Hi All

Just need some help from 1DS owners of the original one,

Can any one tell me should i buy one as I want rid of my 20D
and the 1DS price ive been offerd seems good,

And any one with sample from the 1DS that would be great

It will be going along with my current 1D mk2 & mk2N

Thanks

Hi,

as to image quality at 100 - 400ASA, the 1Ds1 is excellent. Due to the pretty weak AA filter the resolution is almost on par with the 1DsMKII. I did a comparison some time ago, see

http://www.wjaekel-foto.de/1dsmk21ds/town/town.htm

http://www.wjaekel-foto.de/1dsmk21ds/castle/castle.htm

warning: large crop files, -converted from raws, no sharpening applied !

Color rendition of the 1Ds is known to be very good , too. Of course, the decision depends on your needs and style of photography. The trade off of the 1Ds is the increasing noise at higher ISOs, its smaller buffer and slower processor which means a longer time for displaying your photos. Beyond this, the display is not very good in bright light. So, if you shot landscapes at 100-200ASA and need the build quality of the 1 series, the 1Ds still is an excellent choice - depending on the price, of course. If you shot action or Indoors at higher ISOs, I wouldn't go for it anymore.

Regards

Wolfgang

Considering resolution, with its weak AA filter, the1 DS MK I is still a king. It's drawbacks: noise at high ISO and noise in shadows because of underexposition, so exposire compensation or careful sopt measuring is needed. I have a 1 DS MK I and a 1 D MK II, and the 1 DS MK I is still my primary body except when shooting in low-light in high ISO without flash is needed.

Considering that you already have 1D mark II , I wonder what you have the 20D for and why you will be exchanging that with a 1Ds ?

Although I regard the 1Ds as one of the finest cameras ever , I would hesitate to recommend it at this point in time unless you need the distinctive image quality. The 1Ds is by no means a point and shoot , it punishes under-exposure with noise in the shadows , and quite simple , its files are not so easily corrected in PP compared to 1D mark II and 20D. Also , since the electronics are dated , you are in for 3+ seconds delay from shot to review. And you desperately need the histogram to check that exposure... (the LCD isnt good for anything else though).

I recently sold my 5D (which I bought to replace a lost 1Ds one and a half year ago) and my idea was to get 1Ds again. However I picked up a 1D mark II some time back , and the image quality (rather I learned how to PP the files) and the fantastic speed and handling of this camera has really grown on me. Although, since its not full frame and its resolution is too limiting it will be a temporary solution for me, I dont think that I could go back to the pedestrian buffer of the 1Ds again.

1Ds Mark II prices started climbing down as the 1Ds Mark III (and probably the D3) was introduced , and (as was the case with 1Ds when the 5D was announced) I suspect that it will take a free fall when the 5D mark II is announced. So in the end , my advice would be to dump both the 20D and one mark II , and going for a 1Ds Mark II in 2-3 months. At least that is what Im doing ;-)

If the price for the 1Ds MI is good, you should consider it seriously. I got a 20D since 2 years, and bought a 1Ds recently : I wanted to go full frame and to have a viewfinder with 100% coverage. It is a second hand, and the price was very interresting.

After a few months with that baby, I can acknowledge that I felt in love with it. It has something very special.

I like to take my time when I take pictures, so 1Ds is perfect for me. I do not play with high ISO, but do not hesitate to go up to 400 ISO, and the result is absolutely positive. The step between 20D and 1Ds is quite huge.

I have had a 1D MII in hands once, and a colleague bought a second hand 1DMII recently. Shape and layout are almost the same as the one of the 1DsMI. My colleague had a 300D before and he is (let's say) disturbed by the 1.3 crop factor compared to 1.6 with 300D. But he likes his 1DMII very much !

All of this is very subjective I know (I am not a pro), but going to 1D series (S or not S) is another experience...

I wish you a great pleasure with your future camera !

Anything will be better than a 20D everything sucks on it compared to my 1D Mk2's

I try to get all perfect in camera saves me time so the 1Ds wont be too much fo a problem and make me 16-35 wider,

I'd keep my 1Ds over my 20D.

This thread explains perfectly why I don't use it much. I am using it as a point and shoot camera for my children's performances and sporting events. I love it for the focusing. But as a point and shoot it takes some effort to get the pictures right. I am considering either the 40D or 5D for this purpose. After reading this thread, I might want to hope that it doesn't sell on Ebay, and I should get the XTi for the family events and keep the 1Ds MkII for my serious landscape pictures.

up to 800 ISO

this entire page was done with a 1Ds classic, metz 54 and 70-200 IS
http://www.imagingphotographics.com/colny1.html

it was a parade, street photography, often walking backwards following the subjects and the camera never missed the shot (AF and overall sharpness): amazing camera indeed.

not as fast as the 1Ds II (which I didn't use much that day because it had a sigma 15-30 on)

colors:

are simply unique. For some amazing colors the combo 1ds and the old 28-70 3.5-4.5II will shock you. Colors never seen before .. :)

just the fact that I gave to the "classic" the better lens that day should tell which one I prefer, all considered.

I totally agree with SFJP.

IMHO, the ONLY real advantage to the II is better high ISO performance. The increase in resolution of the II is balanced by the originals weak AA filter.

It is an excellent camera. Now the 5D offers greater (INMHO) greater accutance and more saturated images that give more "pop", but for portraits and most landscapes, I still wonder at the 1Ds's capabilities. Of course you also get a 1 series body with the 1Ds.

The original 1Ds is still a fantastic camera. I use mine for shooting food, wine and product with tremendous response. It does show it's age when I try to shoot lifestyle and fashion because it has a slow buffer and processor when compared to the 5D or 1DsII. If you can live with the slower speed and ASA 100 to 400 and find one for about $1800 buy it. Otherwise, I would buy a 5D. BTW, I'd sell mine for $2000.
