I recently picked up a Like New D2H from KEH. The shutter had 5000 clicks on it. The body was clean as a whistle, and the strap had never been put on the camera. It came in the original box with all of the software, battery and battery charger.

I took it out for a spin at the Vietnam Wall on Saturday. Here are a few shots from my first outing. Images made with D2H & 70-200mm F/2.8

SIGNATURE: This is a picture I did not take of a tall, greying man with crooked teeth whom I've encountered three times while photographing downtown, and each time, he's approached me quickly from the front, with a long stride, and each time he's leaned toward me and said the exact same thing 'OLD ONES ARE BETTER' while palming his ancient brass Leica, opening his hand enough to show me what's there, but not enough really showing-off!' Joe,
Wow, impressive work, look forward to more of your post. congrats on a fine
piece of equipment and an operator that commands it well!

I have been looking for a camera to compliment my F5, until I get the D3 (Who knows when that will be), so I decided to pick up the D2H.

So far, I really like it.

Joe;

the 70-200 and the D2H is a KILLER combo -- nice results....you're really gonna love it ... I have since sold my D2h and got a D200, but there are times I really miss the 'brick' -- especially for sports....

enjoy !

Joebt:

I'm looking to purchase either a D2h or D2hs? I have been looking all over various threads looking for comments or advice between the two, I'm not a pro just a hobbist and can"t afford to spend tons of money to purchase a "used" camera, How did you come to your decision that the D2h was plenty for your needs.

Thanks Rubicon:

love the last one.

what do pros eat for breakfast?

We eat lenses with small maximum apertures: only f/3.5 and smaller.

Cheap cost and high fiber content.

chris!

I didn’t spend the extra 1,200 on a D2HS because I already pre-ordered a D3, but I do wonder if I made the right decision or not. The photos I’ve seen comparing the high ISO between the D2H and the D2Hs did not look to be that great of a difference.

If I did not have a D3 on Pre order, I would more than likely sell the D200 and get a D2HS to go with the D2H, but since I did order the D3, High ISO will be a function performed by the Light Eater (D3)

Great shots ,razor sharp!

You can not go wrong with the D2H , specially using daylight or flash. Thom's D2H cd book and a hot mirror filter complete this camera. You may want to check with KEH to see if the camera had the shutter or metering board replaced. These two defects are known and corrected by Nikon ( I believe for second owners also , I might be wrong- call them). The old man with the Leica was probably my grandfather with his ancient M3, just kidding!

Joe,

As I mentioned in another thread by "rubicon", please be aware that the D2h has the unfortunate reputation of failure from three known causes:

a) Meter
b) AF
c) "Err" flashing on top display (usually a problem with the shutter)

My D2h suffered from "a" and "b" within a few months of ownership and was repaired by Nikon under warranty. Then, just about 3 months ago, it suffered from "c" and the repair had to be paid out of pocket which cost me $450.

I haven't heard of any D2hs models that have had this same failure.

Either way, I absolutely LOVE your pics and it just comes to show that it is the skill of the photographer and not the equipment that matters—I have the same camera as you and my pictures NEVER look this good!

Cheers.

Your skills from your days of Lieca carried over quite well. You have a great eye and understand exposure fantastic.

Just curious on your settings with the D2H. Seeing it was your first outing what did you set the major settings at ?

I have 3 D2H camera's and one has the 70-200Vr crazy glued to it (in a way cause it never come off) The other has My 28-70 2.8 and the 3rd gets all the lens changing. It truely is one of the best camera's around and for the money "nothing " can beat it.

You made asmart choice and when my D3 arrives it will only assist my D2H equipment. Although I will love the High ISO.

If ever you need any help with something i can help with, just ask, Fred

I remember a while back when the meters were failing and the auto focus modules were going up in smoke too. I hope the one I just got is fine. I’m not sure what I can do now to make sure those three areas of concern are ok???

I really like this camera, and would hate to be put off by having to constantly put this camera in the shop. I will keep a good eye on this thing and take note of any irregular happenings.

Thanks for the kind words regarding my photos. I’m looking forward to using it again this weekend for a big assignment.

Hello Fred ;-)

I got the D2H on a Friday, and I took these photographs the very next day. Because I didn’t know much about the settings in the camera, I shot in RAW (NEF) all day, which is what I will do all the time.

So basically, I guess you can say the camera settings are default. I have an assignment coming up on Saturday, and I will not have any time to play with the camera before then. I’m heading to the Pocono’s for the holidays, and I plan on taking the D2H (For Color) and the F5 (Black & White Film). I may play with the settings if I get a chance.

Ohh...I still carry and use my Leica M3 DS every time I go out to shoot ;-)

Ok Joe now I'm curious. The pictures you showed either had some great post work (which they don't look over posted, they look so natural)

There are no default settings what so ever. I strongley suggest going to the menu settings and look at the set-up menu:

Check and record the following on paper incase you ever change you will have a good starting point from which to set things on.

Go to the shooting menu and chanck the following settings:

image sharpening
Tone
color
hue
WB
ISO

I think I got em all. You might very well have them set really good from the previous owner who knew that camera or got some good advice on settings from someone. As mentioned before by a previous shooter of a d2h, his work never looked like yours. I have different ways I set mine but am curious on what yours was set at. Check it out and let us know. But make sure you record that info for yourself too.

Thanks, Fred (forgot glasses forgive spelling)
