I dunno what other peoples experiences have been with viovio, but i thought i'd share mine. I ordered a test book because their prices seemed pretty amazing and i have a family reunion i have to print some books on and i wanted to increase my profit margin a bit. I have to be able to charge around 80-90 bucks for a book like this around here, i have no choice. So anyways, i upload some pics through their terrible system. Every other place i've tried has a much easier and friendlier to use system than this, but i figure oh well, a little extra work no big deal.

I place the order, 20ish bucks for a 8x10 book. I get an email confirmation right away. I get one three days later saying the book has gone to print. Book arrives another 4 days later. They take a bit longer than blurb for example.

So today i get the book. I open the package and first thing i notice is the cover looks terrible. The photo is way more contrasty than what i uploaded and it has a drastic color temp change to the cool side. The cover is pretty lightweight as well. So i open the book, pages are very light weight and cheap feeling. I look at the first pic, wow, TERRIBLE. There's color banding all over it and a bunch of blue bands all over the pic where color gradients change. I go through the book and every single pic has this blue banding and every single pic has had it's color temp altered towards the cool side drastically. I followed all the instructions uploading the pics and such, so the color temp aside, the blue printing bands in all the pics are just unbelievably unacceptable. The quality of the print on the pics is absolutely horrid. I printed the exact same pics in this book as i did in a blurb test book and the quality is night and day different.

If anyones thinking of using them for a book, i'd think twice. I couldn't be less happy with the print quality or color and the general quality of the book. Moral of the story, you get what you pay for. It looks like around 40 bucks cost is the cheapest you can expect to find a decent quality book.

Maybe someone else had some better luck, but i'd highly recommend against using viovio.

I looked into them once, about a year ago. Their software was so horrid that I bailed right away. Never do business with anyone whose software is cr@p. You WILL regret it. It's a litmus test, a barometer. Same category as eating food made by a skinny cook or getting your hair cut from a bald barber.

Scott,

I am the founder of Viovio and a longtime dpreview reader. I am so sorry to hear about this. It sounds like you received a printing error. This does happen from time to time.

Please send an email to customer support (support -at- viovio.com) with your order number. We would love the chance to make it right, and make you a satisfied customer. It helps if you include a pic of the printing errors so we can tell what went wrong.

Please let us know if we can help you in any other way.

I just wanted to chime in here. I agree that Viovio's book making software is for the birds. Having said that, I had them print a book of mine a while back and it turned out fantastic. I ordered the same book through a couple other companies that offered lower prices and was sorely disappointed with the results. Viovio's printing of my book was by far the best quality than the others that I used.

I just wanted to let people know that they are capable of making a fine book and no, I don't work for them.

Hi Brian,

"For the birds" eh? Hehe. I can appreciate this position. When we started, our approach was to not compete with desktop applications, and I still think that is a fair assessment. Many of our users use InDesign, Photoshop, Elements, iPhoto, or Aperture to make layouts. And then export the pages or PDF and we print those directly.

After spending a few minutes with any of those applications, i can see how difficult it is for any web based application to complete with those in terms functionality and productivity. The other option is a java based application, but even with the latest and greatest hardware, those solutions buckle under the stress of several hundred megabytes of photos.

The bookmaker we created is for creating simple books quickly from galleries of images (a dual benefit of photo sharing and photo books). One advantage is that it can crunch through many hundreds of images more quickly than placing each of 500 pages manually. We are planning a template based bookmaker, and finally browsers are catching up with advance of AJAX/CSS to do some pretty powerful things.

We are moving in that direction but we have been spending our efforts on things like Mini Books and our soon to be released 12.5x10 portfolio.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about our books.

A wise fellow programmer of mine once said, when we were considering moving to Java, "I don't mind working hard, but I don't want to work THAT hard." :) My own experience with Java was similar.

I may have to give Viovio a try some day, especially if I can do all the work beforehand in CS2 and just send a PDF. That'd be sweet.

I have one made about 1 year ago. The color is totally off track. The resolution is not good. Finally i just kept the book instead of presenting it to my client :-(

I bet if you photograph the page and email it to them they will sort it, they have been very customer friendly to me via email and IRC (thanks Christian).
It does not sound normal, the print quality should be OK.

The uploading is quirky but has got better, some of it needs clarifying which is why I do it with some IRC help to make sure I get what I want. The pdf preview is useful.

I like the finish on the covers and the small softbacks are very cool - get a couple at the same time, there is no extra work involved and it adds value.

I thought if there were two barbers in a town that you should go to the one with the bad hair cut? :)

My experience with viovio has been very good. I create each page in Photoshop 1 at a time.

I have printed at least 15 or 20 books with viovio. The printed books match very closely prints that I had printed at a photo lab. The inside pages of the book are thicker then most magazine pages. In my opinion they could be a little thicker, but no one has complained.

The color and the sharpness has been very good. What I sent them is what I got back. Viovio print quality compares very nicely to traditional offset presses.

For a wedding photographer creating a coffee table type book, I believe there are better choices. ASUKA is one that comes to mind. They produce a higher end product with more options. Quality does come at a price.

A year ago I had them create a few mini books for my grandmothers 80th birthday party. The quality surpassed my expectations by many miles! I chose them because they could accommodate my need for a smaller book at a very good price. Of course, I expected the quality to be a little blury since I had a lot of typed print in there and I wasn't sure how the conversion from photoshop to pdf would turn out. But the end result was very crisp and clean! On top of that, they were able to get the books printed and shipped in time, even though I didn't upload it in time to allow for printing and shipping (totally my fault!).

Communication really does work when it comes to getting what you pay for. If the owner was kind enough to take the time to address your concerns, by all means take him up on the offer to fix it! What's the worst that could happen?

No, I don't work for the company, either, but I'm a firm believer in getting what I pay for. If you don't think you what you paid for, let it be known. Nobody's perfect and people that know that are usually willing to get as close to it as possible!

Work hard but smart. You get what you give!

Just wanted to say that I just recieved a hardback 10x10 book, bound in black leather. It was for a wedding client and I was very anxious about the quality. I have to say, it's very nice. I'm quite pleased with the color and the quality.

Thought I'd share.
