Hi Phillip,

Thanks for your input.

I have a 16-35 I'll be using for landscapes (I don't do them much anyway). The 28mm is going to be used for event work where a flash is innappropriate, equestrian pics, theater, museums, environmental portraits and street candids. Hopefully it will excell at those things.

Ian
I bought it mainly for landscapes and was a little disappointed. I
tested it against my 17-40 and 24-105 @ 28 at f4 and both the zooms
were sharper. Of course they don't go to f1.8, but my 28 is pretty
soft wide open. I've since bought a Carl Zeiss Distagon 28 f2.8 and
adapter and it absolutely blows all the others away for sharpness. I
think the CZ was actually cheaper than the Canon 28. However, it has
manual focus and aperture, so is a "challenge" for low light "snap"
shooting ;-)

Rod,

I hope you're right that this lens is underrated. Nice shots, BTW. I like the second the best :) .

thanks Ian! Good luck with your 28 and the horse show, post 'em up !
Dom!

It's nice to see you ;) . Thank you for the pics. I esp love the
night carnival gallery. Veeery cool. I sold my 20mm f/1.8 last
month so there's been a gap in my prime line up. I don't like being
without a full compliment of primes, esp since I'll be shooting
horses indoors soon (no flash allowed). I look forward to getting
this little gem.

I like that second one too but I am not sure why. All three are just snapshots that I don't view as anything special but were intended to show what the 28mm f/1.8 is capable of.

Many people really don't like this lens but I think it is a keeper. I haven't been disappointed by it yet. It makes a nice "normal" lens on the 20D.

Thanks again.

loved your pbase gallery dom.
Hi Iggy thanks a lot!
I'm also from London and amazed at some of the locations you've shot
  • specifically the vantage points... from where did you take the
shots of the London skylines, and the storms over London etc.
lots of different locations, but only the times when lighting (or sky) was interesting did the shots end up in gallery. Just ask away about which shots you are curious about - or pop a comment question on the site beneath the photo/s in question, and I'll reply
Amazed at what the 28 1.8 does on your 5d. I have it on the 350D and
must say that I struggle with low light focus at low f-numbers. Did
you shoot the thames festival without any focus assist?
my dSLR route was 300d -> 350d -> 20d -> 5d. I noticed AF was often dodgy on 300d and 350d, but there was a jump , a marked improvement with the 20d and a little improvement again (maybe, I think) with the 5d.

The big difference was 350d up to 20d. In general I think the AF was more consistent and hunted less, but this was most noticable on the faster lenses, and perhaps in large part to the extra sensitivity of the center AF box on 20d and 5d with lenses of f2.8 and faster. I use center point only most of the time (it is usually the most sensitive and accurate AF sensor).

I had a little hunting yes at the night carnival, looking for light and contrast to lock onto, each subject varied in how easy it was to lock onto, but I'd say 75-80% of the shots didn't have any trouble and locked pretty instantly if I found a good outline for the AF to hit.

Cheers!

ps, no focus assist. I don't own a flashgun (I dont know how to use one!!), and the 5D doesn't have onboard flash, just a hotshoe.

Nice pussy! Love the low angle shoes shot too, great bokeh and colours there!
I like this lens a lot, especially for low light. It's easily
handholdable at rediculously long shutter speeds. I tend to shoot it
wide open quite a bit, and really don't have an issue with the
sharpness.

20D, ISO 1600 1/15@f/1.8 (handheld, no noise reduction or sharpening)

ISO 1600, 1/15@f/2.5

agreed. And nice shots!

The lens often get's panned by testers for it's very un-resolved corner and edge performance at wide apertures... all I can say is I've not encountered a single real life shot yet with this lens, where that was a problem for me. When shooting it at f1.8 -> f2.8 I've usually got the intended subject somewhere in the central 50% portion of the frame.

If I ever need a corner pin sharp for some reason, like a landscape, or a subject right at the border, then I'll just stop it down a bit.. or use my 17-40 @ 28mm setting!
underrated. Yeah, it is isn't razor sharp wide open but it is good
enough for low light situations. Here are a couple of my shots:

I hope you like yours as much as I like mine.

from Hampstead heath, near parliament hill
from top of Tower Bridge, the walkways... was great hazy light, I warmed up the colour temp to red, in RAW converter. That power station smoke was lit up beautifully, but i've not seen it smoking ever since then, maybe it's closed down I dont know
would be interested to know where you captured these from. I think I
can work out where the rest was shot.

marvelled again at this one

  • one of the best i've seen. Were you just lucky or was it a lie
outside for an hour waiting type of shot??
pure luck , was driving along park perimter road about 7am, saw him and stopped to take some shots. I got out and stalked him after that... he was a very un-shy model, esp for a fox of all creatures... but this was my fave shot due to light, trees, and his/her pose!

Canon. :)
