Forgot to mention how important this is and I was lucky I had some at home as immediately my finger prints were all over the LCD. I cleaned it and cut one to size and stuck it on. I had bought them for my small GPS. I noticed when I put my eye to the viewfinder my nose made a mark too. So screen protector a must.

I put protectors on no matter how durable the manufacturer says the naked LCD is. I carry with neck strap and you never know about coat hardware or zippers scratching it. When I sold my G7, the cosmetics helped me get a better price for it.

Savas, my understanding is that it is not a 'naked' LCD but has a cover on it like all the DSLRs. It would be worthwhile checking this out at the Canon Jamesburg parts store since the cover for the 5Ds and other DSLRs is quite inexpensive. And--in truth, I've never had to replace one on any of my DSLRs. I might have to call and see if there is a parts number for the cover--its the same size as the new DSLRs LCDs too, so it may be the same (not necessarily same LCD, but cover).

Hi Savas,

Nice to see you still here. Just out of curiosity, how did you sell your G7 (ebay, a friend?...) and how much did you get for it? ALso, was it worth trading up to the G9?

Thanks,
abana

Please let me (and forum) know what you uncover when you call. Is this user replaceable, or does it require sending the camera in?

Even one scratch would be like getting the first mark on clean, white sneakers and would bother me. I handle my 5D with reverence while the G9 will hang, bounce around, be stuffed into a bag filled with other stuff and, while at parties, be subject to mishandling/ picked up and handled by people with jewelry on, "attacked" by kids, etc.

I just spoke with someone at Jamesburg NJ Canon. Yes, the G9 has the same replaceable protective screen LCD as the G7.

Unfortunately they didn't have the information there....I don't think they sell parts so I guess this is why. I wouldn't know where to call for that info.

They just may not have the cover yet to give you the price--it would have to be larger than the G7's I'm guessing. I have bought parts from the Jamesburg place--only place I know to actually buy Canon parts, so I think its just because they don't yet have the 'actual' product in hand.

I was going to call later--thanks for doing this Marla LOL---I really don't like protectors and have never used one, knowing I could buy new covers for all my DSLR LCDs. In fact though---I 've never really scratched an LCD enough to worry about in 7 years.

I sold it for $425.00. The jury is still out as I haven't used the G9 extensively. Raw is nice, but unsupported widely at this time. Improvements like the LCD, battery indicator and ISO information is welcome. I had IS for the custom button, but it's no longer supported for the same button.

After reading your post, I'm wondering if I spoke to the wrong department as I didn't ask for the parts department and the person I spoke didn't know the answer to my question and had to check with someone else. I'll try to call back later and get more info - asking for the parts department. I may have gotten technical support.

My experience has been the same. I have taken over 20,000 pictures with Canon DSLRs and never scratched the LCD cover. This included my frequent wacking the cover with my watch and laying it down on the cover to shoot straight up. Whatever Canon uses in the DSLR cover must be pretty hard.

How do you replace it? Do we have to remove the tiny screws and open
the body of the camera?
That would sure be an option. I disassembled my S series once and it came apart pretty easy. And yes, I also put it back together and it still works. :->

On the DSLRs you pry the cover off with a tiny screwdriver. The cover is held on with double stick tape.

Contrary to popular belief, the G9 LCD is NOT user replaceable. I also called Jamesburg and came away with this information. The person on the phone recommended that I maintain my LCD protector on it. Canon Jamesburg phone is: (732) 521-7007. A third party might want to call and confirm whose story is correct.

As I stated below, I did call and got a representative - he did not know the answer, excused himself to check with his boss, and came back with the information that yes, the G9 does include the same replaceable protective LCD screen. It could very well be this is the wrong information; however, it was the information I was given calling the 732 number as indicated.

and although a bit obsessive about babying my gear, the one and only time I did not apply a protector, my one-week old 5D suffered a nasty gouge simply from contacting a zipper on my trousers. Why be concerned about replacing the LCD (cover) if you do not have to?

The absolute best LCD protector I have used (and I've tried many), is the InvisibleShield. It is crystal clear, bullet-proof and installs without any bubbles if one follows the instructions exactly. The company is fairly quick to offer protectors for new models and the G9 should be available soon. The material has been used in aviation applications.

As I wanted one right away for the G9, I ordered a "custom" shield, providing the measurements -- they are that good. (I've got them on a dozen different items, PDA phones, portable storage devices, 1DII, 5D, G9, Leica, iPods, etc.)

Read about them and view the online demo at:

(disclaimer: I have no connection with the company whatsoever)

Another good protector costs a little more and is made from Schott glass, with multiple optical coatings. It's Giottos Aegis series of protectors. The visual difference between it and my Shieldzone protector is quite clear.

I would love to compare when the LCDs are on. How is it for resisting scratches?

How does it effect viewing from the LCD vs the Shield?

Thanks
