit .. Canon invented this with the D30 in 2000 - Oly only saw sense by the time the E300 grip was designed DSLR wise.. Nice one ..

Is the Grip Metal ? - one thing which let the E20, E1 and Nikon D200 grips down was that they weren't in keeping with the camera, being made of plastic (and in the case of the E20 and D200 grips, they were cheaply made too) whereas the Canon 5D pulled a first in making a mag alloy DSLR grip - it'd be nice if the E3 grip was also - not essential if the grip is well made polycarb like the old Canon D60 one but sadly most are thin rubbish (witness the D200, D80 and Canon 20D/30D grips)
