I've only just got it my silver FZ50 out of the box but a couple of things strike me when compared to my black one.

The top dial appears to be much easier to read. Could be beneficial when it is not so bright.

The zoom and focus rings are much more obvious. Not a lot of use to most people but I have a sense problem with my hands and I think that this might be beneficial to me at least.

I usually like the look of metal clad bodies done in silver, but my opinion on plastic bodies has been more varied.

Since you are happy with it I assume they did a nice job on the silver?

I actually prefer silver digis, over the black. It certainly doesn't
make my pictures any better to have a black camera. And digis are
just more traditional, in silver to me.
To me it depends what they're made of and whether the finish is 'natural'...
I could have bought my TZ in either color, but I ended up with
silver. :)
So I'd have taken a silver (= natural metal) TZ if I'd bought one, but I'm expecting a black FZ (aren't the silver ones painted?).

Not sure if the black does the same but the writing rubs off in the places you use most on the silver.

I think you will find all of them black, or silver are painted. Most plastic parts are neutral in color as produced. Reason = so any color of painting may be used easier.

A bit of trivia. In the earlier days of small camera photography (ie. 35mm) all the cameras were silver, some with black leather trim. Some of the pros started to wrap them with black tape, to make them less conspicuous within their working inviorments.

So the manufactures did them a favor, by making pro cameras black (so they no longer had to tape them). But as far as the camera went there was no difference black, or silver with black trim. The only basic difference was the all black color, and some extra cash to pay for the convenience.

But somewhere down the line, would be amateurs got the idea black gave them a pro status, of course it does nothing for their other professional lacking. :)

I remember the OLD days of HP calculators. they set a standard for build quality and design.

their buttons were 'printed' right thru the depth of the whole button! almost like the lettering was hollow and filled with a diff color plastic. impossible to rub off since its thru and thru.

probably asking too much to have that level of design done. too bad.

I noticed that Clear'r'gear have only silver ones and I guess by your "Clutching at straws" excuses ;-) Camerabox only had silver ones left too - this sadly happens when a model with 2 colours is discontinued and the last of them are being sold off, the Naffest colours remain :( .....

It looks like the FZ55 (50 with FZ18 Range) or FZ70 / 100 (as 55 but with FX100 12Mp CCD) will be here soon - so grab those black 50s while you can ;-) LOL .. Believe it or Not, there is a dealer STILL with Silver FZ30s !!

Both models are made of black plastic I've seen damaged examples of the FZ30 in both colors - I've never seen the lettering wear off a black one, only silver ones.. the FZ20 was the opposite, the lettering would flake off the black ones (cured in later models)

Not only the pros - I had a Leica M3 (they only produced black from the M4 onwards) and used black insulating tape so I could shoot candid shots. (I didn't know that pros did it when I started.)

Also did it with my film compacts too, for the same reason. And also my silver FZ3 - I painted the lens hood matt black.
But somewhere down the line, would be amateurs got the idea black

No - it STILL makes one less conspicuous - theres nothing worse than a specular reflection on a silver camera. At least Trev's got one of each so can adapt to circumstances.

That unparalleled build quality died a horrible death with the 49G.... I've got one, but hardly used it. Its buttons are simply useless. But the older models, still going strong :D

Where then! should we classify the pine, blue, green, etc, etc, ones
??. They should have some place!!!. :)
LOL!
Jewellery surely, they can't be cameras, can they?

... which black.

There are all kinds of silver finishes on cameras. Some look like titanium, some like platinum, some like gunmetal, and some like a dull silver.

It also depends on the quality of the finish.

My silver LX2 looks great, because it has an all metal body, and the fit and finish is superb. But many silver cameras are just plastic bodies with silver paint on them. On some, the "silver paint" is so thin that it starts wearing off after a short time.

Now the very same thing can be said about black cameras. Some look good, and some don't. If the camera is well made, the black will look like metal, and maybe be texturized. It will look like graphite.

But a cheap black plastic camera will look like exactly what it is. A cheap black camera. Like something you got for free by taking out a trial subscription to Time Magazine back in 1984.

Which one of these looks better to you?
