Hello,

I am intending to invest in 18-200 mm VR for my Nikon D40. I am just curious to check out some images from the ppl on this forum who currently have the same lens. I am specifically looking for the images taken at 18mm & the same image taken at 100mm & 200mm. I know it may sound funny..but was just curious to see its reach & clarity..b4 I invest the hard earned money........

Thanks...

Hey Victor,

Thanks for sharing the link, however it does not contain any images taken at 18mm & 200mm.

I am specifically looking for the reach of it... A friend of mine uses his Canon S2IS to the fullest & I just wanted to check & compare the output of this lens (18-200mm).

Please excuse the very poor composition - the close building on the left side of the pic. These were done for a friend on a grab and go schedule a while back, but maybe it is at least partially what you are after. It doesn't have a 100mm pic, just 18 and 200 with added cropped images to 500mm angle of view and around 1000mm. But all are from the 18-200. I haven't tried to fix exposure or anything else, just to show the angle of view possibilities.

200mm cropped to 500mm field of view

200mm cropped to about 1000mm field of view

18mm again

Both shots using "shoe leather zoom" to get the same relative subject size inthe frame. (and cropped here).

I didn't pay a lot of attention to the metering so the exposure is slightly different between the shots, but we're looking at sharpness here so hopefully that doesn't matter.

At 200mm
(1/100 sec, f/5.6)

At 18mm
(1/80 sec, f/4.5)

There's a slight difference in sharpness, no doubt the lens is softer at the 200mm end but only if you pixel peep.

It also helps to stop down a bit - f/5.6 (wide open at 200mm) is one of the lens's weakest spots.

I"ve taken tons of shots at wide open at 200mm and have been very
happy with them.
Oh, me too. And there is an example below (qualified only by the fact that the IQ has been knocked off just a little bit from the original by the rough edit/crop I did for posting online. The original is razor sharp).

I should clarify: I have no problem with the lens. I know that the "laboratory" tests and the (apparent) consensus of those who have looked very critically at it, is that it is not as sharp at 200/5.6 as it is at other settings. And the little test I have done confirms that. If you look VERY VERY closely.

But that does not mean there is any practical issue. I would be the last person to say "beware!" about this lens at any setting. I like to hit a smaller aperture if possible, just because it may make a small contribution to IQ. But I certainly don't lose sleep (or photos) over it.

(Also, I need to clarify the extent of the crop in the photos I posted - I will do that in another post)

Since I am offering these as examples I should also point out that the images shown here are a very deep crop from the original.

These images are a portrait crop from a landscape original that is about 6-7 times wider, and a little higher, than you see here.

So any slight differences you see here would be simply not noticeable in real life.

I think the lens is well worth the money and here is one of my 18mm pics using it on my D200. Dave

Hi,

I am still new to image processing, but I am wondering how you can crop the image and know the focal length. Did you do it in photoshop? Thanks.
