Can anybody tell me how reliable this forum is ?
Can we rely on the integrity of people who post stunning pictures ?

Camera manufacturers do know the importance of forums like these.

They know that forums like these give them a very good opportunity to "sell" their camera. Its just a simple matter of posting some brilliant pictures made by John Smith (who just started making photographs 1 month ago)People see those pics and decide , That's the camera i want !

This forum is spoiled with brilliant pictures posted by the manufacturers themselves...

Robertx, I'm guessing you just finished looking at the pics i posted a little bit ago, huh? hahahahahahahahahaha! Just kidding, don't think they'd ever be mistaken for a professional's. :)

at any rate, I for one take people at their word here. It's a place for people with a love of photography to get information and inspiration, share their work and view others' work. In the end, as long as the pictures are really from the camera they claim (and, again, see no reason not to believe anyone's claims, and in many cases you can often view the picture data, anyway, can't you?), does it truly matter if they happen to work for the camera's manufacturer?

Seeing a stunning picture, knowing it was done with xxx camera, it's still something for owners of said camera to aspire to no matter who took it, no?

Add to that the fact that most people here are smart enough to realize that it is as much the skill and vision of the person taking the picture as the camera itself that produces the final output. I doubt anyone expects they will buy xx camera and immediately start producing stunning pictures BECAUSE it's that camera...

just my $0.02...

Rich

You make some pretty strong staements here, robertx. Can you provide us with some proof that manufacturers post the "brilliant" pictures on this forum. I, and those who post "brilliant" pictures, have been members of this forum for many, many years. We have varying degees of talent, but I don't believe any of us work for Panasonic. You have only been here about one month. I think that you should retract your unwarranted statement and go back to whatever forum you feel comfortable in, one that isn't controlled by a camera manufacturer.

All the brilliant shots I post are taken with a 2 mp Motorola cell phone camera. It has 3x digital zoom which gives me plenty of reach for bird photography. I knew I couldn't fool you people for ever.

You must work for both companies.

No seriously, how does a Nikon lens fit to the Panasonic? Is it with some sort of adapter?
I don't know about any other photographs posted here. I know that
mine are photographs I made with the cameras and lenses I say I
did. :-)

Greetings,

You have just posted a subject that is near and dear to my heart. I do not know of any manufacturer photos posted here.

I do check the EXIF of every picture on this forum - have been doing that from the beginning. The absence of EXIF is a red flag to me. I came on line several months (maybe years now) about a fellow that i strongly suspected was posting an other cameras pictures on this Panasonic forum. I have questioned folks on this forum that have posted another cameras photos with out attribution to the source. That means noting the camera that took the picture. I have noted folks that edit the EXIF data quite extensively.

Anyone doubts what I say is true - please read some of my posts on this forum, I do get rather acerbic at times. I apologize for that - as I usually mellow out after a few days.

The question in mind is why do folks post photos from other (different than Panasonic) on this forum? One reason, I think is some folks have a weird sense of humor. I remember one fellow that had posted some great pictures on this forum without EXIF data. I could follow to the source of these photos - and lo and behold - they (the photos) were made by a Canon DSLR. I assume this fellow got a great chuckle out of the raves on the "great Panasonic" photos - when the photos really came from a Canon.

If anyone that reads my posts can not figure it out - The Canon AE-1 is my "Gold Standard" When any manufacturer can make a digital camera that equals a Canon AE-1 - then I will be happy. This is my Holy Grail.

I buy Panasonic cameras because logic would have the great electronics manufacturer (Panasonic) coupled (mated) with a great lens manufacturer (Leica) would produce a digital camera without equal. Why Panasonic fails to do so is one of the great mysteries of the universe.

Question: What leads you think (believe) that other camera manufacturers are posting pictures on this forum? Of the pictures I have seen from around 15 digital camera manufacturers - I can show (give) ten examples of individuals taking and presenting equal or better photos. Not all the folks on this forum, but taking the various forums in Toto from many different sites. I know - I need to get a life.

Reliability of this forum - I would speculate above 95 percent. Normally the folks showing aberrant behaviour are purged from this forum. That they will do - drop you like a hot potato - if need be.

Just ignore the ad hominem responses - and keep on keeping on.

Cheers, Ray

Well as for no EXIF data, sometimes well actually almost always Photoshop seems to strip my EXIF data. So if anyone can tell me what setting to make to sort that out I would appreciate it as I certainly would prefer to retain it. Or perhaps Neat Image is buggering it up?

Needless to say, I am sure there is no mistaking my shots for something from Panasonic. Not one Japanese girl giving the peace sign amongst them. ;-)

Sometimes I don't think the manufacturers would know a good picture if they saw one. most of the pictures on their sample sites aren't as good as what are posted her by us so called amateurs.

Panasonic posts images on thier website for various cameras, if you check those out, there's nothing extraordinary about them, actually most of them show the same negative qualities that you would get in the real world (excessive NR and such).

If they were going to doctor images, or something, you'd think they'd start with thier promotional material!

I've been on these boards long enough to recognise a lot of the posters of great images, many of them have learned with me by posting questions, and posting thier improved techniques.

If a camera is able to take great pictures under the careful control of a great photographer, what's the problem? Even if it was a secret panasonic rep posting them (doubt it), if it was taken with the camera, who cares? :)

If it wasn't taken with the camera mentioned, then that would be pretty low, and a lot of trouble to go through (strippin exif, etc..) Besides image touch up, I can't think of much a manufacturer "could" do... what point and shot camera at 10MP is that much better than the FZ50? So are they going to take a DSLR image and post it as an FZ50 image? Wouldn't the depth of field/exif/resolution/etc.. give it away as not a small sensor image?

oh I don't know... I guess I figure always looking for the "consipiracy" can take away from the joys of life.

Oh, and if the pany reps are the ones posting the great images, I have to thank them, the advice/tips that they give me/us to make our pictures better, has been really really helpful!

I believe "save for web" in photoshop strips it.

So does Smugmug and other web sharing websites (except for the "origionals" of course). Annoying it is.
think it's mostly noise software that strips out the exif data Jim

Note to Panny - I can be bought.

Just send me a custom made Ikelite housing for my L1 and and some strobe lighting. I'll provide the diving gear. I'll post the pictures I take complete with dummied up EXIF data. And swear to everyone they came from my FX01.

Heck, I'll shoot them in RAW format. But, to do that Panny had better toss in a couple of those 4gig SDHC cards. Oh, how about a couple of spare batteries?

That should really spike the sale of Panasonic underwater housings.

Yes, of course
Camera manufacturers do know the importance of forums like these.
Doubt it, don't think they care that much, less than 1% of buyers consult this or other forums

I am not using that save feature though. I think it is Neat Image, although the literature says it retains all EXIF data intact.

If I post the size in this forum that I uploaded to the album the exif will be included like this photo

but If I post a different size the exif will not be included

In my case it has nothing to do with NR as I do not use any.

I use a Nikon-> 4/3 mount adapter purchased from fotodiox.com with Nikon 20/2.8AF-D and Nikkor 105/2.5AI lenses. The lenses operate as a "dumb" lens, all manual aperture and focus operation, but otherwise work very well. They're excellent lenses!

All those beautiful photos you've been posting were put up by Panasonic! That Shag you displayed a few months ago is a stuffed bird mounted in the lobby of Matsushita's main HQ? Boy, that explains a LOT! ;-)

But frankly, I agree with you; it would be interesting to see which of our photos the OP thinks are put up by Panasonic, wouldn't it? Considering the insultory tone he used in his query, I'm not sure I'd go along with his taste anyway, so to be "chosen" or not "chosen" in such a "competition" would engender mixed feelings, at least?
