Do any 5D owners here use the Direct Print button?

The 5D has been around for 2 years now and is clearly scheduled for a
facelift soon - there are more than a few wishlists on this forum as
to what that facelift will bring.

However, in the 20 months that I have owned my 5D I have NEVER
deliberately pressed the Direct Print button and it seems absurd that
Canon dedicated such prime real-estate to what IMHO is an essentially
useless function. It is especially galling when other useful
functions are buried in custom menus.

I understand that Canon would like their camera owners to buy into
their inkjet printers too, and the DP button is tailored for that,
but that concept really belongs to movie spin-offs and toy stores. I
would prefer a properly designed photographic tool rather than direct
access function controls dedicated to mere marketing gimmickry.

Am I unusual in never using this prime level feature of the 5D?

If you own a 5D, do you use the Direct Print button on the 5D
a) all the time,
b) often,
c) occasionally,
d) tried it a couple of times for experimentation but never again, or
e) (like me) never at all except by accident.

I don't expect any of this to influence Canon one iota, however they
must be doing their own market research and I doubt that the
percentage breakdown will differ much from this forum in terms of
this button's use. It will be interesting to compare the percentages
in favour or against this 'feature' and compare that to whether Canon
keep it on the 5DII.

Its for Grannies with their Selphy Printers and has no right to be even on a hi-end consumer Compact let alone a FF DSLR !!

Please ignore the Typos, I'm the world's worst Typist

And I totally agree that something much more useful could be assigned to that button. Canon could even make a CF that would allow you to choose what function to assign to the button -- including DPOF.

I have focusing set to the asterisk (star) button (C. Fn 4). This
introduced a problem though: whenever I'm reviewing pictures and try
to focus I just end up zooming out the preview image. This is fixed
by setting C. Fn 18 to 1 so that pressing the asterisk button returns
to shooting. So now to zoom out while previewing I have to hold down
the print button while pressing the asterisk button.

So yes, i use it all the time. ;)
I just don't follow you. Many of us use CF4 to relocate focus, but
I've never had a problem reviewing images and returning to actual
shooting. When you say "whenever I'm reviewing pictures and try to
focus I just end up zooming out the preview image" it doesn't make
much sense. All you need to to is touch the shutter release (half
press) or push the review button. You NEVER need to touch the print
button.
Since I've relocated the focus to the asterisk button the shutter release does not focus. When I raise my camera to my eye the first thing I do is attempt to focus on my subject. If I was reviewing photos and forgot to press the play button again to go out of playback mode then pressing the asterisk button just zooms out the playback and doesn't accomplish focus.

I've missed plenty of candid shots because of this (just like I've degraded plenty of images because I forgot to lower my ISO once I'm in better light). The solution to the problem is to set custom function 18 so that the camera returns to shooting when the asterisk button (or focus point selection button) is pressed. This way I'm never caught zooming out of a preview instead of focusing.

The drawback of custom function 18 is that I now have to hold down the print button while pressing the asterisk or focus point selection buttons to zoom the preview. It's a minor inconvenience but the overall benefits of separating focus from the shutter release button, and not missing shots because I was in playback mode, greatly outweigh it.

Hi there,

if you are reviewing the pictures by pressing the "play" buton or "set" button (set in CF1), you can return back to shooting mode immediately upon pressing the shutter button.
This procedure works even though you have set CF4-1/3 to the " " button.

The "print" button does not need to be used at all.
With regards to the print button, do agree with all the rest that it is never used.

Yes, I realize this. However, as I stated before, the first thing I try to do when I raise the camera to my eye is focus. This is not accomplished with the shutter release button as I have remapped it to the asterisk button; so my first action is almost always to press the asterisk button, not the shutter release.

Wish that Canon would ever listen to its users...

Post Processing Functions or Off-Line functions DO NOT NEED a direct access button. A menu function is plenty enough.

Canon, PLEASE LEAVE THE REAL ESTATE OF THE CAMERA TO THE FUNCTIONS THAT WE NEED WHILE SHOOTING!!!

How hard is this to understand ? could someone translate it in Japanese please?

Thanks

I've only had my 5D a few months, but although I've used most other functions, I have yet to even press the Direct Print button once. LOL.

1.5 years with the 5D and never even thought of pressing it once.

On the other hand, I used it on my wife's 400D to test it for her use...

It may well be.

HOWEVER, off-line functions should stay in the menu. Could you please tell us if this segment knows how to use the menu on the Canon EOS 5D?

If they do, this function should reside somewhere within the menu functions, along other off-line functions.

If they don't, then Canon should seriously consider designing two 5D:

. one for the tiny segment of retired japanese with money (those who are purchasing Nikon anyway).. this one will have no menus, just hundreds of direct access button, and will have a huge hard drive to keep all the photots (no access to PC), and that can connect to the internet to download these photos to the huge Canon fileserver established for this segment....

. and one for us, the majority of users, needing other on-line functions, such as Mirror Lock-up, to have direct access button.

Now how difficult is that? Oh, but wait, that's impossible, is Canon listening? I see so many people in almost every forum that I visit, asking for a MLU button. I have not seen anyone asking about the direct-print button.

Enough rambling, since no one is listening anyway...
