Hi all,

I have just managed to up load some pictures to pbase, and was wondering if you guy's could give me some feed back!

I'm still quite new to this media so don't be too kind, as if i'm going to learn i might as well jump in the deep end and not get into too many bad habbits. the pictures are all taken since December when i got my first digital camera a Sony 707, but i never felt in kin with it, as i do my E-20. I've had this camera for about a month now and love it, were learning together.

The pictures are from all over the place and i'll add more depending the ribbing i get from you lot.

Regards, James.

Thanks both, It's quite nerve racking posting to this site as the content of pictures posted is very high.

looking forward to having a go at this months challenge (which way is the river quay(sic)

Regards, James

HI Kee,

Burg al Arab is a hotel in Dubai and is the only 7 star hotel in the world! Sadly we were in her sister hotel the jameria beach. On the plus side the pic was taken from our hotel balcony i think we got the better deal!

I'll put some more on pbase at other times of day.
Regards, James

Well you did right well.

Flower - slightly out of focus and 2/3 stop over exposed - however it kind of works the way it is. I guess the main problem, for me, is the gross overexposure past the flower.

Lifeguard - possible move to the right, lower position (but looking up), zoom in to get guard more as main center of interest.

Dubai 095 - kill the glare on water at lower right.

Good set of images.

Hi James
I notice you come from Wiltshire - this is, of course, inexcusable

I also notice that you travel a lot - this is, of course, inexcusable

I also notice that you have recently started photography - this, of course, makes you a suitable victim.

So
here goes:

1. Buddha

Ohmigod - well you've stuck the buddha to the right hand side, looking out of the picture - this unbalances the picture - you'd usually have it pointing inwards. In my opinion it adds a bit of tension, which makes the picture much more interesting. Great - I like it - the lighting is pretty good as well.

2. B'urg al Arab

Is this in Dubai? what a whacky building - and the colours are wonderful (is this the 707 super saturation?). Very dramatic - I like it.

3.My Dream

Nice composition, and you must have been pleased to catch it, but I'm not sure that this one really makes it (IMHO).

4. Infrared Bhudda

Might have been better if you'd got the knees in? but at least you've been exactly consistent. The leaves at the front might have been distracting, but they're a good shape and sharp. Maybe it's slightly unbalanced at the right hand side, but it's pretty good.

5. Flower

This one is really dramatic - great, I love it - you've got the focus right at the point it matters too.

6. Hooked

I love this - the black and white is great - the composition is great - perfect focus point - really good.

7. Post Box

I'm not so sure about this - nice idea, but I'm not sure that the black and white bit quite holds it's own

8. Life Guard

Now - this wasn't taken in Wiltshire :-) I like it - there's something jolly and humerous about it (not sure what).

9. Dubai
Ah - it is dubai :-) not as dramatic as the other one - but still fine

10. Dubai again - club
good one - how did you do this? I think it's pretty good.

There - I've done 'em all!

If you've really only just taken up photography I think you're doing a grand job - they're all fine, but the hooked and the flower are really grand.

No more excuses (for me) I really must do some work!

kind regards

Hi Jono,

Well living in Wiltshire one has to get away now and then. The "club photo" was taken in the Burg al arab, to be precise the restaurant at the top!

As for how i took it, i used a slow shutter speed and only moved it at the last moment. The 707 was querky at the best of times, but i did get some good shots once in a while.

Hi James

Where abouts in Wiltshire are you?

And have you really only taken up photography recently, or have you been doing it with film for years and years?

kind regards

Hi Jono,

I can honestly say that i have only been interested in photography for about 4 or 5 months, i needed a hobbie/passion and found an old Olympus OM-20 i took some rolls of film, some B+w and some colour (5 rolls in total) got them developed and loved it. Being into new technology i sensed digital was the way to go. Like i said i got a 707 but didnt gel with it and went for a E-20, never looked back!

Hope to post more now and also take part int he challenges, i want soo much to learn and can't think of a better place to do it!

Forgot to say,
I'm about 7 miles from Cirencester on the way to Swinedom (Swindon).

Hi James

My wife used to teach Geography in Cirencester, and we have friends in North Cerney (wrong side I guess).

I have to say, you've done really well in 5 months - those hooks . . . .obviously you have the 'eye' for it, which seems to me is the most important thing.

And yes - this is a good place to learn!

We live near Diss (Norfolk Suffolk border) but I'm from StIves in Cornwall, and we still have family (and a house) near Lands end.

kind regards

It looks like the hotel is on an island (the boat) and the hotel is the sail of the boat. Well that's how it appears to me.

I like the rusty hooks shot but though the thirds rule would have them a little higher. The Dream too is nice. Is this why you travel - your dream to be free? The blurry shot is good and its compositon looks about right to me.

But, hey, 'break the rules' and have fun - you decide.--LCD

Yes the hotel is on an island a man made one! The tower is suposed to represent a sail which complements the hotel next to it shaped like a wave, from the right angle the two do marry up quite well.

Ah my dream, I like the idea of swans. The fact they stay together for life, also you hit the nail on the head i like to be free, not in a fancy free notion though, but in the way i present images.

But, hey, 'break the rules' and have fun - you decide.

If i Knew the rules i would try and brake them! LOL.

All great shots. I particularily like the evening B'urg shot - cool building and good compensition. I really like the Hooks - you have to "see" this shot before taking it. Nice job.
